Chapter 679: Battle of White Island 665
Bai Zhongqi, who was gradually becoming the spiritual mentor of the resistance, was assassinated by a Qikun assassin during a lecture, causing an uproar throughout the nation. Of course, what many people found even more astonishing was that Bai Zhongqi was actually a powerful superhuman. Although there have been many reports and legends about superhumans throughout history, most superhumans have been relatively low-key, with none standing in the limelight. People often heard that a certain historical general was a superhuman, or that a king had a superhuman by his side, but there was no superhuman who attracted as much attention as Bai Zhongqi did.
Moreover, Bai Zhongqi alone held off fifteen Qikun assassins, which made the outside world increasingly mystified about his strength.
Some said Bai Zhongqi could rip tigers and leopards apart with his bare hands, others said he could control the weather, and there were those who claimed he could single-handedly sink the four islands of Qikun.
In the midst of all these confusing messages, Zhang Shixiong, who had been the main character of the resistance movement, personally led the Qing State army and launched the battle of White Island.
White Island was the largest city in Qing State and an important northern port. By using threats and enticements, the Qikun Nation turned White Island into their concession; one-third of White Island's urban area was the base of the Qikuns, with their fleets, thousands of Navy Marine Corps members, and over one hundred thousand Qikun immigrants. The Eastern Landers living in other parts of White Island were mostly workers in factories set up by Qikun capital. In Qikun, the Eastern Land was not permitted to station troops there.
That day, however, the situation finally changed.
Bai Zhongqi had previously coordinated with White Island locals opposed to Qikun to spread propaganda in Hua sector, proclaiming that the Qing State army would soon attack the city, and to prevent unnecessary casualties, the citizens of White Island should temporarily seek refuge. This prompted over a million White Island inhabitants to leave the city, fleeing westward with their families.
But soon, the Qikun Navy Marine Corps realized that something was amiss and immediately crossed the boundary into the Hua sector to stop the locals from leaving, ostensibly to conduct safety inspections but in reality holding the locals hostage.
Pushed by the National Salvation Revival Association, the media began to vigorously condemn the despicable acts of the Qikuns, and this situation even caught the attention of some major power's media. Although Qikun was the world's third-strongest nation, it had always been looked down upon by white countries, and at this time, they mocked the Qikuns for lacking humanitarian spirit. Of course, they would not bother themselves with intervening in this matter.
Zhang Shixiong, who was "leading his troops in person," could be said to be spirited and proud. Recently, despite being in the eye of the storm, he had garnered much praise domestically, with even the intellectual community that had previously mocked him giving him a nod of approval. Many talented individuals began to join the Qing State military, not to mention that Bai Zhongqi had elevated his one hundred thousand-strong army to a level beyond imagination.
The capability of his Qing State army officer system was actually not great, with few truly talented commanders; however, now that he had sufficiently powerful armaments, even if victory had to be piled up with artillery shells, he could achieve it.
Without Bai Zhongqi's guidance, Zhang Shixiong now knew just how useful his 500-plus J-20 stealth fighters were. The Azure Planet's version of the J-20 was so multipurpose that it could put any Old Earth era fighter to shame—not only did it have traditional fighter functions like air superiority and stealthy ingress, but the stealth fighter that Bai Zhongqi brought also had the capability for extended-reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and even antisubmarine roles.
The J-20, loaded with 16 exquisitely crafted bombs in its bomb bay, became an excellent aerial bombardment tool for the Qing State army. Even without bombers, the J-20's ground attack capability was already more effective than any bomber.
Zhang Shixiong knew the Qikun garrison facilities on White Island like the back of his hand. He inputted the attack targets into the fighter squadron, and then these drones autonomously took off to begin their combat missions.
Thanks to their excellent stealth capabilities, these fighter jets approached White Island without even being detected by the radars of the Qikun garrison stationed there. By the time the combat aircraft dropped their guided bombs with a range of about 20-60 kilometers, it was already too late.
Without Bai Zhongqi's command, Zhang Shixiong's advance operation still encountered some disorganization.
Due to the J-20 strike squadrons' effective initial attack, which left the Qikun garrison stunned and even sunk several Qikun destroyers in the harbor of White Island, Zhang Shixiong, who hadn't reacted in time, failed to push his troops far enough forward to take advantage of the chaos.
However, by the time his troops reached the designated position, the Qikun had regained a degree of organization from the bombing. This exposed another mistake on the part of the warlord leader: he had enough fighter jets and bombs, but he had not formed a truly continuous bombing campaign that would have kept the enemy under relentless pressure.
Nevertheless, Zhang Shixiong, who was experienced in battle, promptly brought out the artillery upon reaching White Island and heavily bombarded the Qikun concession and military facilities, once again disorganizing the Qikun forces with suppressive firepower.
Regrettably, that was one of only two highlights in this battle for him.
Zhang Shixiong then ordered the Qing State troops to storm into the Qikun concession without assessing the remaining enemy numbers, leading to intense urban fighting with the resilient Qikun irregular forces.
The Qikun Navy, not entirely neutralized, began shelling from the sea upon escaping the harbor, even destroying some of Zhang Shixiong's prized self-propelled artillery. An enraged Zhang Shixiong immediately mustered the firepower of his artillery and air force, sinking all the Qikun warships, including two amphibious assault ships.
In Bai Zhongqi's view, the two-day battle was a success in recapturing White Island, but it was not fought elegantly. The Qing State army suffered over 700 casualties and lost more than twenty armored vehicles.
The underlying issue was the Qing State army's unfamiliarity with new combat methods and Zhang Shixiong's lack of understanding on how to wield such formidable military power.
Yet, dissatisfaction was limited to Bai Zhongqi alone; the rest of the country sung praises. Apart from the Wei County battle that failed to stir any controversy, the Battle of White Island marked the first time the Eastern Land armed forces decisively defeated the Qikun military in the full view of the nation. In this battle, the Qikun Navy and Marine Corps suffered over ten thousand casualties, and an entire division was completely sunk, with a city that had been forcibly annexed for decades returning to the control of the Eastern Land.
Of course, the impact of this battle was not confined to the Eastern Land; the entire world seemed to be shocked by the sudden display of combat power by the Qing State forces. Even nations such as the Wind Alliance, Yig and Bayer, didn't believe they could easily defeat the Qikun military in White Island, yet the Qing State army did just that.
As more news photos were released, people saw tanks and self-propelled artillery they had never seen before, and they saw the Qing State army donning what were actually PLA Type 17 uniforms. Everyone was astonished and wondered what exactly had happened in Qing State.
What do you think?
