Chapter 301: Mr. Du Wei, an enthusiastic citizen
“Sir, what did you just say shouldn’t be too few…”
The security guard didn’t catch Du Wei’s words clearly and thought he was complaining about something.
Du Wei frowned and said to the guard, “Nothing, thank you for your cooperation. See you next time.”
Having said that, he turned and walked away.
The guard scratched his head, watching Du Wei walking in the rain, and muttered, “What a weirdo, well, never mind.”
…
As Du Wei had mentioned, there were too few members of the Veda Sect; even if there were more than fifty cultists of the Veda Sect, it was inconsequential compared to the current issue.
His grudge against the Veda Sect was not new.
Du Wei knew the Veda Sect’s modus operandi well; over twenty people had died indirectly or directly at his hands.
Although the Veda Sect was a cult, it wouldn’t be so senseless as to lower its guard against him and send only fifty people to kill him.
After all, Du Wei had taken the lead this time as the Deputy Chief Judge of the church, personally thwarting the Veda Sect’s plans.
Not that he believed the Veda Sect’s plans had a high chance of success…
But still, there should have been at least a hundred people involved, not including cultists of the bishop level like Ruth.
“There must be members of the Veda Sect elsewhere; I need to wait for an opportunity, otherwise things may develop in a direction I do not wish to see.”
Du Wei sat in the car, silently contemplating.
His current purpose was straightforward: to use the assassination mechanism of the Evil Spirit to wipe out the members of the Veda Sect in one fell swoop.
Firstly, to give the Veda Sect a warning, to keep those madwomen quiet for a while.
Secondly, for the Evil Spirit’s sake itself: only if it grows stronger can it contend with the Evil Entity within the Joker Card; otherwise, once the Evil Entity assimilated the Evil Spirit, he would be the next unfortunate victim.
The most important point was that, regardless of how strong the Evil Spirit was now, it could not cause too much trouble.
By keeping it in opposition to, and even slightly weaker than, the Evil Entity, it would stay within a controllable limit.
“Certainly not all one hundred people can die at the hands of the Evil Spirit, but fifty is also not enough…”
Having estimated an approximate number of casualties, Du Wei took out the mask.
The Evil Spirit’s killing mechanism had a very wide scope of transmission.
Anyone who saw its photo or made eye contact with it could become a target.
Du Wei could put on the mask and don the Evil Spirit’s shell to confront the members of the Veda Sect directly, but that approach was too high-profile and would easily alert the Veda Sect that everything stemmed from him.
Plainly put, he wanted to make this look like a sudden incident.
Under the premise that no one knew he had returned to New York, he would deal with the cultists of the Veda Sect.
Then, in the final moments, as the person in charge of the Evil Spirit incident in New York City, he would make a successful appearance, creating the illusion of having arrived after the fact…
“The Evil Spirit cannot stray too far from the mask, so if I exploit this point, I can actually create a chain reaction phenomenon.”
“As long as one member of the Veda Sect becomes a target of the Evil Spirit, and the Spirit can’t kill them immediately, it will provide them with a premise to spread it among themselves, but I have to make sure this is controllable.”
As Du Wei said this, his tone was a bit peculiar.
If he didn’t manage how the members of the Veda Sect interacted with others, the Evil Spirit might end up killing Veda Sect members on one hand, and innocent bystanders on the other.
That would make things messier…
“I need to instill a sense of crisis in them so that they gather together… and before that, I need to ensure that at least one of them becomes a target of the Evil Spirit.”
With that in mind, Du Wei took out his phone and called the New York City police.
“I want to report an illegal gathering…”
…
The recent situation of the Veda Sect was far from ideal.
Their headquarters were not in New York, but in Europe.
Yet when it came to matters of faith, the friction between the Veda Sect and the Church had never ceased.
The shadow of the Veda Sect could be found in Massas City, and their plans had already been underway in Scolyn City for several months, not to mention the fire incident at Maria Maternity Hospital in Esselgreen City twenty years ago.
The Veda Sect had many dealings, but their luck had been terrible lately, constantly facing setbacks. If their research on creating Evil Spirits was not close to success, they would probably be considering withdrawing their influence back to Europe by now.
Under these circumstances, Fiona had newly risen to the rank of a bishop within the Veda Sect.
The structure of the Veda Sect was quite distorted.
The hierarchy was pyramid-shaped; with superiors not dying, those below could never advance.
It was a deformed organization that bound all Cultists with twisted faith.
Many years ago, Fiona and Ruth had entered the Veda Sect together. As the latter rose to the rank of bishop first, Fiona could only become a senior Cultist, unable to climb any higher.
In this remote, old district.
On the second floor of a house.@@novelbin@@
The room adjacent to the window was filled with a heavy stench of blood.
About a dozen young female Cultists silently stood behind Fiona, watching as the bishop stabbed a short knife repeatedly into the body of a gaunt vagrant.
Each person’s expression was filled with excitement, among them was a woman dressed in casual loungewear, looking quite out of place.
Clearly, she had just joined the Veda Sect, possibly within the last day or two.
The sounds of anguished grunts rang out ceaselessly.
The vagrant’s limbs were bound, all tendons severed, and his tongue had been removed.
Beneath the vagrant was the pattern of a Hexagram.
At each point, there lay a piece dripping with fresh blood: a tongue, the index finger of a right hand, an eye, an ear, a small section of intestines…
Fiona solemnly used the short knife to cut open the muscles around the vagrant’s heart and skillfully removed it, placing it at the last point of the Hexagram.
“Praise Veda…”
With her words concluded, the vagrant painfully ceased to breathe, yet his bloodshot eyes bulged in fury. Upon closer inspection, one might discern the profound hatred and bitterness within.
The Cultists standing behind Fiona bowed their heads, placing their hands over their chests as if partaking in a noble ceremony. They began to chant the doctrines of the Veda Sect in a dreamy voice.
“Life brings pain, only death is eternal. Return to the embrace of the Vedas, to be with Them…”
Fiona, too, was reciting, but as she did, she produced a Scarecrow, stuffing it into the corpse of the vagrant, in place of the heart.
She was conducting a ritual, sacrificing an innocent to create a more powerful, perfected Evil Corpse…
When suddenly…
A doorbell rang, cutting across everyone’s chanting.
Fiona looked emotionlessly at the woman in loungewear. The latter immediately turned pale, “It might be those damned neighbors. I will send her away right now.”
Fiona said dismissively, “Rowling, this is your house. Do not appear too panicked, or it will cause unnecessary trouble.”
The woman, Rowling, hurriedly responded, “Yes, Bishop.”
With that, she quickly left the room and headed downstairs.
On her way, Rowling’s heart burned with rage. Damn it… If it really was those neighbors, she’d sacrifice them to Veda tonight…
But upon reaching the door and peering through the peephole, what she saw was a man in a hooded coat and a mask, holding an A4 paper with a bizarre black-and-white photo printed on it.
It was a missing person flyer…
