Chapter 8: Yan's Past
Walking down the stairs and back into the living room, Annie White saw that the dining table was already prepared with three bowls of millet porridge, three fried eggs, and a glass of milk.
Seeing the maid sister standing nearby with her hands folded at her waist, Annie quickly understood why she hadn't seen her earlier that morning—she had been preparing breakfast.
Snow White carried Annie to the seat with the milk and gently stroked her daughter's hair, which now had several white strands.
"Come now, don't cry so early in the morning, okay? As long as you behave, I won't be too rough with you."
"Re-really?"
After crying so much, Annie finally regained some sense. She was only six years old—if she tried to escape without considering the consequences, even if she managed to flee this mansion, she would just be sent back once she reached the city.
After all, Snow White was her legal mother. Even if Uncle Blue tried to intervene, he probably couldn't defeat a witch mother.
Especially after what happened in the bathroom, Annie's rationality had plummeted.
And even if she did manage to drive away her witch mother, she would only return to the orphanage, or perhaps experience unforeseen consequences due to changes in the timeline.
Like being adopted in the first place.
Rather than venturing into the unknown, it seemed better to gamble on the witch's maternal instinct.
Annie didn't yet realize that from the moment Snow White found her in this life, she had already formed close connections with many people.
"Really, Mother would never lie to you."
Snow White assured her earnestly. After thinking for a moment, Annie nodded and agreed, beginning to eat her porridge in small bites. Seeing her daughter's obedient and adorable manner, Snow White started eating her own breakfast.
The maid sister, seeming to remember what Annie had said yesterday, had prepared three portions, including one for herself.
After finishing the last of her milk, Annie contentedly rubbed her stomach, accidentally letting out a milk burp before quickly covering her little mouth, her face turning red.
Being mentally twenty-four years old, how could she make such a cute sound? It was so undignified...
But this embarrassment was only felt by Annie herself. To Snow White, it was simply adorable.
"Pff..."
She couldn't help laughing, standing up to hug her daughter and squeeze her affectionately. Even Yan, who rarely showed emotion, displayed a rare smile, though it quickly disappeared as something crossed her mind, her eyes filling with sadness.
"Alright, Mommy needs to go out today. Annie, be good and stay home. Don't wander around or you might get hurt, understand?"
After finishing cuddling her daughter, Snow White released Annie and held her by the shoulders, speaking earnestly like a perfect mother.
If not for what happened last night, Annie might have believed her, but now fear and distrust dominated her heart. Her current obedience was only to avoid punishment from Snow White.
Watching Snow White pick up her handbag and leave through the front door, seeing her drive away in a red Rolls-Royce through the window, Annie finally relaxed.
"The devil is finally gone..."
But just as she felt relief, she suddenly remembered there was another potentially demonic person behind her, making her quickly turn to look at the maid sister who was clearing the dishes.
Although the maid sister seemed harmless, what if she was a psychopath like Snow White?
After all, before revealing her true nature, Snow White had also appeared to be a gentle, intellectual big sister.
"Young miss... is something wrong?"
Perhaps Annie's gaze was too intense, as Yan looked up from her work toward Annie, tilting her head questioningly.
"I... nothing. I just wanted you to show me around the house. I'm afraid I might get lost."
Annie was clearly startled by the maid's sudden attention, her eyes darting around as she hastily made up a flimsy excuse.
Hearing this, Yan paused for a moment, then smiled and nodded.
"Of course, but please let me wash the dishes first."
With that, the maid sister took the bowls and utensils to the kitchen sink, leaving Annie standing there bewildered.
That's it? Just like that?
Annie had expected the maid to react harshly when she heard herself being called a devil, especially since the house's owner, Snow White, had left. But now it seemed the maid was quite civilized?
Remembering how the maid sister had constantly apologized in her ear last night, Annie was filled with curiosity about this person, but even more with fear.
She couldn't imagine what kind of person could stay with Snow White.
Yan washed the dishes quickly. Annie had barely sat down when she emerged from the kitchen and approached her.
"Young miss, now I'll show you around the mansion."
Yan extended her right hand respectfully. After considering for a moment, Annie gave her left hand.
And so, Annie was led through the enormous mansion, her small hand in the maid's larger one.
There wasn't much to say about the first floor—the huge living room and kitchen took up most of it, with the remaining space occupied by the entrance hall and two bedrooms, which Annie guessed were where Snow White and the maid slept.
On the second floor, apart from Annie's own room and the bathroom opposite, most rooms were empty with no decorations, not worth touring. However, a few rooms aroused Annie's curiosity.
One was the room at the end of the hallway. No matter what Annie said, Yan refused to let her see it. Another was a room called the "Incinerator," containing a huge furnace that radiated heat even from a distance.
Regarding this room, Yan explained that Snow White used to keep pets, and when they died, their bodies would be brought here to be cremated and buried as ashes.
There were also third and fourth floors above, but Yan didn't take Annie up there, saying that even she hadn't been allowed up by Snow White.
Hearing this, Annie couldn't help asking the maid sister:
"By the way, big sister, are you and... Mom friends?"
The fact that even the maid hadn't been allowed upstairs caught Annie's attention, making her curious about the relationship between the maid and Snow White.
"Hmm..." Being asked this, Yan thought slowly for a moment before answering, "Not exactly. My relationship with her is complicated, and I can't explain it clearly. But, the mistress is actually a very gentle person."
"What? She's a gentle person?"
Having been tormented by Snow White all night, Annie was startled by this statement.
After all, when Snow White turned into a witch, she was anything but gentle.
"Hmm? Young miss, what did you just say?"
"Nothing... Yan... why do you say... Mom is a gentle person?"
"Young miss, you've simply spent too little time with the mistress. After a few more days, you'll understand what I mean."
With lowered eyelids, Yan slowly began to relate her experience.
"I met the mistress a hundred years ago. It was a time of great upheaval, when people were starving and an unprecedented famine covered the land."
"I was just a nun in a church in a remote border town, but at that time the entire country was falling apart due to famine, let alone our peripheral town."
Like telling a story, Yan continued unhurriedly.
"Soon, people began to lose their humanity, hurting each other for food. Women like me quickly became targets. Later, while fleeing, I accidentally entered this forest and was found by the mistress. I was barely alive then. The mistress saved me and drove away the villains chasing me, allowing me to keep my life."
"At first, I was afraid like you, because I also experienced what happened to you last night. I can understand your feelings to some extent. Please don't be afraid. The mistress only loses control when things don't go her way. Most of the time, she is very gentle."
"Is... is that so?"
Upon hearing that the maid sister had also been modified with strange things by Snow White, Annie was slightly surprised. But when she saw Yan's white hair and recalled the few strands of her own hair that had turned white today, she believed it.
After all, such beautifully white hair didn't seem natural, not to mention the maid sister's pale skin.@@novelbin@@
Realizing that Yan wasn't strictly on Snow White's side, Annie felt relieved about the maid and gripped her hand tighter.
What do you think?
