Carrying a thermos, the man placed it on the bedside table, glanced over at Aubree with a frown: “The doctor told you to rest well. Reading would strain your eyes.”

Aubree laughed and responded: “There’s nothing else to do, it’s just to pass the time.”

Agave Rinto took the book from her hands and opened the thermos: “Have some fresh clam porridge while it’s still hot.”

Earlier that morning, he arranged for an ivory clam to be flown in via a helicopter to make sure that Aubree could enjoy the freshest ingredients.

Dallyn sniffed the air: “Smells so good, so good…”

Aubree laughed and said: “I can’t finish this alone, Dallyn, you should have some too.”

Dallyn instinctually glanced at Agave Rinto, visibly shrank back a little and refused: “No no, you go on, Miss. I’m good with my apple.”

“We mustn’t waste food, so eat with me.” Aubree’s tone was gentle but firm.

Agave Rinto cleared his throat. “Listen to the Mistress.”

Dallyn immediately ran over, served herself a bowl, took a deep breath and said: “Uncle Collins’ culinary skills are the absolute best. I get anxious whenever I go a day without his food.”

Uncle Collins was the Rintos’ master chef, descended from a line of imperial chefs.

After finishing their meal, feeling a bit bored, Dallyn suggested a game of Landlord, as there were exactly three of them, which was perfect for the game.

Aubree didn’t object.

Dallyn took a sneak peek at Agave Rinto.

Agave Rinto nodded his agreement: “Alright, but just three rounds. Aubree needs to rest afterwards.”@@novelbin@@
