Book 6: Chapter 1: A Million Years
“Previous life…? This lifetime…?” Luna murmured in disbelief.
Up to this moment, she had been a staunch believer in the present-life theory and had never entertained the idea of reincarnation. The notion seemed absurd to her. But for some reason, after hearing those words come from this woman named Ciel Hesse, they seemed… far too real.
“I know you won’t believe it because I didn’t believe it either when I first learned the truth,” Ciel said as she walked forward, gently tracing the silhouette on the display.
“How could that lovely, mischievous, short-tempered Lilith in my heart—the dazzling Lilith I adore the most and loves girls—have been a dirty, filthy man in her previous life? And a beggar, at that? She’s the honorable princess of dragons!”
“It took me a long time to come to terms with this… this hideous truth. I felt like Lilith was no longer the pure maiden I thought she was. At that time, I even had a falling out with her because of it.”
“It wasn’t until… that day, when Lilith died in my arms, that I understood. Her previous life, her identity… none of that really mattered. The person I love was Lilith, the blonde girl, and that is all that matters.”
“What are you… talking about?”
Lilith is dead? No… isn’t she still alive, competing in the tournament? Lilith is still alive!
Luna wanted to retort, to call this crazy-looking woman’s words nonsense, to label her a liar. But when the woman turned to face her, the words died on Luna’s tongue.
The woman was crying. Tears streamed down her cheeks. She seemed so heartbroken, as if she had lost the entire world.“At that time, I was filled with regret. I kept asking myself why I abandoned Lilith. If I hadn’t abandoned her, would the outcome have been different? I hated myself for it. I even thought of taking my own life.”
“Time passed… I don’t even know how many years, but in that time, my strength rose to the peak of humanity, just one step away from reaching that legendary realm. I knew I couldn’t enter that realm. Lilith’s death had always been an unconquerable demon in my heart.”
“But still, I pressed on, because I thought that if I succeeded, maybe I could find a way to bring Lilith back in that ethereal realm. And if I failed… then I would finally be able to join her.”
“I did fail, but the heavens played a cruel joke on me. I didn’t die from the backlash. Instead, I was saved by a young girl after I suffered grave injuries and lost all my powers.”
As Ciel Hesse spoke, her palm gently swept over the face of the young girl in the display, tenderly, as if she were caressing the most precious treasure in the world.
She then moved to the second display, which showed a girl with a very different expression from the first. Yet, no matter what angle Luna looked at it from, she was sure that both of them were Lilith.
“That girl… is Lilith.”
“What…?” Luna blurted out in surprise, but this time, she didn’t interrupt. Instead, she remained silent, seemingly captivated by the absurdity of the story.
“Hehe, can you imagine? Lilith, whom I thought was dead, suddenly appeared alive before my eyes. At first, I thought it was a dream. I even wondered if I had already entered hell and this was how I was being reunited with her. But it wasn’t. Lilith was alive—truly alive. Do you know how happy I was in that moment?” Ciel asked.
“But… Lilith doesn’t remember me anymore,” her voice faltered, her sorrow unmistakable.
Luna felt a lump in her throat, her heart aching as she absorbed the pain in Ciel’s words.
“She doesn’t remember me anymore and treated me like a stranger. She had forgotten everything we had gone through together. I once doubted she was even Lilith. I thought someone was impersonating her. But that wasn’t the case. She was the real Lilith, I even verified that she had a mole below her left breast.”
Ciel let out a bitter laugh, her eyes brimming with tears. “Because I did that, she tried to kill me for quite a while.”
However, the nostalgic smile on her face faded quickly.
“Even though Lilith didn’t remember me, I was still happy, because as long as she was alive, that was enough. After everything I’d lost, my wishes had become so small, so simple.”
“Yet the heavens is determined to keep me miserable. It didn’t take long before… Lilith died again. She died by suicide, struck down by some kind of heavenly thunder I couldn’t understand.”
“I fell into despair once more, but what happened gave me hope. Even if it was just the tiniest flicker, it kept me going. I kept cultivating and quickly surpassed my old self. I turned my inner demons into obsessions and managed to take half a step into that legendary realm.”
“Then, a thousand years after Lilith’s death, I finally found the new Lilith.”
“She was exactly the same as before—her looks, her personality, her hobbies, even her catchphrases. Still… she didn’t remember me and the things we had done together.”
“For two years… I stayed by her side.”
Ciel Hesse’s hand brushed over the third display, showing a smiling Lilith.
“In the third year, Lilith suddenly fell ill with a strange disease that I couldn’t understand. She was the princess of dragons, with a body as strong as a dragon’s, yet she inexplicably vomited blood in large mouthfuls. I tried everything to save her, but nothing worked. All I could do was watch as she grew weaker and weaker.”
“Finally, desperate, I sought out her mother, the queen of dragons. But she simply said, ‘Leave it to me,’ and took Lilith away. I never heard from them again.”
“Then, another thousand years passed, and Lilith appeared again, just as promised. She was still Lilith, but this time, she wasn’t struck by lightning or got sick. She just… suddenly died out of the blue. The night before, we were talking and laughing, planning for our bright future. But the next morning, when the sun rose… her body was already cold.”
“She still couldn’t make it past the third year. I counted it clearly, though she lived… a bit longer than the previous two times.”
“Everything felt so strange, like some cruel joke. I began to suspect the queen of dragons, so I went looking for answers. Of course, the queen didn’t tell me anything. She beat me up badly, even though we were in the same realm. I was no match for her.”
“But I didn’t give up. I couldn’t. The fourth time. The fifth time……. The hundredth time. I waited for Lilith to reappear again and again like a lunatic. I’d spend two happy fleeting years with her, then search for clues through the long, lonely millennium.”
“My efforts eventually paid off. As my power grew, I began to reach the ceiling of this world. It was then that I realized—something had changed. There was a powerful corrective force enveloping this world.”
“Not only Lilith’s memories, but everything and everyone connected to her would forget her after her death. All traces of her existence would be silently erased.”
“I don’t know why my memories aren’t affected, but during those years, I searched relentlessly for any clue about this corrective force. And eventually, all the signs pointed to one person.”
Ciel clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white as they cracked.
Luna watched her face, feeling a surge of fear for no apparent reason. She had never seen such intense, raw hatred in a person. It was as though Ciel’s eyes could burst into flames at any moment, burning everything in their path—and maybe even consuming herself.
“That person is the mother Lilith claimed to love her so much. The ruler of the dragons… The queen of dragons… REGALIS!”
What do you think?
