Chapter 58: Chapter 58 Rest is All Kinds of Training
“Okay, it’s all set up. The appointment is at 1:30 this afternoon. Do you know where the hospital is? It’s in the psychology department, right next to the psychiatric department. If the psychologist can’t deal with you, then you’ll need to see a psychiatrist and start taking medication. The side effects vary from person to person; some Awakeners have ruined their spiritual power by taking medication, losing control over their superpowers, and end up being hospitalized.”
Captain Xiao Ni, who never reveals his last name, acted quickly as usual and took care of the booking details. Last time Ye Nai wanted to rent a house, he was the one who provided the broker’s contact.
“Alright, thanks. I’ll be there this afternoon.”
Everything was arranged for her; left with no room to refuse, Ye Nai simply agreed.
Just as she was about to put away her phone, a system notification popped up, showing a new message in the Awakener app.
She checked and found a 50,000 bonus credited to her account, thanking her for her brave performance in dangerous zone No. 7.
...
Ye Nai chuckled; it wasn’t the extra money that pleaseer her but the acknowledgment of her efforts.
Having had an early lunch, she took a nap to refresh herself before heading out to see the doctor.
It was another enjoyable hour-long conversation. The psychologist agreed that Ye Nai’s mental state was stable and that the initial psychological intervention had been timely. However, it was best to wait a few more weeks before entering the Secret Realm again.
Of course, both knew that recommendation was easier said than done—it was merely a suggestion. East Ridge City’s seven dangerous zones required her assistance for missions.
During their friendly chat, Ye Nai discussed the necessity of learning emergency first aid, a lesson learned from her recent experience. Although she had purchased medical supplies, she only knew how to apply a hemostatic bandage and was clueless about treating wounds. If not for her Fungus surprising everyone, some severely injured warriors might not have survived.
The psychologist fully supported her decision to learn. Wanting to learn was excellent; she didn’t need to aim for a medical degree. Attaining a first aid certification through a short training would suffice, enabling her to handle emergencies in the Secret Realm more effectively.
Such emergency training was available at the training gym, focusing primarily on battlefield first aid. Additional training included taking care of patients—observations, administering injections, setting up IVs, and measuring blood pressure—all essential skills to handle everyday injuries as well.
This training was primarily aimed at private military squads—not every team could afford to hire medically trained staff, and it was improbable that every injured person could be near a town’s hospital. What good is a professional doctor in the middle of nowhere?
Hence, most relied on those trained in these short courses to get by until they could reach a hospital.
After leaving the hospital, Ye Nai visited the training gym to check out the first aid classes. Offering courses here was an excellent utilization of resources, as those engaged in daily combat training often suffered injuries, making them perfect practical models for the first aid trainees.
However, the six-month course didn’t include advanced practices such as setting bones or acupuncture; those were advanced courses.
And these classes weren’t available all the time; she had to wait for a new session to begin. The upcoming available course was next week. If she missed some classes due to missions, she could join another class with the same level of progress.
In short, once she paid the tuition, it was non-refundable. She could join the classes whenever they were available.
Having paid over ten thousand for the course, Ye Nai signed up and left, stopping by a hardware store on her way home to pick up a few metal pipes and scythes with the right feel and weight. The scythes, actually called scythes, were recommended by the store owner along with a blacksmith’s card—the blade was shaped on an anvil, and if it became blunt, it could be sharpened the same way.
The store sold them unsharpened, forcing Ye Nai to seek out the blacksmith in the hot afternoon sun. Once her tools were ready, she noticed it was time for Brother Peng’s stall to open. She rode her electric scooter over and bought four charcoal-grilled pig’s feet to enjoy at home.
A bite of meat, a sip of wine—now, this was the perfect summer day.
After taking a day off, Ye Nai resumed her regular schedule the following day.
First, contact Sister Qiao and ask if anyone has cleaned up that garbage.
It’s only August, still hot, and there are pitifully few people working. Aside from the Awakeners, who can endure and continue their jobs, ordinary people really can’t manage the work. They could suffer heatstroke just sitting at home with a fan, let alone wearing protective gear to work, which indeed knocks them down one by one.
Thus, the piles of garbage amassed by the Awakeners emit a foul odor in the heat, and the workers must wear gas masks. They, of course, also suffer from the intense heat, surviving solely on labor protection cooling products.
Sister Qiao was so moved by Ye Nai’s message that she immediately asked her to help out.
Ye Nai cleaned up the accumulated garbage in one morning, which was so foul-smelling she almost fainted. When she got home, she took a thorough shower twice and shaved off her eye-covering hair with an electric razor, only then feeling rid of the stench.
Since she did it herself, the original slight mess obviously disappeared, being flattened into a three-centimeter buzz cut.
Much cooler now.
In the afternoon, she went to the training ground for daily training.
She took one session of mixed martial arts and Short Stick Skill each day; otherwise, taking two classes in succession was a bit too much. By alternating, she had a night’s buffer to recover.
Fungus can both kill and save lives; this has been proven. It can help severly injured warriors stop bleeding in time, and of course, it can also clear out the bruises caused by her falls and fights.
Such performance in the eyes of the combat coaches meant that Ye Nai had an excellent body for resisting blows. She looked like she had taken a bad fall yesterday, but today she seemed all right and ready for more.
The coaches were delighted and spared no mercy.
She also went to the shooting range every day. After five days of practice, her pistol shooting had slightly improved, stabilizing at the eighth ring, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t advance further. However, considering her real combat performance with the grenade gun against the Bloodthirsty Vine—hitting her target every time—the difference was substantial.
The shooting coach, seeing her distracted while practicing, thought she was tired and asked her to rest. Shooting while distracted meant wasting bullets.
“What are you thinking about? Has your passion for guns waned after returning from a mission?”
“No, I encountered something strange.”
“What strange thing? If it’s not classified, can you share?”
“I encountered a Bloodthirsty Vine on this mission.”
“Whoa!” the coach leaned in closer, “Then what happened? You came back safely, so there must be no harm, right?”
“Out of almost fifty people, only three including myself came back unscathed.”
“Well, that’s what happens with Bloodthirsty Vine. You coming back unscathed is quite fortunate.”
“That’s the strange part. My pistol shooting is just at this level, right?”
“Ah? Did you achieve a good result with another gun?”
What do you think?
