Chapter 22: Bai An'an's Redemption
"Remember, you're a maid now. You can't eat with the master. If you make her angry again, no one will be able to save you..."
Yan helped Heier up from the ground and examined her throat and limbs. Finding only some minor scrapes, she finally sighed in relief.
Heier heard these words and nodded silently, but her eyes remained fixed on the seemingly harmonious mother and daughter.
"I'll bring you food later. For now, just stay behind me so you don't..."
"Big sister," Heier suddenly turned to look at Yan who stopped at her call. "Just now, what did Bai An... I mean, what did the mistress mean by punishment?"
Even though Bai An'an's eyes said everything was fine, Heier couldn't calm her heart. There was an inexplicable worry, as if something terrible was about to happen around her.
Yan, who was putting the small knife back in her pocket, paused momentarily when she heard this question. But quickly, she returned to normal, her previously guilty expression becoming calm again.
"That's none of our business. Just remember, today the young mistress will suffer because of you."
For a level-two magician, ordinary pain punishments cannot wear down one's character. Heier wasn't a six-year-old child; when the time came, she would still be disobedient.
To make Heier obediently serve as a maid, they needed to target her personality. Although Heier seemed stubborn, judging from how her first concern upon entering the mansion was for her traveling companion, it was clear that in Heier's heart, friends ranked far above herself.
And Bai An'an's consciousness wasn't firm; she couldn't bear to see others suffer and would very likely protect her maid.
This was what Bai Xuerou had told Yan, and for this reason, Bai Xuerou had Heier spend the afternoon with her daughter to build a good relationship.
Otherwise, she would have acted when Heier was unconscious.
For Bai Xuerou, this was killing two birds with one stone: not only making Heier understand the consequences of defying her but also continuing to transform Bai An'an toward becoming a complete witch.
Bai Xuerou was very happy now, not just because her plan was proceeding perfectly, but also because she had just heard her lover's voice.
Now that even the White Night Witch had helped her, Bai Xuerou was more determined to push forward with her witch cultivation plan.
But the happier Bai Xuerou became, the more frightened the two little ones, Bai An'an and Heier, felt.
However, one feared the unknown future, while the other recalled painful memories.
"Today the punishment begins again... I wonder what kind of punishment it will be today... No, it's okay, Bai An'an. This time I'll definitely endure it like before!"
Bai An'an clenched her fists slightly, silently strengthening her resolve. After all, she had promised Heier that she would be fine.
Soon, Bai An'an finished dinner in Bai Xuerou's arms and, as usual, went to the sofa to watch a movie that Bai Xuerou had personally selected for her.
She won't make me watch that kind of movie in front of Heier, will she?
Bai An'an couldn't help but wonder. She didn't want Bai Xuerou to corrupt Heier, so she tugged at Bai Xuerou's collar.
"Hmm? What is it, my obedient daughter?"
"Um, could we not watch the kind of movies we used to watch today? After all, there are others here..."
Bai An'an said somewhat shyly, her words fully concerned with Heier. Hearing this, Bai Xuerou felt a surge of nameless anger, but to maintain her image as a good mother, she didn't act on it. Instead, she followed her daughter's wishes and didn't have Yan put in a romance film about love between girls. She opened another cabinet and pulled out a disc featuring a man bathing in the pouring rain.
Soon, the movie began. This time, the movie was called "The Shawshank Redemption," another foreign film. Bai An'an rarely watched movies before and didn't know what this one was about.
But in her eyes, since there was a male protagonist, it should be a normal movie.
And the result was just as Bai An'an expected—it was a normal, quite good movie. Although Bai An'an didn't know the specific plot, when she saw the protagonist and his friend joining forces to escape the warden's prison, her heart connected it to herself and Heier.
She was like the friend who had entered the mansion earlier, and Heier was the protagonist. Heier would, with her assistance, leave the mansion called Bai Xuerou and gain freedom, then come back to rescue her.
Bai An'an was so engrossed in the movie that she temporarily forgot she would be punished after her bath. But Heier wasn't in the mood to watch the movie; she was alone at the dining table, eating the leftovers from Bai An'an and Bai Xuerou's dinner.
While she was eating the leftovers, at some point, Bai Xuerou emerged from the bathroom with Bai An'an, who was wearing pink bear pajamas.
Only then did Heier's attention get reluctantly drawn.
"Does the mistress always go to bed this early?"
Looking at the vacant-eyed Bai An'an in Bai Xuerou's arms, Heier felt something was off but didn't dare ask the witch directly, so she asked indirectly.
"Yes, as my obedient daughter, early to bed and early to rise is the most basic rule. By the way, tomorrow morning, I hope to see breakfast prepared by you and Yan when I wake up."
Bai Xuerou didn't want to deal with Heier much, casually answering with a command before heading upstairs to Bai An'an's room.
"Going to bed already? Was her earlier talk about punishing An'an just a lie? Just to scare us?" Heier was stunned, thinking to herself. But considering how Bai Xuerou had almost strangled her at dinner, it didn't seem like a joke...
Perhaps the witch just wanted to frighten her daughter...
Thinking of this, Heier felt a bit better, secretly relieved she hadn't caused trouble for Bai An'an.@@novelbin@@
"Hmm... since I need to get up early tomorrow, I should quickly find my room."
Glancing at the maid washing dishes in the kitchen, Heier hurriedly left the dining table and quietly went upstairs.
Under Bai An'an's guidance earlier today, she had toured all the rooms on the second floor. Besides Bai An'an's own room, Heier remembered another room with two prepared beds. She figured that would be where she would stay until she escaped.
But as Heier passed by Bai An'an's room, her hearing, which was superior to normal humans, caught strange sounds.
"Strange, didn't the witch say they were going to sleep? Do witches stay up late too?"
A question mark popped up in Heier's mind. Coincidentally, the door wasn't fully closed. Out of curiosity, she decided to take a quick look before leaving.
Heier slowly approached, held her breath, and pushed the half-closed door open a crack. Her blue eyes peered inside through the gap.
But what she saw next made her completely regret her action.
What do you think?
