Chapter 117 117: Between Father And Son
Ren, Darius and Felix watched as their father walked to the rack and selected a sword of his own, holding it up for inspection.
When he was satisfied, he walked to the centre of the training yard. "Let me see for myself what you all are capable of. Terence." Ren blinked. "Step forward."
Ren exchanged a glance with his brothers, a smile appearing on his face. It was time to test himself against a Rank 5 knight and see where he stood.
He might even get a few level up messages from it. All his opponents lately had been well within his strength to handle.
Lord Ross held the sword loosely at his side, staring at his son. "Come at me."
Ren didn't need to be told twice. He dashed forward, his sword flashing as he attacked his father.
The man blocked them casually, not even moving from where he stood. Ren's eyes narrowed as the man kept blocking, a look of what could only be utter disappointment on his face. It was a look that said 'I expected more.'
It prickled his pride. He'd been holding back to avoid revealing his new strength and speed but this wouldn't do.
His eyes narrowed as he increased his speed a bit, attacking even more aggressively. In response, his father increased the tempo of the fight, forcing Ren to meet him blow for blow.
And when he adapted, his father raised the speed again. He kept raising it until Ren was as fast as he could go without revealing his secret. He gritted his teeth, frustration in every move he made.
He'd gotten so used to fighting inferior opponents and now that he had someone who could match his skill even in sword fighting, he couldn't do anything.
This was a wakeup call. His father wouldn't be the only one. There would be warriors out there that could fight just as well.
In fact, he wasn't so sure he could best the Knight Commander at the border in swordsmanship. After all, the man had always defeated his opponents with ease. Who said he'd seen everything the man could do?
He thrusted towards his father's chest but the man batted away his sword, still looking casual. Throughout the fight, he hadn't once attacked Ren.
Then, without warning, his sword blurred, streaking straight towards Ren's heart.
Ren's eyes widened. He could feel the killing intent behind the strike. His father really wanted to kill him!
His body moved before he could even complete the thought. He twisted, unnaturally fast, his sword coming up in a flash.
The two blades collided with a loud crash, sending sparks flying, and his father stepped back, his expression unreadable as his sword shattered.
Silence filled the training yard.
"Holy shit." Darius whispered.
"That speed..." Felix murmured. "You got a new imbuement?"
Ren laughed sheepishly, hands coming up to the back of his head.
"Damn!" Darius laughed. "What kind of monster are you?"
Ren laughed it off but his eyes were on his father. The attack had been a test, and whatever Lord Ross had been looking for, it seems like he'd found it.
"Darius." The man said. "Step forward."

Ren followed quietly behind his father as they walked to his study. The training was over and the man wanted to have a word in private.
His eyes bored into the back of the man's head as he wondered what the man wanted to speak to him about. Had he found out something?
Lord Ross didn't look back until they finally arrived. He glanced at Ren before pushing open the door to his study and stepping inside.
Ren followed and stood at attention as the man moved to light the lantern on his desk. A second later, light bloomed in the room.
Lord Ross sat behind his desk, steepling his fingers as he stared at Ren. A few seconds later, he spoke.
"Do you have a Divine Gift?"
Ren almost choked on his own spit. Out of all the questions he'd been expecting, that hadn't been one of them. "I— I..."
His father gave a single, slow nod. "You do."
Ren swallowed hard, unsure of what to say. The room suddenly felt warmer, like the lantern's flame had doubled in size.
"Why have you hidden it?" Lord Ross asked.
Ren opened his mouth to answer, then paused. Wait a minute. Why did I hide my Gift from the family?
"I… I don't know." He admitted softly. "It was easier. At first, I didn't want the attention. Then with each passing day, it just became harder to speak about. If I'd spoken about it, I'd have had to explain why I'd kept it hidden in the first place."
His father stared at him in silence. Then, Lord Ross reached beneath the desk and pulled out a sword, setting it on the table.
Freedom. The sword of the Ross family.
"This," his father said, voice low, "was… passed down to me. And I had always intended to pass it on to the one most worthy. But not now."
Ren stared, speechless.
"You are still young." Lord Ross continued. "But I believe I understand why you want to leave the Ross lands after turning sixteen. You are chasing something. Things out there that you must face. And I cannot stop you."
Ren's heart pounded. "You know about the Calamities?" He whispered.
His father met his gaze evenly. "I do."
"How?" Ren asked, breathless.
Lord Ross held his son's gaze. "Because I am not as blind to the world as you may think. Your mother and I have seen more than you think."
He steepled his fingers. "The world is changing, Terence. It has been for some time now. And those changes are not kind."
Ren swallowed hard. "Why haven't you told anyone? Why keep it a secret?"
"Because even we do not know the form the Calamities will take. And panic is more dangerous than ignorance. There is also the fact that no proof exists. Yet."
Silence filled the room at his words.
Lord Ross's voice broke it. "You are strong, Terence. Everyone in this kingdom knows it. The tales of your duel at the capital still spread as we speak. But your strength can be your greatest weakness."
"Power is a blade with no hilt. If you grip it carelessly, it will cut you."
Ren nodded slowly.
"Do not let your skill, your Divine Gift, or your power cloud your vision. Greed can blind you. Pride can blind you. And lust... lust can make you a fool."
Ren looked down at the floor.
"You will face temptations out there. You will be praised, worshiped even. But always remember. No matter what power you wield, you are still human. And humans break."
"Do not let your arrogance lead to your death. No matter who your opponent is, approach the battle like they're stronger than you."
There was silence again.
Then, Ren asked quietly, "Why didn't you ask what my Divine Gift is?"
Lord Ross raised an eyebrow. "Because it doesn't matter."
Ren blinked.
"A Divine Gift is just another tool." His father said. "It is unique to its wielder and is not something I can train you in. It cannot be passed down. Whatever it is, it is yours. And it will be yours alone to master."
Ren let those words sink in.
Then, his father nodded. "All I want to know is its name."
Ren looked up, meeting his father's eyes.
"Unfettered Enhancement." He said.
Lord Ross considered the name for a moment, then nodded once. "Fitting."
He looked up, giving his son something almost resembling a small smile. "It found the right wielder."
What do you think?
