Chapter 26: The True Mystical Night Market!
What does it feel like to have a pillow handed to you when you’re just about to fall asleep?
It feels fantastic!
Even before he had to come up with an excuse, the other party had already prepared one for him—and they did so respectfully, even inviting him to participate!
Just look at their choice of words: grace your presence!
That’s how a subordinate speaks to a superior. Even this minor gatekeeper speaks with such sophistication—what a promising future ahead of him!
Lu Yu was in high spirits, though with his mask concealing his face, no one could detect his change in mood. To onlookers, this enigmatic powerhouse’s mere silence radiated an overwhelming sense of pressure.
In reality, Lu Yu hadn’t released any energy waves at all. Apart from using his skills and manipulating some shadow energy, there wasn’t much he could do!
Release oppressive energy?
Well, first hand me the instruction manual!
“How terrifying! Did I say something wrong?”
The gatekeeper’s legs began trembling uncontrollably. His mind raced, trying to recall if he had misspoken, causing this powerhouse to lapse into silence.
After all, the individual before him was likely of Morning Star calibre. If such a figure were to become angry, the first to act would undoubtedly be his boss, who’d probably eliminate the gatekeeper’s entire family to apologise.
Beads of sweat as large as beans began forming on the gatekeeper’s forehead. Time seemed to slow down, each moment dragging as though it lasted a year.
“Alright,” Lu Yu finally replied.
To the gatekeeper, Lu Yu’s response was like heavenly music, making him nearly leap with joy.
Suppressing his ecstatic urge to act recklessly, he responded with an enthusiastic tone:
“Sir, please follow me!”
Lu Yu gave a slight nod and followed the gatekeeper’s lead. Under the awestruck gaze of everyone present, he stepped through the grand gate.
Beyond the gate was not the imagined array of buildings, but a bamboo forest. A narrow cobblestone path ran through it, lined with small wooden stakes, each topped with a burning candle.
Without revealing his thoughts, Lu Yu silently followed the gatekeeper through the bamboo forest and soon emerged into a vast clearing.
The area was already bustling with masked individuals. In some sections, people had spread cloths on the ground, displaying items for sale with marked prices.
Upon Lu Yu’s arrival, many gazes briefly rested on him before quickly shifting away.
No matter the setting, staring at someone for too long is considered impolite. In the world of the Awakened, where strength reigns supreme, it is even more so.
Staring or scrutinising someone, unless you are stronger, is often taken as a challenge.
Whether their gazes truly shifted away, only the observers themselves knew.
After leading Lu Yu in, the gatekeeper respectfully retreated. However, instead of returning to the entrance, he headed further into the courtyard—likely to report this to his superiors.
Lu Yu paid no mind to the gatekeeper’s departure. His primary goal was to purchase the items and information he needed from the night market.
Thus, he began to wander, quickly realising that while the market wasn’t large, the items on display were quite rare.@@novelbin@@
Most of these goods were impossible to find elsewhere.
For example, there was a metre-long white fang. At first, Lu Yu assumed it was ivory, but the label read: Wild Boar’s Fang.
Given the proportions, the creature it came from must have been six or seven metres in length. That boar must have grown on steroids!
Nearby, there was a black stone. Lu Yu thought it might be a rare gem, but the label identified it as Three-Headed Vulture Droppings and noted its use in concocting…
Lu Yu’s mouth twitched as he quickly moved on, fearing that lingering here any longer would completely shatter his worldview.
His dramatic, shadow-cloaked appearance only added to his mystique, prompting many to step aside to make way for him.
This response left Lu Yu feeling both helpless and secretly pleased.
On one hand, it meant he couldn’t easily engage with other Awakened individuals, as his limited knowledge of their world would risk exposing his inexperience.
On the other hand, it was immensely satisfying to see these people—so revered by ordinary humans—making way for him. The feeling of being the centre of attention was intoxicating!
This night market was genuinely valuable. Lu Yu saw many items that could only belong in a truly extraordinary world.
However, he hadn’t forgotten his purpose. Soon, he arrived at a stall run by a black-haired girl wearing a small cat mask. She was engrossed in reading a book.
When Lu Yu approached, she briefly glanced up before returning to her book, showing no interest in selling her wares. She looked less like an Awakened individual and more like a librarian.
The stall’s items were sparse—a dozen notebooks with neatly written titles like:
- Basic Knowledge for the Awakened
- 108 Ways to Die in Dangerous Situations
- Survival Techniques in the Wild 2.0
- Spiritual Cultivation Tips for the Awakened
Next to the books was a small white porcelain bottle labelled Five-Burial Corpse Poison.
Although the titles sounded like they came straight out of a tabloid, Lu Yu was intrigued by Spiritual Cultivation Tips for the Awakened.
Currently, while his energy was abundant, he lacked a systematic method for cultivation and strengthening himself. This book, along with Basic Knowledge for the Awakened, could fill that gap.
For other Awakened individuals, these might just be basic manuals, but for Lu Yu, they were treasures!
Still, he needed to maintain the persona of a mysterious powerhouse and couldn’t show his eagerness.
Clearing his throat, Lu Yu pointed at the porcelain bottle and asked, “Five-Burial Corpse Poison?”
What do you think?
