Chapter 644: Misunderstanding
Chapter 644: Misunderstanding
All the graduate students present in the common room were first taken aback by what Qamara had just said. Then, they burst into hushed conversations.
Some men gazed at Adam with jealousy, while others glared at him. Meanwhile, the women in the room began gossiping with one another all the while giving knowing looks to the man and the elf.
Adam, despite all the life experiences from the memories and the illusion, couldn't help but feel uncomfortable at how things were unfolding. He cleared his throat and spoke in a voice that was just enough for everyone to hear, "Magus Feno, please don't slander me―"
"Slander?!" Qamara was enraged. "You really believe you asking me out ruins your reputation?! Adam Constantine, you are too full of yourself!"
Adam shot up from his seat and argued, "Don't spew lies, please! I did not ask you out!" "You!" Qamara glared at him. She took a few steps toward the raven-haired youth and spat through gritted teeth, "Then why is my Aunt telling me to go to the ball with you?"
"Uhm..." Adam was rendered momentarily speechless. He then awkwardly added as he took a step back from the elf. "That's a misunderstanding. It's not how you think-"
Once again, the elf interrupted him as she took yet another step toward him. "Then explain yourself!"
This mad woman! Why does she keep invading my private space? Adam thought to himself incredulously.
He noticed that all the students gathered in the common room were now aptly paying attention to them, waiting for a great drama to unfold.
Tsk, how annoying! He grumbled inwardly.
He then looked right into the elf's eyes and stated, "Let's talk elsewhere." Then, without waiting for her response, he left the East Wing's common room and started descending the stairs.
The elf could only follow after him, leaving behind an amused crowd.
...
Adam walked through the grand corridors of the castle with his hands clasped behind his back. The path was lit by gas lamps attached to walls on both sides, illuminating the occasional paintings and sculptures along the way.
Qamara Feno walked beside him with a dark expression on her face. She continued to stare daggers at the man beside her, waiting for him to give an explanation.
When her aunt, Enzana Feno, told her that she wanted her to go to a masquerade ball with a special friend of hers, she was initially shocked. When she found that this 'special friend' of hers was none other than her classmate, Adam, she was greatly annoyed.
She knew him to be a very laidback student in class, but she also believed that he had deep knowledge of the School of Summoning based on his participation in class.
However, none of that mattered to her because she had never come to acknowledge him. The main reason for this was that Adam was of a different species than her.
Qamara was someone who prided herself on being an elf. Moreover, she was also the daughter of the patriarch of the Feno Family, Nylian Feno, who was one of the seven councilors of Ravenfell.
Thus, she couldn't accept the fact that she, who belonged to a Duke Family in Ravenfell, was being asked by her dear Aunt to go out with someone who was not only a human but also a foreigner.
Her aunt, Enzana, wouldn't explain the reason to her for this sudden proposal. So Qamara had no other way but to ask the person directly responsible for this.
"Are you even going to talk?" The elf was at her wits' end after seeing Adam not utter a word since they left the common room.@@novelbin@@
"What's there to talk about?" Adam asked casually. "There's a formal event taking place in a few days and I want you to attend that event with me."
Qamara was flabergasted. "You want me to attend that event with you? And I'm just going to? You're quite cocky, aren't you? Just because you're friends with me aunt, you think I'm going to the ball with you? I refuse!"
Adam stopped in his tracks, turned, and glanced at the haughty elf with a helpless sigh. "What do you want in return? A Rank 2 spell? Notes on arcane theory? Just name it."
Hearing his words, Qamara felt greatly insulted, "Do you think you can buy your way into this? Just what do you think of yourself? I don't know what deal you had with my aunt but I'm not having it." With that said, she turned around and left.
Damn it, why are women so difficult to deal with? Adam thought to himself in frustration. The worst part is I'm not even trying to get her attention!
He ran after her in the corridor. "Qamara, wait!" Then, he stood right in front of her and spoke apologetically, "Look, I didn't mean it like that. Please, just allow me to explain."
Qamara looked at him with narrowed eyes. Still, she stopped and chose to listen to what he had to say. After all, her Aunt held him in high regard for some reason.
Adam displayed a faint smile and he spoke, "You see, I don't know many people in this castle. Almost all my acquaintances are in the Department of the School of Summoning, and out of all the girls in this department, you're the prettiest-"
"You dare to flirt with me!" The elf was enraged as she walked away once again. "Don't you ever try to talk to me again. Just who do you think you are? Ridiculous!"
Adam was left in a dumbfounded state. He thought women loved being praised, so then why was this elf having the complete opposite reaction to what he was expecting? He was utterly
clueless.
He once again ran after the elf and stopped her in her tracks, explaining himself, "Look, the truth is I really wish to attend the ball at Viscount Duskfall's estate. Daneli even went so far as to acquire an invitation for me, so I don't want to let him—"
Once again, Qamara interrupted him but this time it wasn't out of frustration or anger. "Daneli... is going to be there?"
Adam looked at her strangely. Then, it suddenly dawned on him. Of course! I should have just used that pretty bastard's name in the first place.
"That's right." He nodded with a slightly regretful look on his face. "Daneli and I had planned to attend this event together initially, but later we found out that it's a couple-only event." "Daneli has already found a partner to attend the event with?" Qamara asked in a low voice, trying her best to mask her expression. But naturally, she couldn't hide it from Adam.
The raven-haired youth hid the devious smirk that was about to form on his lips. "That's right. His partner's also an elf, but she's not a local. She's our mutual friend from the south of the Empire.
"Anyways, I thought if you could come with me, all four of us would be able to enjoy the ball together. But it seems like you don't wish to attend. It's understandable, though. Sigh, I
apologize for taking your time."
With that said, he turned around and slowly started to walk away. Qamara watched him leave with a complicated look on her face. Her lips opened and closed several times, but she was unable to come to a decision.
Just when Adam was about to turn a corner and disappear from the elf's sight, she called out
to him. "Wait!"
Adam's lips curled into a smirk.
Heh!
What do you think?
