Chapter 158: [158] Call back to the hospital
The traffic police lifted the weak young man into the police car.
Xie Wanying picked up another emergency medical kit in the ambulance.
The nurse ran over to help, taking the oxygen bag for her.
Zhao Zhaowei hesitated about what he should do, whether to go with his classmates or to stay and continue with Doctor Jiang. Doctor Jiang hadn’t told him what to do, leaving him unable to choose.
“Teacher Jiang—” he called out, but Doctor Jiang had already run off. Zhao Zhaowei couldn’t catch up and was afraid to ask, lest he bother the teacher.
With no better option, he stomped his foot, and Zhao Zhaowei turned and followed Xie Wanying into the police car.
“Thank you for coming,” Xie Wanying said with joy as she put an oxygen tube on the patient, seeing his arrival.
Having more people to help was always good.
Hearing her thanks, Zhao Zhaowei felt ashamed. He was embarrassed about his own hesitation just moments ago.
They both sat in the back seat of the police car with the patient, while two traffic police officers sat in the front, one driving and the other using a walkie-talkie to connect with the command center, requesting support: “We are urgently transporting a patient to Guoxie. Please help coordinate with the traffic police and traffic lights along the route so we can get the patient to the hospital as quickly as possible.”
With the siren blaring, the police car left the accident scene, and everyone on board began to harbor hope.
“Don’t worry, we’ll get you to the hospital as fast as we can!” the traffic police officer promised the young man in the back.
The traffic cop drove both fast and steady. A faint smile appeared on the young man’s face.
Doctor Jiang, who had watched the police car drive away, definitely had concerns. He called his hospital’s emergency department to report the situation.
The emergency nurse answered his call, asking, “Doctor Jiang, are you coming back?”
“I can’t come back just yet. Who’s on duty in cardiothoracic surgery today?” Doctor Jiang asked.
The emergency nurse checked the doctor’s duty roster: “It’s Doctor Yang, just like last night.”
“Tell him to come down to emergency right away and get ready.”
“Doctor Jiang, what do you want Doctor Yang to do?”
“Is Doctor Lin there?” The nurse probably didn’t understand, so Doctor Jiang sought help from a colleague.
“Yes, he is.” The emergency nurse called Doctor Lin and then handed the phone over to him as he approached.
“What’s going on, Old Jiang?” Doctor Lin asked.
“I had Xie Wanying and her classmate escort a cardiac patient back to our hospital because there were no ambulances available!” Doctor Jiang explained urgently. “Hurry up and get Old Yang down to emergency; he’s on duty for cardiothoracic surgery today and can take care of any issues.”
Upon hearing this, Doctor Lin drew a sharp breath.
After being notified, Doctor Yang hurried down from the wards to the emergency department and confronted Doctor Lin: “What are you saying? Who authorized this? Having two students transport a cardiac patient back on their own, and not even in an ambulance?”
Doctor Yang was on the verge of roaring: “Are you mad, are you mad?”
“Calm down, Old Yang!” Doctor Lin grabbed Doctor Yang’s shoulders, feeling that Doctor Yang’s state was almost the same as his own last night, and explained, “It’s not ordinary students transporting the patient. Remember the emergency surgery I transferred to you last night? That patient’s resuscitation last night was performed by the female intern who is now transporting the patient back, the one doing the cardiac compressions.”
Oh? Doctor Yang thought about it and remembered praising the swift and accurate response during the surgery the night before. Wasn’t it the patient saved by Doctor Lin and Zhu Huicang?
What do you think?
