Chapter 98: One Of Us Shall Die
Chapter 98: One Of Us Shall Die
Octavian stood at the top of the colosseum, staring in the direction the arrow had streaked towards before disappearing.
His fingers twitched at his side, eager to reach for anything that came.
Seconds, turned into a minute. A minute turned to even more minutes.
But nothing happened.
The king's soul never came.
His fingers curled into fists. If the king had truly died, his soul should have drifted toward him. But it hadn't.
He frowned. Had he failed? Had the arrow missed? That should be impossible. The king wasn't strong enough to have stopped One Shot.
This meant that one of two things had happened. Either the king survived the attack, or someone else had intervened.
The crowd in the colosseum started cheering again, and he walked to the edge to peer down at them. The fights had resumed but the king was not yet back.
This wasn't unexpected. The king had sometimes taken a long rest in previous tournaments and the matches had gone on. But what does this mean? Octavian wondered.
Was the king still alive?
He stood there, thinking about the best way to go about this. Should he just abandon killing the king and go directly to kill Lilith?
It would be harder to infiltrate the depths of the palace than the outer palace vault, due to the caliber of people imprisoned underneath but it was doable. The only problem would be fighting his way out.
But first, he needed to scout things out. He blinked, looking up to see that from the position of the sun, he'd spent at least an hour thinking up here.
He huffed. That's a weakness. Never be caught unalert.
Turning, his gaze turned towards the palace and almost froze. But he was beneath such responses.
The thing that had caught his attention was the long column of palace soldiers, moving with speed from the palace toward the colosseum. He narrowed his eyes. This could only mean one thing.
The king is dead.
His jaw clenched in realization. Someone else had killed the king before he could. His mind immediately went to one person.
Terence Ross.
Wait a minute. He frowned, remembering the incident that had resulted in the Ross kid being brought back to life. What if…
A dark fury bubbled up within him, but he quickly suppressed it, his expression shifting to one of calm. He had no proof that the kid had stolen his kill. Not yet.
With that settled, he began climbing down the colosseum as fast as he could, managing to slip away before the soldiers arrived to surround the structure.
He walked, each step steady like a rock, towards the only place he was sure he'd be able to find the Penny Prince.
Walking in without listening to the stammers of the guards, he made his way inside the private mansion. He would not be made to wait like a lackey.
The Penny Prince was exactly where Octavian expected him to be, lounging in his usual seat like a satisfied cat. The prince smirked as if he had been expecting this visit.
"Ah, Octavian. What a pleasant surprise."
Octavian's voice was flat. "The king is dead."
Anders laughed in response, speaking like they were discussing the weather. "Yes, I heard. Quite tragic, really."
"And it wasn't my kill."
Anders sighed dramatically. "No, it wasn't."
Octavian's eyes darkened. "It was the Ross."
Anders grinned. "Yes. It was."
Octavian's fury evaporated, leaving a sense of finality. "And how did you know it was him who killed the king?"
Anders gestured lazily at a nearby table and that was when Octavian saw it. The king's head, eyes half open and unfocused.
"I see." Octavian said stoically. This was the way it should've been. "And Lilith?"
"Handed over to Ren." Anders said, waving a negligent hand. "He deserved it don't you think? It isn't that easy to commit regicide, you know."
Octavian exhaled, his fingers twitching at his sides. He really needed to do something. To tear something apart. "You gave him the same deal as me. You played me."
Anders laughed. "Oh, don't be so dramatic. You already knew you'd be up against him."
Octavian said nothing. He stared at Anders for a few seconds before nodding. "Very well."
He turned to leave, the voice of the Penny Prince stopping him for a few seconds. "Oh, and Octavian? Remember, Ren and Lilith are off limits. Or I'll destroy everything you hold dear."
Octavian said nothing, walking out in response. Anders' words flew in one ear and out the other.
He wasn't angry. A few minutes ago, yes. But now, no. This was how things should've been. He shouldn't have been fighting like an idiot over someone the Penny Prince intended to use.
You're out now, Lilith. It's time we meet.
It didn't matter what Anders wanted. Lilith was a part of the Underwood family, which meant she was his responsibility.
Anders Vermilion can't tell him what to do. No. He'll kill Lilith today and there was nothing the prince would be able to do about it. The prince needed an Underwood. If he couldn't get Lilith, he'd have to tolerate him, the true Underwood.
He stopped in front of the Underwood manor, staring up at the mansion. His mind went back to that fateful day. That day he'd tasted the afterlife at his sister's hands.
He was here to return the favor.
When he'd received the letter from his father about Lilith's trip to the capital, he'd known the truth of it in his bones.
Only one of them would leave the capital alive. And his Body Domination canceled out Lilith's Soul Domination. It had to.
With a dark grin spreading across his face, he walked through the gates, ignoring the bows of the guards around him.
"M— My Lord!" He ignored Lilith's guard, Elias, as the man stepped in front of him with a bow. Octavian didn't bother stopping, swinging the back of his hand at the man and sending him crashing into a wall.
"What th—" He didn't let the Ross lord's guard finish his words before bashing his head into the ground.
Flicking away the speck of blood on his hands, he walked forward until he got to the room he could sense Lilith in.
He pulled it open to see Lilith sleeping on a bed and her fiance sitting at her side.
"Well, well, well." He stepped into the room, his grin widening to show teeth. "The both of you are here. Good. I don't have to go searching to kill you both."
What do you think?
