Chapter 922: Barren
Almost two years and nine months had passed since Jayden's death; life continued, but nothing was the same. There was no longer anything exciting or joyous.
What seemed to be peace was nothing more than a melancholic environment. Jayden's entire family had cut off their connection with the world, and they just stayed inside their house.
Xerome's girlfriend, Karen, became his wife after being turned into a vampire by him. She, too, moved in with him, and although she hadn't spent any time with Jayden, she could feel the depression in the air.
At that moment, all of them were sitting outside the house, on their lawn, but they barely conversed among themselves, staring into the empty sky absentmindedly.
Alice sat among the others; her belly had grown, clearly visible over her clothes. Her beautiful face was emotionless— despite the passage of three years, the pain and sorrow hadn't diminished even a little bit.
Just a thought of Jayden made everything else seem pointless; living for eternity seemed like a haunted dream. For now, all of them focused on Alice and taking care of her.
To Alice's side sat Emma. She had grown quite a bit in the past three years— turning fourteen years old and would be fifteen soon— and she looked just as sad as the others, living in the memories she spent with her brother.
The three assassins remained hidden in the shadows. They, too, grieved their master's death and had taken on the task of protecting their family.
The silence was broken as all of them noticed something: there were a lot of presences right outside the universe, and the auras were strong enough that most people began to notice it.
Alice wrapped her arms around herself, wondering if this was going to be the end; a part of her was sad since she and Jayden's baby might not even have the chance to come into this world, while the other part felt a little relieved that this suffering would finally come to an end.
"What's going on? Are those the same people that—d-darling—protected us from?" Sasha mumbled, her low voice perfectly audible in the silence.
"It seems more people had come from the other universe, much stronger than before. The entire army of our universe is no match for them," Hecate spoke, her tone void of any emotion.
"..." All of them stood up and stared into the sky, looking at Alice—a worry filled them, for her survival was the most important among them.
"I told you, bringing me along was the best choice you made in your life; otherwise, you would be running around searching for the nameless universe.
They have hidden it so perfectly that you would either end up wasting a lot of time before you locate it or you might have gone back empty-handed," Zendax spoke, his voice filled with mocking pride.
"Yeah, yeah, but I still miss that doll form of yours." The second general looked irritated as he replied.
After travelling for around three months, everyone had almost arrived at the nameless universe; just a couple more days and they would reach the boundary of that universe.
All of a sudden, the second general halted as he stared at the space in front of him in confusion and curiosity; then he looked back and asked:
"What happened to this space? It seems like it had been sucked dry. We are around a couple hundred thousand miles away from that nameless universe—was it always like that or is it some kind of disaster?"
"It wasn't like that when I left; the energy wasn't very thick, but now it appears like a desert without a drop of water," Zendax spoke. He, too, seemed just as surprised.
"Let's continue forward; I just hope some other universe hasn't made its move before us." Saying that, the second general flew forward at full speed, his large army following behind him.
"Something seems wrong—could it be those time wraiths? I doubt they have found this universe, or that they would even be interested in such a small universe," Zendax thought and followed.
As they approached the nameless universe, they noticed that no matter how far they flew, the space appeared the same—dried up and with a complete lack of any kind of energy.
Soon, all of them arrived at the boundary of the nameless universe; their expressions turned even more solemn as they observed it.
At first, seeing it through the protective barrier was a little difficult, but with Zendax's help, they located it without much difficulty and found its state quite strange.
"Are you sure this was the universe you told us about? You said there was such a strong person here who had almost reached the 2-star level. Is life even possible in such a barren universe? There is barely any energy, and everything looks so dried out. Did you lie to us all just to save yourself? If that's the case, then you are in even bigger trouble," the second general said as he turned his gaze from the universe to Zendax, who appeared flabbergasted.
"I—I don't know how this place has changed so much in less than three years; could it be because of the absence of the guardians? But even so, the condition shouldn't be so bad. I didn't lie at all; the condition of this universe wasn't so bad before," Zendax spoke as sweat poured down his body, his mind struggling to comprehend the reason behind such drastic changes.
"Whatever, my task is to bring this universe back to the emperor; it's your problem that the information you provided is completely wrong. Sigh—it was a waste to bring the army along. With the universe in such a state, it wouldn't be hard to bring them back." After glaring at Zendax for a few seconds, the second general focused his gaze on the universe.
Then he raised both his arms on either side of his body, releasing an astronomical amount of energy that began to form another barrier around the already existing one.
Even if all the beings from this universe tried to fight, they wouldn't be a match for the second general alone, and everything happened so fast that none of them even had time to register the changes.
Within a few hours, a strong barrier had formed around the nameless universe, sealing all their fate; then the second general revealed a marble-like pearl that floated above his palm.
He pushed it forward as the entire universe began to sink, soon pulled toward the pearl; within a short time, the whole universe was stored away inside the pearl, leaving a large, empty, and dried space.
"Sigh, such an easy task. If you had given the correct info, then we would already be done with this. Just wait till we return back to our Topaz universe—maybe the emperor would once again turn you into a doll." The second general laughed as he gestured toward his army to move back.
"..." Zendax could only grit his teeth in frustration; he just hoped that the emperor would believe him otherwise his life would be extremely miserable once he returns.
