Chapter 779: Cautious Man
Upon entering the cave, Adam was reminded of the time he had to fight with the vampire spawn about twenty years ago.
That was his first major fight against a Magus. Although he had managed to defeat the spawn in the end, the true owner of the lair, the slumbering vampire had awoken.
But thanks to Blackie, he was able to come out of that situation unscathed.
That was also the first time he had seen the Blackie's true battle prowess. Now, when he thought about it, Adam felt like Blackie's strength level should be at least the Mana Vortex Rank!
Pushing these thoughts to the back of his mind, the youth walked around the edges of the underground chamber, brushing his fingers against the wall.
He had already deactivated the lotus, he had no need for it now. Also, he had promised himself that he would only use it when abolutely necessary.
For if he overused it for every little matter like he used to before, then he wouldn't be far from dying—just like in the vision the butterfly had shown him.
These runes are vastly different from the ones in the tunnel, Adam thought to himself.
He sat down cross-legged on the ground and began to diligently study these runes. Unsurprisngly, he found out that trying to decipher these runes was, in fact, helping him strengthen his own knowledge about rune magic.
Adam continued to use concealment magic spells, only deactivating them when the lair was devoid of any people.
During the daytime several professors from the Academy would arrive, trying to comprehend the mysteries that this place provided.
However, this was just a facade erected by the Cult Leader to keep these people from finding the truth.
Three more days passed until Adam finally finished studying all the runes carved in this cavernous underground chamber.
His expression was dark, to say the least. Glancing at all the parchments laid out before him on the ground, his eyebrows twisted into a knot.
These runes are not at all related to the School of Enchantment and the School of Illusion, he thought.
Instead… they are deeply related to the School of Summoning!
His expression turned extremely grave as he leaned back on the wall. He couldn't help but wonder in alarm, Just what are these cultists planning?
First, it was the runes related to enchantment and illusion in the tunnel that prevented people from finding out the true purpose of this place.
Not to mention the runes were translated into Infernac, making it near-impossible for any Magus of Tron to decipher them.
Perhaps… in this whole world, apart from the Cult Leader, only I can decode these foreign runes!
Such levels of precautions were astounding, to say the least. Adam speculated that whatever it was that the Cult was planning to do here, it was very important to them.
Adam gazed at the walls and ceiling of the vampire's lair, thinking to himself as fear gripped his heart, And these runes contain the essence of summoning magic…
Considering the Cult's history with the devils of Hell, I can't help but assume the worst.
He subconsiously gulped, continuing his train of thought, If it is as I think it is, then…
Adam didn't dare to think any further, afraid of the terrifying conclusion he would arrive at.
He rose to his feet and started pacing around. His back was drecnched in a layer of cold sweat and he couldn't help but start to panic.
Damn it! Just what are these cultists thinking? Or wait...
He stopped in his footsteps, thinking of another possibility, Could it be that most of them don't know about this? Perhaps, only the Cult Leader and his most loyal followers are privy to his plan…
I can't help but think the vast majority of the cultists would rise up in protest if they knew what their leader was truly planning.
Damn it all! Just what is that bastard thinking?!
He stopped in his footsteps and took several deep breaths, trying to calm down his wildly beating heart. He then turned towards the vampire's personal chambers where his coffin lay.
The runes around that area were the most detailed. The arrangement of the geometrical patterns there was complex and precise, acting as the stabilizer of power.
Adam knew that was the source of it all—the heart of this expansive runic formation!
He retrieved all the parchments scattered on the ground and made his way towards the vampire's personal chamber.
Soon, he arrived at the coffin that occupied the center of the room. It was still there even after all this time, completely unmoved.
While all the other items inside the chamber had been taken away, only this remained. This point alone made it very suspicious to Adam who was already on the cusp of unraveling the truth.
With bated breaths, he walked towards the obsidian coffin and pushed the lid aside with little effort.
As expected, he thought.
The runes inscribed inside the coffin are heavily detailed. This has to be the heart of the runic formation.
His eyes flashed with a bright light and he reached out to press the bottom of the coffin.
No, to be more precise… the heart of the formation lies underneath the coffin!
Just as his hand was about to push the bottom of the coffin, he suddenly paused. He then hurriedly drew his hand back.
Something's wrong, he thought.
Although he had never met the Cult Leader before, based on the man's actions, Adam knew that he was a highly cautious man.
This was evident based on the fact that the man had taken so many precautions to hide the true purpose of this place. There were multiple layers of security to conceal his plans.
What if… Adam thought to himself as he activated the white lotus again.
His pupils flashed with a brilliant white light and beautiful flower patterns surfaced on them. Now, when he cast his gaze inside the coffin, his heart turned cold.
He now found additional runes that had been concealed with the help of high-level illusion magic!
After studying these hidden runes for a few minutes, he finally understood their purpose.
The youth couldn't help but subconsiously gulp, thinking to himself, If I had pushed the bottom of the coffin just now, it would have alerted the Cult Leader!
He took a deep breath as a drop of cold sweat trickled down the side of his forehead.
His lips involuntarily formed a slight smirk and he wondered, Cult Leader… you are truly a very cautious man.
But so am I.
Now that he knew about the existence of these hidden runes, it was fairly simple for him to bypass them without alerting the one who carved these runes—the Cult Leader himself.
After another thirty minutes, he was able to circumvent the runes and finally push the bottom of the coffin.
WHOOSH!
A strong gust of wind brushed against Adam's face, causing him to be stunned.
Such strong density of mana!
He first took a look around the underground chamber and even spread his senses towards the tunnel. After ensuring that there wasn't any immediate danger, he dove inside the coffin.
The youth had made sure to keep the lotus activated in case there were other traps. He was now much more vigilant than before.
After traveling through a narrow dark tunnel that descended further underground, he finally arrived at a cavern that was about half the size of the vampire's lair above.
The moment Adam's feet touched the ground, a cold chill crawled down his spine.
He turned towards this feeling of danger, and his gaze locked on to that thing that occupied the center of the dark cavern.
Adam's heart skipped a beat as he froze in place, his entire being seized by terror.
His worst fear now stood before him…
Alive and real!
What do you think?
