Chapter 758 Might of an Emperor
"Nookie, let's regroup! The Fire Dragon Emperor is about to kill the manticore!" Shirley ordered.
Shye instructed Nookie to obey Shirley if he wasn't present at the scene.
Hence, the little necrollin immediately complied, momentarily recalling his remaining thirty-nine corpse puppets, having already lost six in the battle.
However, the fire dragon army suffered even greater losses, as only seven of them were left after battling the corpse army.
Moreover, there were two more on the verge of being incapacitated.
It was a decisive victory for Nookie, Shirley, and the Doppelganger.
Shirley's orders turned out to be correct, as the next moment, a roar of anguish, resentment, and defiance, echoed just a few hundred meters away from them.
A Throgon Overlord has fallen, slain by another.
The lifeless body of the Stygian manticore crashed to the ground with a resounding thud, sending up clouds of dust, as the Fire Dragon Emperor placed one of its massive hind legs on the manticore's chest and roared in pride and victory.
It wasn't too happy about the fact that it killed a wounded overlord.
Rather, the draconic emperor was proud of killing the Stygian Manticore in its berserk state, which highlighted its courage and ferocity in battle.
It knew that the manticore was on its last legs and that there was no need to engage it in a head-on fight.
All the Fire Dragon Emperor had to do was wait for the [Savage Defiance] skill to time out.
However, as a prideful member of the dragon race, the draconic overlord would never opt for such a cowardly victory.
No.
It sought to demonstrate its power and show the world that, even with the Stygian Manticore's attributes greatly amplified by its race's innate berserk skill, the might of the emperor of fire dragons was still superior.
With this, none of the other draconic emperors could take away anything from its accomplishment of defeating another Throgon Overlord.
Gazing triumphantly at the heart of the fallen Stygian Manticore, where its core was located, the Fire Dragon Emperor suppressed its urge, knowing this wasn't the time to consume the defeated overlord's core to boost its power.
After all, an overlord core wasn't like a simple magic pill that could instantly increase the draconic emperor's attributes.
The core's energy would first go berserk within its body, forcing the victorious overlord to struggle to digest the energy and only enjoy its benefits after surviving a perilous tribulation.
If the Fire Dragon Emperor consumed the core now, it would simply meet a foolish end, unable to defend itself from the attacks of the humans and the corpse puppet army.
'Tch, I should have brought more of my subordinates...' the Fire Dragon Emperor mused as it surveyed the sorry state of its army, slightly regretting not bringing more fire dragons along. 'No matter, these lesser creatures are no match for me anyway...'
In the next moment, the triumphant overlord let out a commanding roar, rallying the remaining members of its fire dragon army to join the battle.
For dragons, retreat was never an option.
Even those gravely injured were bound to fight to the death. Once again, the battle between the corpse puppet army and the dragons began.
This time, however, the outcome was markedly different.
Nookie's corpse puppet army, despite their superior numbers, was decisively driven back, with the weaker puppets being swiftly destroyed by the draconic emperor.
Part of the reason was that the fire dragons were suddenly fighting with greater ferocity, showing enhanced intelligence, speed, and strength.
This was due to the Fire Dragon Emperor's [Imperial Draconic Aura], which amplified the physical and mental attributes of its subordinates.
As a result, the battle became one-sided, despite Shirley's efforts to contain the Fire Dragon Emperor from time to time.
Unfortunately, she had only recently become a hero, and while she might be capable of facing an elder dragon, taking on a dragon emperor was still out of her league.
To stand on equal footing with such a peak-level being, one that could threaten even the strongest of heroes, she would need to unlock more of the Valenzian Warrior Hero Crest's powers.
If not for Shye's Ravenous Doppelganger managing to fight the Fire Dragon Emperor to a stalemate from time to time, Nookie's puppet army would have been overwhelmed even quicker.
The Doppelganger, however, was aware that it only had seventy percent of its original's vitality, which was why it fought so cautiously.
After all, if destroyed, it would revert to level one with only sixty percent of Shye's vitality attribute.
It couldn't fight like a madman.
Moreover, its trump cards were on cooldown, so there was only so much it could do.
"Lucius! Big Boo!" Nookie exclaimed, forcing itself to suppress the heartache of losing two more of its corpse puppets—one (S)-ranked and one (S-)-ranked.
It knew that it couldn't lose focus at this moment. Stay updated via My Virtual Library Empire
Otherwise, it would lose more of its beloved puppets.
Sadly, no matter how hard it focused, none of its current puppets were strong enough to fight against the Fire Dragon Emperor.
Even the Stygian Garuda was sent skidding backward every time it attempted to attack, managing to only deal minimal damage to the draconic emperor.
A few moments later, Nookie made a mistake, causing the Stygian Garuda, along with the (S)-ranked Earth Serpent and Bloodskin Ogre, to group in one spot, giving the Fire Dragon Emperor the perfect opportunity to obliterate all three with a single strike.
The little necrollin also realized it, but it was already too late.
An enormous fireball had already materialized at the emperor's gaping maw.
"Goro!! Slinky!! Big Borg!!" Nookie cried out in despair.
Just as it feared its most prized possessions would be destroyed in a single blast, a blue fireball suddenly shot toward the Fire Dragon Emperor's [Draconic Fireball] and collided with it, sinking in as though absorbed.
In the next moment, the red fireball imploded from within, consumed by Zeth's blue flames.
Shocked by the sight, the Fire Dragon Emperor looked towards the source of the blue fireball.
It then saw two equines—one as dark as starless midnight and one as white as untainted snow—both charging toward it with arrogant expressions.
The Fire Dragon Emperor was displeased.
It believed that only it was permitted to bear such an expression, considering it a grave sin for lesser beings to display such a countenance.
"Heh, cowardly white stallion, what finally made you face your fears? Is that black mare your little lover? It doesn't matter—I'll reduce both of you to ashes." the draconic emperor declared.
Only, it didn't expect that the tongues of the two equines were just as vicious.
"Heh, Delusional red lizard, do you think I'm afraid of you?" Aemorus shot back with a cold glare. "I simply didn't think that you were worth my attention earlier, especially since I was looking for my beloved partner. However, don't worry, I shall give your pathetic self some attention now."
"You still have the gall to talk when my fireball obliterated yours rather easily, winged skink? Does your race dwell in wonderland for you to have such illusory positivity? I can't help but doubt the intelligence of your race now…" Zeth added, further infuriating the prideful Fire Dragon Emperor.
After shaking in anger for a while, the draconic emperor finally managed to recollect himself.
"Fine, you two foolish steeds, I'll show you where you truly stand in the creature hierarchy…"
What do you think?
