Chapter 353 Whispers in the Night
The cobblestone streets of the city gleamed faintly under the moon's silver glow as Evan and Mina made their way back to their shared inn. The cool night air provided a welcome respite from the stifling atmosphere of the council chamber. Yet, the weight of their duties hung heavy in the air, casting a shadow on their usually easy demeanors.
"Lost in thought, are we?" Evan inquired, his voice gentle as he nudged Mina with his shoulder. Her brow furrowed in concentration, she barely looked at him.
Mina sighed, a deep breath that echoed the despair she felt. "I don't know, Evan," she admitted, her voice laced with doubt. "Can we really pull this off? This entire kingdom feels like it's on the brink of collapse."
Evan placed a reassuring hand on her sholder. "We've faced overwhelming odds before, haven't we?"
Mina offered a wan smile. "Yes, but this feels different. The demons are relentless, their numbers seemingly endless. And my…" she hesitated, her voice dropping to a whisper, "my level… it's stagnant."
Evan's brow furrowed. He knew Mina had been frustrated by her lack of progress. For months, even back at the holy empire, she had been stuck at level 65, unable to advance despite slaying countless monsters. It was a predicament he, thankfully, hadn't encountered as a warrior. His strength still grew with each battle.
"Don't let that worry you," he said, squeezing her arm gently. "You're still one of the most powerful mages in the world. Your spells are potent, your control unmatched. Levels are just numbers. They don't define your potential."
Mina glanced at him, a flicker of gratitude warming her eyes. "It's easy for you to say," she pouted out, a hint of playfulness returning to her voice. "You still get stronger with every monster you slay. All you have to do is swing that legendary sword around."

"Maybe," he replied, "but without your magic backing me up, I'd just be a glorified punching bag." He grinned. "Besides, have you forgotten the time you saved my hide with that last-minute teleport spell? Numbers don't tell that story."
Mina chuckled, the sound light and airy. "Alright, alright," she relented. "You make a good point. Still, it's unnerving. What if this is the limit of my potential? What if I can't fight back when I face a powerful demon all alone."
Evan met her gaze, his eyes filled with a conviction that warmed her from the inside out. "Then we face them together," he said. "We may not know what the future holds, but one thing's certain: you won't be alone in this fight. Never."
A blush crept up Mina's cheeks at the intensity of his words. His loyalty and support were a constant source of strength for her. She took a step closer, their faces mere inches apart.
"If you care so much," she whispered, her voice husky with unspoken emotions, "there are other ways to show it besides words, you know."
Evan's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait… is she...?" He mused, blush creeping on to his cheeks. A flicker of hope ignited within him. "Could it be that…?"
Mina, suddenly overcome by a wave of shyness, quickly averted her gaze. Her cheeks flamed a deep red, and her rapid breaths gave off her nervousness. "It's getting late," she mumbled, her voice barely audible. "We should get some rest. Big day tomorrow."
She quickened her pace, leaving Evan standing in the deserted street, a bewildered expression on his face. He watched her go, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. "Did she just…?"
He replayed the scene in his mind, trying to decipher the meaning behind her words. He harbored deep feelings for Mina, but he had never dared to voice them. Their roles as heroes, constantly on the brink of life and death, had always felt like a barrier to expressing anything more.
"Dummy," Mina shot back at him, her voice sounded playful yet frustrated.
Evan laughed, the sound echoing through the quiet night. Perhaps, he thought, his life was about to get a whole lot more interesting.
Ignoring the butterflies fluttering in his stomach, he caught up to Mina. As they entered the inn.
...
Meanwhile, far across the rooftops, bathed in the cool moonlight, a group of figures clad in white robes shifted their weight, observing the scene below. Aric, their leader, his face obscured by the hood of his cloak, leaned in closer, keeping his gaze fixed on Evan and Mina as they entered the inn.
"They seem… chummy," Kiren, a woman with fiery red hair and piercing emerald eyes, remarked, a smirk playing on her lips as she crossed her arms. "Can you believe we were tasked with protecting a couple of lovebirds?"
Aric remained silent, his expression unreadable. Finally, he straightened, his voice a low murmur. "Do not underestimate them, Kiren. They may be young, but their skills are undeniable. And our presence here is not simply for show."
Kiren tapped her foot impatiently, clearly feeling restless. "Of course, Master Aric. But honestly, watching them like hawks is getting tiresome. Shouldn't we be doing something more… proactive?"
Aric let out a sigh. "Patience, Kiren. Our master wouldn't have sent us here unless there was a purpose. This war is about to take a significant turn, and when it does, we will be right there in the thick of it."
Calatica, unable to contain her frustration any longer, paced across the rooftop. "I second that. All this waiting around is starting to get on my nerves."
Aric nodded. "As I just said, we won't be idle for long. In fact, I have a feeling our first mission is about to begin." He turned his gaze back towards the inn, a glint of anticipation in his eyes.
He turned his gaze back towards the inn, a glint of anticipation flickering in his eyes. The heroes, oblivious to the watchful gaze upon them, were about to face a new challenge, one orchestrated by the mysterious figures in white. The delicate balance of power in the war was about to be disrupted, and Aric and his forces were poised to play an important role.
What do you think?
