Lucien does a little bit of trolling with poor Kara~

-x-X-x-

"… I'm going to promote her to my personal assistant, of course."

Needless to say, that goes over like a lead balloon with both of his heads of security.

"You're going to what?!"

"Are you insane?!"

Chuckling, Lucien leans back in his chair, lacing his fingers together behind his head.

"Well, it's just like they always say right? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Mercy and Blackfire share a long-suffering look at that, clearly building a bond in the shared suffering of having to put up with Lucien's bullshit. Finally, Mercy looks him dead in the eye.

"That's not… surely you can see what a risk that is, right? Making Supergirl your secretary is a disaster just waiting to happen."

Lucien hums.

"I don't see how. We're not doing anything illegal… anymore. She's not going to find any dirt on me or our new President if she's fetching me coffee and helping me manage my schedule. Noting in my day to day is actionable intelligence for her goals."

Mercy opens her mouth to respond to that, only to close it and frown in consternation. Blackfire is also looking a bit more contemplative.

"We've already let her into LexCorp as is. She's going to be snooping around no matter what, isn't she? So our choices are therefore to either stonewall and sideline her as much as possible in the hopes that she gets frustrated to the point of leaving but not to the point of aggression… or to give her some of what she wants knowing that she'll never find what she actually desires."

Shrugging, Lucien smirks.

"What do you think is better? Having her right under my nose where we can keep a close eye on her while piling her down with all the work that comes from being a CEO's personal assistant? Or leaving her to languish in the secretarial pool where she'll probably have just enough free time to be snooping around all over the place?"

Grimacing like she's bitten into something sour, Mercy finally scowls.

"… Fine. You MIGHT have a point. But do you really think she'll buy it if you just promote her to your personal secretary out of nowhere? She's going to know that we're onto her at that point just as surely as she'd eventually realize something is up if we stonewalled and sidelined her."

Lucien rolls his eyes.

"Obviously. We'll make her work for it. Someone like Supergirl is an overachiever, to say the least. She's going to put her all into this job in the hopes of achieving greater access. I'm thinking in about a month we'll be in a position where we can justify the promotion."

Here, Lucien grins.

"Truth be told, I doubt she actually wants to be promoted to my personal assistant for the purposes of her little undercover mission, but when she constantly overdelivers and reveals herself to be quite the competent little go-getter, then she'll come to feel that it was inevitable. And she won't be able to bring herself to refuse either. From there… we can use her how we need to in whatever way suits us best."

Blackfire finally interjects, chuckling darkly.

"Devious as ever, boss. Girl Scout won't know what hit her."

Yes, well… that was the plan.

-x-X-x-

Fuck. She'd brought this on herself, hadn't she? Kara was, as they liked to say, suffering from her own success. This definitely wasn't part of the plan, and yet here they were all the same.

Kara keeps her true feelings locked away, even as she's escorted up to the very top of LexCorp Tower, a bright sunny smile spread across her face instead. Maybe there's a hint of trepidation and nervousness there, but then of course there would be, all things considered.

It had been a month since she'd started working for LexCorp as Kara Danvers. It wasn't just an undercover mission, it was her secret identity's literal job, so she couldn't exactly slack off or anything. There'd been one or two close calls when Supergirl was needed to save the day and she'd had to make excuses, but so far the 'bathroom' excuse was holding.

… Maybe she could have stood to be a little less perfect though. Even with her infrequent need to visit the 'bathroom' for lengthy periods of time, Kara had shown an impeccable work ethic. She'd finished every single task given to her with competence and efficiency, not allowing anything to languish. Her mistakes, what few there were, had been negligible at the end of the day.

She'd quickly developed something of a reputation around the tower as the secretary who got things done. Within a week or two, she was getting requested specifically by certain people, and by the end of week two she was hearing about them fighting over her and who got to command her attention going forward.

The last two weeks of this first month, Kara would have been run ragged if she were a normal human being. She would have probably burnt out if she didn't have her Kryptonian energy levels to surreptitiously lean on. Between all of the higher ups fighting over her and the growing expectations, Kara had truly been thrown in the deep end.

If she had thought about it a little longer, she probably wouldn't have done such a good job, truth be told. She'd told herself she wanted to be the best damn secretary LexCorp had ever seen… and she'd inadvertently done exactly that, to the point where just about everyone wanted a piece of her.

Needless to say, hindsight was twenty-twenty. Kara should have definitely made a few more mistakes here and there. If she could go back and repeat this last month, she wouldn't have been nearly as good at her job. Because when everyone wanted a piece of you, not only did you get no time to yourself… but you also got the attention of the big man himself.

Kara's plans for infiltrating LexCorp and finding dirt on Lucien Luthor or Alexander Luthor had not actually involved directly interfacing with the new LexCorp CEO at any point. Sure, she'd gone out of her way to really change things up and she was confident that Kara was extremely different from 'Karen' in every way, but that didn't mean she wanted to come face to face with one of the people who had seen her in that flimsy cover. And yet…

"Here we are. Go in, be professional, introduce yourself, and then once he dismisses you, get to work."

The same no-nonsense, disapproving woman who had escorted her to the secretarial pool on Kara's first day has also escorted her up here today to her new job… as Lucien Luthor's personal secretary.

At least the woman doesn't look as disapproving anymore. Kara has proven herself over the last month and despite her terse words, her tone is actually ever so slightly warm.

"Mister Luthor is a very busy man, so don't be surprised if your exchange is short, alright? Just get in and get out. Then… be prepared to work."

Unable to help herself at least a little, Kara chuckles.

"I think I've more than proven I'm prepared to work since starting here."

The other woman snorts derisively at that.

"I'm sure you do. And the executives have certainly been running you ragged. However, don't let all of that go to your head. You're young enough that you might have bought into all of that shit on the internet about CEOs being overpaid and underworked. You'll quickly be disabused of such notions as you work under Mister Luthor."

With those apparently final ominous words of wisdom delivered, the other woman turns on her heel and walks away, leaving Kara standing outside of Lucien Luthor's office feeling a little pale. But then to be fair, she's worried about way more than just the workload. This meeting has the potential to be disastrous for her… and all because of something as simple as a handshake.

Yes, the common form of greeting between people in business everywhere. The simple handshake. It was the last thing that Kara could possibly allow to happen between her and Lucien because… well, she knew that if she did, the game would be up and he would immediately know exactly what and therefore who she was.

Ever since finding out that she was being assigned to Lucien as his personal secretary, Kara had been wracking her brain trying to figure out a solution to that very big problem. But even now, she didn't have anything. If she'd thought about it more, she would have worn gloves from day one and claimed she had scars or something under them… but as previously mentioned, she was never supposed to actually come face to face with Lucien.

In the end, she truly was suffering from success… and if he did go for a handshake, she would just have to react in the moment. Letting out an explosive sigh, Kara smooths out her skirt and walks forward, pushing open the door of Lucien Luthor's office and stepping inside.

The man is alone at his desk, eyes glued to his computer as he types away at something. He seems busy, Kara finds herself noting, even as she quietly walks up to the other side of the desk and waits silently.

Finally, after another minute or two, he acknowledges her without looking up.

"You must be… Kara Danvers."

His eyes are still glued on his computer. Could it be? Had she really gotten so lucky?

"Y-Yes sir! That's me… I've been told I'm reassigned effectively immediately to be your personal assistant, sir."

Still not looking at her a single time, Lucien simply nods.

"I've heard great things about you so far, Ms. Danvers. I expect you to keep your impeccable work ethic going under me. Can I count on you to be able to do so?"

Straightening up, Kara nods rapidly even though he's not looking.

"Yes sir, you most definitely can!"

"Very good then. Dismissed."

Kara's eyes widen slightly. R-Really? She'd… really gotten away with it? Unable to believe her luck, she stands there for a moment stupefied... and then finally realizes she's probably only a few seconds away from him getting annoyed with her and that might mean he'd look up from his monitor and actually take her in.

She knew this couldn't last forever, but as she scurries out of Lucien's office, the undercover Kryptonian can't help but be extremely relieved. She'd avoided a handshake for now. Fuck, she'd avoided even making eye contact with him! This was perfect. This was-

Kara's thoughts come to a screeching halt as she sits down at her desk outside of Lucien's office and boots up her computer to see exactly what's expected of her. As she finds herself scrolling… and scrolling through the daily task list, a whimper leaves her lips.

This… this was insane! This was more work under one man than she'd had working under several at a time this past month. Kara understood what the other woman had meant now when she'd said she would be quickly disabused of any notions of being underworked.

Still, what else could she do? Her only options were to either quit or knuckle down and get to work. And even after a month of snooping, she hadn't found a single ounce of actionable information. So quitting was right out.

Keeping her grumbling internalized, Kara begins to work her way through the checklist, one task at a time.

-x-X-x-

Lucien smiles as he hears Kara's nearly silent whimper from inside of his office. Really, it was her own fault at the end of the day. If she didn't want to be promoted, then she shouldn't have blown her peers out of the water. He'd always intended to promote her in a month, but honestly he'd briefly wondered if he needed to promote her even earlier, because the past few weeks had not been very productive for LexCorp, mostly on account of all of the infighting.

Every single executive wanted Kara for themselves by the end of her second week employed at LexCorp. Every damn businessman and businesswoman who got a taste of her impeccable work ethic and incredible competence wanted her for themselves.

At least it made it all the more organic seeming when Lucien finally put his foot down and took her for himself. He'd had a dozen request forms on his desk, every single one of them asking for Kara to be assigned to them permanently. If he'd chosen any one of them, he'd have made all of the others angry at him.

But by claiming the new star of the secretarial pool for himself, Lucien had effectively defused that particular bomb. Oh sure, everyone was still a little upset at their young boss for deciding to steal Kara out from under all of them, but they weren't nearly as upset as they would have been if he'd played favorites and picked one out of all of them to get her for good.

Meanwhile, poor Kara had definitely been sweating during their interaction just now. She'd been so nervous that he would offer his hand to her and then so relieved that he hadn't… that she didn't even realize the whole thing was an act.

Sure, he could have blown her cover in an instant, or at least lit a damn fire under her ass, just by doing the polite and normal thing and offering her a handshake and eye contact. But that didn't exactly fit with his plans. If he exposed her too early, then who knew what she would try next? It was the same exact reason that he'd let her into LexCorp in the first place. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Besides, they had nothing to hide… mostly.

Admittedly, tonight was a bit of a different story. Things had just lined up that way, but it was rather serendipitous because Kara would be run far too ragged tonight to bother stalking him as he, Mercy, and Blackfire all went and raided the secret laboratory that the ladies had finally uncovered.

Technically he didn't need to tag along, but he wanted to anyways. He had to be a part of cleaning up the last remnants of his true father's obsessions. It felt… right.

Meanwhile, Kara was going to be busy all day long with her tasks as his new secretary. And she'd soon come to regret being such an overachiever, heh.
