Chapter 658: A Bitter Smile

'Pretend like everything's normal,' Adam mentally transmitted to the elf, interrupting her. He then skillfully guided her, dancing to the tune of the live band, fully immersing in the music along with the rest of the people.

He really did use my hand to execute the physical component of the spell… Qamara thought to herself in a daze. Before this, she could never imagine such a thing to be possible.

He then added in a self-deprecating tone, 'But that's when my true misfortunes began. I thought the threat of the Umbra Thieves was over, but I couldn't be more wrong.'

'It all started with the attempted assassination of Brigham Flynn, the patriarch of the Flynn Family,' Adam began in a somber mood.

Qamara aptly listened to Adam's story. Of course, she knew that there was an assassination attempt on Brigham Flynn many years ago as well as the ongoing war between the Flynn Family and the Umbra Thieves.

Her sudden burst of emotions caught the attention of a few people standing nearby. They looked at the pair in amusement, ready to witness a drama unfold between the couple.

Her hand squeezed Adam's hand lightly and she gestured for him to continue.

What Qamara didn't know was that Adam was the one who saved Brigham Flynn from being eventually murdered.

Qamara's heart was filled with complicated emotions. She could feel the deep sadness, regret, and bitterness in Adam's voice that echoed directly inside her head. It was contagious and soon she too couldn't help but start to resonate with his emotions.

'Since the Umbra Thieves came to know that I was the one to thwart thier plans, they've sent people after me time and time again in order to kill me,' said Adam in a tone filled with sorrow and indignation.

Sensing the seriousness in his voice, Qamara imperceptibly nodded her head and followed his lead.

Adam's eyes were deep and profound. They seemed to contain infinite mysteries in them, yet at the moment they were filled with grief and sorrow.

Qamara's heart started to beat faster. She was close enough to catch the scent of Adam's cologne. She couldn't help but involuntarily gulp when she felt an unfamiliar feeling bubble up deep inside her heart.

Adam stopped somewhere near the center of the dance floor. He turned around and stepped closer to Qamara. Then he placed his right hand around her waist, pulling her closer, and stretched his left hand a little sideways, beckoning to her to place her hand on his.

Adam scanned his surroundings and was relieved to find that only a handful of people had overheard Qamara just now. He then looked at the elf and solemnly said, "Come with me."

Adam's lips curled up into a bitter smile, a mocking smile. 'I was foolish to think that the Umbra Thieves would leave me alone. Foolish, oh, so foolish of me, Qamara. Little did I know, they had secretly allied with a noble family of Ravenfell to bring about my doom.'

A live band consisting of a dozen professional artists played their musical instruments, bathing the manor in an uplifting mood. It was the perfect vibe for all the guests at the event to dance and enjoy themselves.

This matter had stirred quite the storm in Ravenfell a few years ago as the Flynn Family started waging war on all the members of the thieves' guild operating in the city. Everyone in the city practically knew about this conflict.@@novelbin@@

He then grabbed her hand and led her to the expansive main area of the first floor that served as the dance floor.

Her breathing turned a little ragged as she found it difficult to look into the eyes of the man holding her. Finally, she gathered the courage to meet eyes with him, but when she did, she was startled.

But his voice… she thought as she gazed at Adam hold her hand and lead her past the other couples toward the center of the dance floor. He sounds so desperate… and heartbroken.

"What… did you say?" She asked in disbelief. Suddenly, she was overcome by rage and she couldn't help but blurt out. "Adam, you're lying to me! You keep lying to me over and over again. I don't trust a word you say!"

This… It can't be, she thought to herself in disbelief.

Qamara's body involuntarily shuddered when she heard Adam speak those words. She looked deep into his eyes, remaining silent for a few moments.

For a moment, she forgot about how she snapped at Adam a few moments ago. Her body seemed to move on its own and she found her left hand gently resting on the back of Adam's neck and her right hand holding onto his left.

'I am here to seek revenge!'

His eyes flashed with fury and he continued, 'This accursed family murdered my brother in cold blood. They murdered Daneli, oh, they murdered him! And I…

The very next moment, Adam's voice rang inside her head, 'Qamara, please! You must give me a chance to explain myself. I am being framed! Please, just… give me a chance, will you?'

'Things had escalated to such a degree that I didn't even step foot out of Ravenfell for years, fearing that I would be assassinated.'

'The thieves' guild known as the Umbra Thieves planned to assassinate him for reasons unknown. Their plan was almost successful, that was until I came into the whole scenario.

'I was able to cure Lord Flynn with an antidote I brewed. But in doing so, I was pulled into the wave of misfortunes that was the feud between the Flynn Family and the Umbra Thieves.'

Adam's heart seemingly bled with hatred as he mentally transmitted, 'The Duskfall Family went after the person who was like a brother to me! He was my childhood friend, someone whom I trusted with all my heart.'

Qamara wanted to yank her hand out of Adam's grip but was suddenly startled when she saw him covertly using her hand to form what appeared to be hand seals!

Adam paused for a moment, his eyes turning slightly teary. He took a deep breath and continued, 'A ray of hope shined on me when the Flynn Family eradicated all the members of the Umbra Thieves from the city.'

She couldn't help but gently call out to him, "Adam, you…"

Realization started to dawn on Qamara and Adam's following words only confirmed it.
