Chapter 817: Chapter 817 Missing_1
As she spoke, her gaze slightly lifted and fell on Purple Summers’s hair bun, expressing with some astonishment, “Huh? You’re also wearing white on your head?”
The atmosphere around the dining table instantly froze.
Wearing white on the head is akin to wearing mourning attire. Now that it was pointed out by Violet Nelson, it made Purple seem thoughtless, as if she were wishing Christopher Simonson to die.
The family head’s wife’s face immediately darkened, a hint of displeasure on it, and she even cast a reproachful look at Caitlin Carter, as if Purple’s improper attire was entirely her foster mother’s fault.
Condemning Purple just because of a piece of clothing or an accessory seemed far too far-fetched.
In fact, Violet’s intentions were not so innocent; she merely wanted to subtly stir trouble between Caitlin Carter and Purple Summers. After all, if Purple had worn the clothes prepared by Caitlin for dinner, none of these issues would have arisen.
...
Purple stopped using her chopsticks and emotionlessly lifted her head but didn’t look at Violet. Her eyes, cool and clear, landed on the men seated beside her.
They were all wearing pure white dress shirts.
If white was acceptable on others, why was it inappropriate when Purple wore it?
Purple Summers’s lips curved into a cold smile, a silent mockery.
The atmosphere turned even more awkward.
Officials from the Presidential Office dined in silence, each fully aware that Violet’s tricks had hit a wall. Without uttering a word, with just one glance, Purple had rendered her attack invisible.
Old Master Simonson’s eyes narrowed.
One was his granddaughter, just recently welcomed back into the family, and the other, a niece who had grown up by his side. The old master didn’t want to harm either’s reputation; he had always believed that educating sons and not daughters was a duty of the wife and daughters-in-law.
But it was apparent that his wife was biased toward Violet, as she remained silent at the dining table.
However, Caitlin couldn’t stand by and watch, barely managing to speak up for Purple, “The jewelry was a gift I gave to Purple. Actually, it’s not pure white, the pearls are pale pink… ”
If Violet had let the matter drop, it would have silently passed; but she, unwilling to let it go, feigned panic, “I’m really sorry, I saw the news that the Howard family head had died, and seeing you dressed all in white, I unavoidably thought too much…”
Seeing the puzzled looks on others’ faces, she continued, “You might not know, the Howard family head pursued Purple Summers, and the two seemed to be boyfriend and girlfriend.”
Purple’s fingers tightened around her chopsticks, the knuckles turning white.
The others looked at her in astonishment, some even with shock.
—Calling her a girlfriend was essentially labeling her as Roy Howard’s woman, or, to put it more crudely, Roy Howard’s affair partner.
For someone her young age to become the lover of a man of power and wealth would only make people think she was vain and didn’t know how to keep herself pure.
Moreover, Roy Howard was already dead! As the victor is king and the loser is the bandit, a woman who had been with a failure, in the eyes of the public, could not be noble.
The family head’s wife’s face had turned ashen, and Old Master Simonson’s expression was equally displeased.
So this was what she had been waiting for…
Purple finally understood that Violet’s earlier feigned ignorance was intentional, designed to expose the relationship between herself and Roy Howard.
Violet looked innocently at Purple and said, “Did I say something wrong? Don’t be mad, friends often tell me I’m silly and naive, outspoken because I speak my mind. If I’ve upset you, I apologize.”
“How old are you?” Purple asked her.
Violet was taken aback.
Purple continued, “You’re twenty years old and still pretend to be as naive as a three-year-old; doesn’t that disgust you? Any normal adult knows how to read the room. You grew up in the Presidential Palace, yet you haven’t learned to be discreet. Instead, you’re telling me you’re silly and naive? Quick to speak your mind?
Being outspoken only comes in two varieties; one lacks intelligence, the other lacks manners, caring only for one’s own pleasure without considering others’ feelings. Ms. Nelson, I neither see your intelligence nor your manners.”
What do you think?
