Fragments of Dawn

Chapter 8: The Shifting Path

The figure’s hand crashed down like a falling mountain, its massive form shuddering the earth beneath them as if the city were trembling in response. Kai’s heart pounded in his chest, a rush of adrenaline surging through his veins. He had felt danger before—every time they’d narrowly escaped disaster, every time the fragments surged with power—but this was something entirely different. The creature in front of them wasn’t just a physical threat; it was an existential one, a force of nature that seemed to warp reality itself.

Ava was already moving, her sidearm raised, the barrel tracking the figure’s movements. But Kai’s mind raced faster than his body could respond. He didn’t have time for strategy, for careful calculation. This was pure instinct. The power of his fragment surged violently within him, pressing against his chest like a storm ready to break free.

“Move!” Kai shouted, grabbing Ava by the arm and pulling her back. They barely avoided the creature’s strike, which left a massive crater in the street where they’d just been standing.

The force of the blow sent a shockwave through the city, shaking the ground beneath their feet. Kai’s knees buckled for a moment as the world around them seemed to spin. He struggled to maintain his balance, his hands gripping the crumbling concrete of a nearby building.

“Focus!” Ava yelled, pulling him back to his feet. She wasn’t afraid. She was always in control, no matter the situation. But even she couldn’t mask the dread that had slipped into her eyes.

“What the hell is that thing?” Kai gasped, struggling to catch his breath. His mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. The fragment inside him was humming erratically, responding to the creature’s presence, but Kai wasn’t sure how to tap into that power. The time distortion, his Temporal Shatter, wasn’t going to cut it here. This enemy was different.

“I don’t know,” Ava said, her gaze fixed on the towering figure. The ground where it had struck was already beginning to heal, the earth shifting and re-forming as if the city itself were trying to obey the creature’s will. “But we need to move. Now.”

Kai nodded, his pulse pounding in his ears. They couldn’t run. Not yet. The thing was too fast, too powerful. They needed to fight back. He needed to understand it—to figure out what made it tick.

But before he could say anything, the creature spoke again, its voice reverberating through the air, deep and booming like the rumbling of an ancient earthquake.

“Flee if you must, but it will change nothing,” the figure said, its eyes glowing with an eerie, unnatural light. “You are merely delaying the inevitable.”

Kai’s stomach churned as the words echoed in his mind. The power of the fragments was alive, pulsing in the air around them, but there was something wrong about it—something distorted. This wasn’t the same energy he had tapped into before. This wasn’t the fragmented power of a shattered moon. This was something far darker.

Ava’s voice broke through his thoughts. “Kai, it’s not just a monster—it’s a force. It’s like it belongs here, like it’s part of the city itself. We can’t fight it the way we’ve fought everything else. We need to think.”

Kai’s mind raced, trying to make sense of it. His fragment had granted him the ability to manipulate time, but he couldn’t just rewind or accelerate the future with this—this thing in front of them. It wasn’t like anything he had faced before. Its movements weren’t bound by time. They were... organic, yet mechanical at once.

“We don’t have time to think!” Kai spat, already feeling the desperation building in his chest. “We need to get away from it.”

Before they could make a move, the creature lurched forward again, its massive foot crashing down, sending dust and debris flying in every direction. The sheer force of its presence was enough to knock them both off their feet, sending them sprawling to the ground. The world around them seemed to bend and twist, the air thick with energy.

As they struggled to regain their footing, the creature’s voice filled the air again, low and melodic, yet chilling in its tone.

“The power you seek belongs to us all. To the fragments.”

A surge of realization hit Kai like a jolt of electricity. The creature wasn’t just after them—it was after the fragments. It was connected to them, somehow. But how? What was this thing, and why did it want the fragments?@@novelbin@@

“Do you think the power of time will save you?” the figure continued, its glowing eyes locked onto Kai. “You are but a speck of dust in the grand design. The fragments are merely tools, and you are not their master.”

Ava pulled Kai back, her expression grim. “Kai, this is no ordinary threat. This thing is tied to the fragments—maybe even to the moon itself.”

Kai’s chest tightened as the weight of her words hit him. Was this thing a remnant of whatever had caused the moon’s destruction? A guardian of the fragments? An enemy that had been waiting in the shadows all along?

The ground beneath them began to crack again, and the creature shifted, its body reforming with terrifying speed. It was like the earth itself was merging with its form, creating something even more massive, more unstoppable. The world around them was warping, bending in ways that defied physics.

“We need to leave,” Kai said, his voice steady even though his mind was in chaos. “We have to find shelter. We need to regroup.”

But as they turned to flee, the creature spoke again, its voice no longer distant. It was right in their ears, a breathless hiss that sent a shiver down their spines.

“Do not run, Kai Voss. You will be the one to lead us to the fragments. You will bring us the power.”

Kai’s pulse quickened. He turned toward Ava, his eyes wide. “It’s talking about the fragments. It knows about them.”

Ava gritted her teeth, her hand instinctively reaching for her sidearm. “Then let’s make sure it doesn’t get what it wants.”

The creature’s form shifted again, this time splitting into multiple tendrils of solid stone and metal. They shot toward Kai and Ava, moving with a speed that defied logic. Kai reacted without thinking, activating Temporal Shatter as the tendrils closed in on them.

Time fractured around them as the world slowed to a crawl, but the tendrils were relentless, their forms shifting through the time distortion, unaffected by Kai’s manipulation. In a panic, Kai reached deeper, pushing the limits of his ability. The air crackled with energy as he struggled to maintain control.

“I can’t hold it!” Kai gasped, the strain of manipulating time at such an intensity causing his vision to blur. The energy within him was unraveling. If he kept pushing, there would be consequences—irreversible consequences.

Ava’s voice cut through the haze of panic. “Kai, stop! You’re going too far!”

But it was too late. The power of the fragment surged beyond his control, and the world around him shattered. Time didn’t just slow—it splintered, twisting in ways that felt unnatural. Kai felt himself falling, the very fabric of reality bending and warping around him.

The tendrils surged forward, slipping through the fractured gaps in time, and before he could react, they wrapped around him, pulling him into the air, their stone-like forms tightening with a bone-crushing grip.

And then, in the split second before the world collapsed completely, Kai’s thoughts reached out to Ava. She had to survive this.

The last thing he heard was the creature’s voice, whispering through the broken fragments of time.

“You will bring the fragments to me, Kai Voss.”

And everything went black.
