She remembered Nathaniel’s expression in the hospital, and could tell that today’s incident had dealt him a heavy blow.

Now, Dylan was in a coma in the ICU Ward, and Mrs. Summers was already dead, with no one knowing the truth. But their speculations were probably mostly correct, given how utterly irrational Dylan’s behavior had been at the time.

Purple pondered whether she should give Nathaniel those photos since he probably wanted to know about his origins more than anyone else.

She hesitated.

After all, the photos couldn’t prove anything definitive about Mrs. Summers and Dylan; they only suggested an intimate relationship. Would showing them to Nathaniel now seem like kicking him when he was down?

Moreover, having intimate photos of one’s mother in someone else’s possession would be an insult to his pride.

After reflecting for a moment, Purple decided to destroy the photos.

Releasing the photos would lead to two outcomes: either it would bring about even greater resentment from Nathaniel or it would worsen the Summers family’s already dire situation.

There was no need to keep them around.

Carrying the box downstairs, she ran into Alexander.

“Where are you going?” Alexander asked.

“Going to burn some stuff,” Purple didn’t hide it from him and opened a corner of the box’s lid to let him see inside.

Alexander raised an eyebrow and put on his coat to join her outside.

The two found a pile of dry leaves by the lakeside in the garden. Alexander lit the fire, and Purple threw the photos into it, one by one.

During this, Alexander briefly flipped through the photos, his gaze murky, it was unclear if he felt sorrow or anger.

Purple, watching his expression, asked in a soft voice, “Do you… ever think about her? I mean… that Purple, your sister.”

Alexander chuckled suddenly and ruffled her hair, “Why, afraid I might get sad?”

Purple coughed uncomfortably and said in a muffled voice, “Well, she was your sister after all…”

“I don’t really feel much.” Alexander stared at the fire in front of him and replied softly, “I was eight when Purple was born. Right after that, Old Master Summers passed away, Janelle Roberts came back to fight for the estate, and from the cherished young master, I turned into a bastard of questionable legitimacy. Everything turned upside down; there was no time to care for an infant in swaddling clothes. By the time Purple was eight, I was already sixteen and had gone to France by myself, so I had even less to do with her.”

She felt a little sad hearing this.

Although she grew up without her parents’ love, she had her grandmother, and compared to Alexander, her childhood was much simpler and happier.

Purple said nothing and leaned her head gently against Alexander’s shoulder.

The cold wind blew, the ashes from the burning rustled and crumbled in the wind, and the remaining sparks flickered weakly.

Alexander said, “You didn’t experience those days, so you probably don’t understand. When Meredith Richards came to seek refuge, Old Master Summers was already critically ill. My mother had to take care of Old Master Summers and the heartbroken Meredith; she was overwhelmed. Janelle knew the old master was dying and came back especially to fight for the inheritance. It was a mess, and just at that time, Meredith committed suicide.

Yes, I know she had depression and deserved sympathy, but people are selfish. Meredith found her escape through suicide, but what about my mom? She had to deal with the aftermath, raise her child, and live with guilt and regret for her death for the rest of her life!”
