Famous Among Top Surgeons in the 90s

Chapter 150: Do you want to come to the cardiology department?

Chapter 150: Do you want to come to the cardiology department?

“This patient has a history of chronic hypertension and angina. It would be more appropriate to consider the patient’s blood pressure readings as well as past medical records for comparison. If the condition has progressed beyond what it was before, which would mean it’s more serious, then without a doubt, hospitalization is needed, and we may even have to consider interventional surgery,” said Xie Wanying.

Doctor Lin nodded at her words and then whispered some advice to her, “You should also keep in mind that if there are no beds available, we’ll need to compare the conditions of other patients before making a decision.”

Xie Wanying took the lesson to heart and nodded vigorously.

The normally stern Doctor Lin couldn’t help but smile. He patted her on the shoulder and asked, “Do you like cardiology? I feel like you might have a strong interest in it. I saw you paying a lot of attention to cardiology patients last night. Would you consider specializing in cardiology in the future?”

Just then, Doctor Jiang happened to pass by and overheard their conversation, poking his head through the curtain to remind Doctor Lin, “Be careful. If Huang Zhilei finds out you’re trying to poach someone—”

“Why would he find out? I won’t tell, and you won’t tell. Besides, she hasn’t graduated yet,” Doctor Lin said unabashedly, “It’s her own decision which department she wants to go to in the future.”

...

“Old Lin, she’s on the surgical track. The other student standing next to her is the one on the medical track that your cardiology department should be vying for,” Doctor Jiang threw a wet blanket on Doctor Lin’s enthusiasm, “If anyone’s to compete for her, it should be me and Huang Zhilei first, not you.”

“Who says? There are plenty of medical students who switch from surgery to internal medicine or vice versa during their studies,” retorted Doctor Lin firmly.

“That proportion is exceedingly low!” Doctor Jiang argued back with equal firmness.

The sight of the two teachers arguing with neither willing to back down made Xie Wanying and Zhao Zhaowei somewhat anxious.

“I’m not going to argue with you.” Doctor Lin turned around, leading the two students away, and said to the other student, Zhao Zhaowei, “It’s your turn now.”

Was it his turn to do an electrocardiogram for the patient? Zhao Zhaowei was rubbing his hands in anticipation.

Normally, inspired by the female top student in their class, the male students were equally diligent. Knowing that Xie Wanying had already self-studied textbooks in diagnostics, internal medicine, and surgery, they were well-prepared too.

Zhao Zhaowei, whose family included a well-known grandparent doctor and a study full of medical books, was accustomed to reading them since childhood. He was very clear about what an ECG was and how to perform one, especially knowing that he would be practicing internal medicine; he definitely had to review this material in advance. He had long heard from his grandfather that patients with heart conditions made up a significant portion of hospital visits, so it was essential to learn this skill.

No problem at all, Zhao Zhaowei told himself, having just watched Xie Wanying operate without noticing any difficulty.

Simply placing a few electrodes and suction cups on the patient’s body seemed like such a simple task, surely easier than the nurses giving injections.

Doctor Lin pulled aside another curtain, revealing a young female patient, possibly a high school girl, around seventeen or eighteen years old.

One might say Doctor Lin really knew how to choose patients for the students. He picked a male patient for the female medical student and a female patient for the male medical student, precisely to train the medical students in handling patients of the opposite sex.

Compared to Xie Wanying’s composure while dealing with the elderly man just now, Zhao Zhaowei was feeling a tad embarrassed in front of this younger girl, starting to sweat a little.

Xie Wanying helped her classmate push the ECG machine over.

“Let me explain to you, I’m going to perform an ECG on you. Don’t be scared, it’s not like getting an injection, it won’t hurt at all,” Zhao Zhaowei reassured the young girl.
