Chapter 475
Chapter 475
As they make their way into the meeting room Ajax, Lexi and Xavier recognise all of the younger participants. While they aren’t all that well acquainted with all of them they do know them as most of them were their seniors in the Academy.
Despite not knowing exactly what sort of opportunity they were there for, nobody is surprised to see Ajax and Lexi enter the room behind Xavier and his father. Despite some noble’s views on the royal family's attitude towards Ajax’s meteoric rise, none object to their investment in him as a powerhouse of the kingdom.
“Thank you for coming.” The crown prince greeted everyone. “As all of you have been informed you have been invited here to take advantage of an opportunity. I will now be explaining the details of that opportunity.”
Benedict, Lexi, Anna, Xavier and Ajax already knew the details but everyone else was listening intently as the prince described what they intended to do. The explanation caused a few of the people present to gape in Ajax’s direction when they heard he managed to single handedly take out a floor boss twice his level.
“Can I ask what the selection criteria was for this?” one of the older representatives asked as he took in the gathered youth, who they were made no sense regardless of how the man looked at it.
“The successful completion of the requirement for the Achievement.” the crown prince replied.
“I thought you said Ajax would be killing the creature by himself following the opening attack.” Another pointed out.
“I’m sorry if this comes across as rude but Ajax killing the creature is not the biggest question in this attempt.” The crown prince’s voice was merciless as it cut into the pride of the nobles. “ As we are all aware, certain floor bosses have certain effects on the environment or extremely large areas of attack. The opening attack of the fight will already severely drain both the mana and stamina of the participants, you have all been selected because of your high Endurance and Vitality builds.”
At the mention of high Endurance and Vitality both Anna and Lexi were questionable choices yet nobody dared to raise the question, not simply because of their status but also because of the high number of dungeon floors both of them had cleared and the absurd amount of stats that came with it.
“Before any of you accept, I do want to make sure that you understand what you are giving up.” Ajax said once the crown prince fell silent . “I will be looking to confirm that the Achievement can be obtained through a technicality, regardless of what floor boss we end up getting.”“How is that a cost?” one of the more rash young nobles asked.
“Because the achievement can only be earned once.” Ajax explained. “It could very well be that the boon the floor boss variant we find gives is not ideal for you. In consideration for this you are given this opportunity free of charge.”
In truth Ajax was hoping that the floor boss would be perfect for a caster. Both Anna, Lexi and Xavier would be in a position to take advantage of such a variant and with Benedict's recent interest in elven warrior styles he would also be better suited to adapting to them.

“What do you mean free of charge?” One of the older nobles, one here to oversee the interest of their House and look after the young scion invited, asked clearly upset at the implication, and not unsure of what Ajax meant.
“Should we confirm that the Achievement is obtainable in this method I of course plan to be well rewarded for the time invested in any further attempts.” Ajax said.
One of the things Ajax was actually planning was to ask Lexi and Anna to not participate if the floor boss variant was particularly unfavorable for casters. It wasn’t like this would be their only chance, they would only need to ask and Ajax would be willing to take them with him a few times to ensure his fiance and her best friend had a perfect boon.
One thing the prince hadn’t mentioned was that the scions selected were also being chosen based on the wealth of their family, this way they would be more likely to accept any boon rather than hope to pay for a chance at a better one later on.
There was a lot of grumbling and outrage at Ajax’s words. Yet all of it fell on deaf ears, the crown prince even went as far as chastising the nobles for trying to impose themselves on a Duke, especially one whose time was so precious.
In the end all of the people invited accepted the conditions, they all knew their Houses simply didn’t have the finances necessary to delay getting the Achievement until later, more than that the monetary value of the boon would make the young scions into a possible revenue stream for their House from a much earlier point with the guarantee of being able to take with them the body of one monster on the last floor of any dungeon before they leave.
Once everyone accepted, almost everyone who was invited was succinctly escorted from the palace after they were told to prepare themselves for the delve and that they were to return to the palace tomorrow morning before they would all be going to the dungeon as a team. They were also warned that they were not to share anything about this until after delve.
“I hope I can convince both of you to wait if the floor boss we face tomorrow is something like a werewolf.” Ajax turned towards Anna and Lexi.
Benedict and Xavier didn’t have the same issues as they were both heading more or less towards a more hybrid fighting style that would benefit from pretty much any combat boon.
“We’ll see what we face tomorrow.” Lexi cleverly postponed the conversation without agreeing to anything, something Ajax saw through after all the lessons from his grandfather but he wasn’t willing to push the point.
“Have you considered how you are going to sell this if it works?” the crown prince asked Ajax, after all that would be a decision that would affect the entire kingdom.
“I plan to auction off the spots for any delves I would be a part of regardless.” Ajax said. “At my current level I will be delving around level one hundred and twenty to one hundred and thirty with a competent team. For my first few delves we can forgo the usual crafters that would be accompanying me on account of my ability to be more selective with the floors we encounter and take a group of ten to fifteen for the floor boss.”
“Ten to fifteen?” Xavier asked, knowing that the ettin’s staff was capped at ten people.
“Well, I’ll be selling the spots with a right of refusal.” Ajax explained and from the proud look in Anna’s eyes he could tell his thinking was correct from an economical point of view at least. “Everyone will be given a choice on if they want to take part, if they think the floor boss would have a good boon for them. If less than ten people want to join then those people can get the Achievement, but if more than ten people want it then it would go to the top ten people in regards to the spot they paid for.”
“That’s genius.” Anna looked both impressed and proud at Ajax’s business sense. Something he couldn’t take full credit for as while he did come up with the sale of ten spots by himself, both his grandfather and Alana had helped him finalize how he would go about selling access to the Achievement in such a way that he maximizes both profits and the amount of people getting stronger. “I hope you aren’t planning on becoming the next Archduke Goldmancer.” while Anna was mostly teasing him there was a small undercurrent of truth behind the words as Ajax truly was gaining more and more revenue streams, so much so that in a few decades he could be in a position to contest for the title of Goldmancer in terms of pure wealth, even if he would have a ways to go in terms of market access.
“I’ll have plenty of other things to do.” Ajax reassured her. “From what I heard, Brightstone's ambassador has been hoping to talk to me for a while now. I’d much rather be focused on getting access to their dungeons rather than creating more work for myself by becoming an Archduke.”
It was Luna who had told Ajax about the ambassador. The man in question was trying to spread the word in hopes that it would reach Ajax before he left the capital. “I imagine he very much does not want to end up like his counterpart from the Republic.” the crown prince said with an evil smirk. “The dwarves were not pleased to hear they passed on the opportunity of joining your little delving spree.”
The prince then went on to inform them all that Brightstone had been interested in an exchange of delves with Gryndor and that all of them would have an opportunity in the coming years to travel and delve those dungeons as well.
What do you think?
