Chapter 53 - 53 Second Mission (8)
Chapter 53: Chapter 53 Second Mission (8)
The captain had no idea how Ye Nai found her way. As soon as he heard voices, she had found the people.
They changed locations, finding a concealed spot amidst some bushes.
“Captain?!”
Those two warriors had also heard unusual noises in the bushes and were on alert, guns at the ready. Seeing Ye Nai carrying the captain, both were stunned and quickly stepped forward to help, laying the captain on the ground.
Next to him was the severely injured warrior, who was still unconscious.
“How did it go? Did you get through?” the captain asked as soon as they landed.
...
“We got through, and they’re on their way.”
As they were speaking, the radio crackled to life with someone on the other side calling in, reporting the current route of the reinforcements and how far they were from them.
The signal operator, while responding, moved the radio closer to the captain, letting him take over the conversation.
“Ye Nai.” The captain held the transceiver, thought for a moment, and then called out to Ye Nai again.
“Eh?”
“I just want to confirm, those three Gold Element were drained into mummies, and out of our entire team of fifty-one, we lost eight, and the others are seriously injured, right?”
“Right.”
The captain, after identifying himself, reported the latest situation to the other side.
The signal operator stayed by the radio to ensure communication remained smooth while another warrior pulled Ye Nai aside to whisper.
“Did you find everyone?”
“Yes, everyone’s accounted for. Eight are dead, and from the look of the wounds, they didn’t suffer. Everyone else is seriously injured, and all wounds that could be bandaged have been wrapped with hemostatic bandages.”
“That’s good, but it’s not good for you. You’ve had no training. Seeing something like this suddenly could cause nightmares. Remember to schedule some psychological intervention on your phone—if you can’t sleep or if you have nightmares, those are the least of your concerns.”
“Okay.”
Although Ye Nai felt she didn’t need it, she decided to give it a try out of courtesy for the gesture. If there were any issues, she would address them; if not, she would be even more bold in her actions.
After the captain finished the call, he clutched the transceiver and watched Ye Nai and the warrior beside her, as if he wanted to say more but hesitated.
Ye Nai, sensitive to people’s gazes, looked up and met the captain’s eyes.
“Does the captain want us to move the other injured over here?”
“That was my thought, but it’s exhausting, and…”
“We can go check on them. It’s also a good time to loosen their hemostatic bandages a bit, and we can move those who are able to walk.”
Ye Nai didn’t mind exerting herself; the Fungus continuously fed her energy, so carrying people wouldn’t tire her out.
Besides, the mission paid quite well. She was willing to work harder, gather the people together, and thus clean up the battlefield faster when the reinforcements arrived.
“Right, the threat of mutant plants is still present. If there are any young tendrils we didn’t see sneaking around sucking blood, that would be bad.” The other warrior also agreed that they should move the people quickly.
“Okay, you two be careful, go quickly and come back quickly.”
No sooner had the captain finished speaking than several severed tendrils in mid-air suddenly twitched violently like they were electrified, then fell to the ground with a whoosh.
All four fully conscious people present saw this happen.
“Huh? Are they giving up?”
“Should we go check?”
“Forget it, it seems a bit far. Rather than worrying about that, I’m more concerned it might sneak around and suck blood.”
“Right, let’s find the people first.”
Ye Nai decided to give up on checking the situation with the tendrils; her own people were more important.
Others might not know, but she was clear, the mutant plants had died. Under abundant energy, the Fungal Mycelium released a massive amount of spores that dissipated itself, and these spores settled in the surrounding soil to grow and reproduce.
Besides energy, this mutant plant had no Heart Core.
Ye Nai felt somewhat shortchanged; after such a long fight, this was all she gained.
Comparing the two, hunting mutant beasts was more cost-effective; at least it didn’t take time. No matter how many there were, as long as they breathed through lungs, they were instantly killed.
With Ye Nai leading the way, the two found the first warrior. The man was unconscious. They loosened his hemostatic bandage, retied it, and then, with the warrior leading, Ye Nai hurried back carrying the man to the squadron leader.
This was how they repeatedly transported them.
Since there were more unconscious than conscious people, they moved the unconscious first. Those who were conscious and could still move slightly crawled to places with bushes or small trees for cover, driven by sheer willpower.
No matter how they moved, Ye Nai found each one precisely; the fungus navigation was too useful to ignore.
She even thought that, in due time, with her fungus spread across the Secret Realm, would those enemies and mutant plants and beasts have any way to survive? Weren’t they all her prey?
Just thinking about it felt exhilarating, which made her even more eager to scatter the spores.
After transporting about a dozen people, the sound of an airplane suddenly came from the sky. Crouching in the bushes, Ye Nai and her companion looked up as the other warrior cheered.
“It’s our helicopter, reinforcements have arrived.”
“Are you sure it’s ours? Not the enemy in disguise?”
“Well, the color and model look right, and the tail is even painted with the Air Force flag.”
“There’s no chance the enemy has hijacked our aircraft?”
“You’re thinking too much…”
“Let’s wait. Let them come to us before rushing out. Otherwise, if it really is the enemy in disguise, wouldn’t we be trapping ourselves?”
“…”
The other warrior was left speechless by Ye Nai, but still, they didn’t rush out, especially since they were with an unconscious, severely injured man.
Ye Nai picked up the injured man and started running.
“Go, go, go, let’s find the next injured person. There seems to be another fallen warrior nearby. Which one should we look for?”
“…Let’s look for the injured first, make sure everyone’s in a safe place and then go check.”
“Right, this way.”
Leading the way ahead, Ye Nai ran about two hundred meters and found an injured person smoking in the bushes.
This person’s limbs were gruesomely wounded, with only his left hand still capable of minor movements like smoking. Originally unconscious, the man woke up from the pain when Ye Nai was applying the hemostatic bandage.
“Ouch, you’re awake, huh? Feeling a bit better than before?”
Ye Nai came over and set the man down.
“Having a smoke helps a lot. What’s the situation? Who’s dead or alive?” The man, holding a cigarette, tried to sit up, but struggled for a bit and couldn’t manage it.
“Alive, borrowing your spot for a bit. There’s another fallen over there.”
“…Can you bring them over? I saw the helicopter just now. The reinforcements have arrived, right?”
“Hopefully, but we two don’t dare to jump out. What if it’s not them? If we lose the squadron leader, we still need to keep some able forces; we can’t let the enemy capture us all, right?”
“…That’s true.” The man took a drag of his cigarette, then suddenly looked up, “Is the squadron leader here?”
“Yes, both his legs are broken, he’s with the communications soldier.”
“Oh, then the helicopter will definitely look for him first.”
“Exactly, if anything happens, he’ll be the first to go, not the two of us who are unscathed.”
What do you think?
