"But this is still too much," the mer said as he felt a bit uncomfortable. He and his brothers did not help out much, they could only pour three to four buckets of wet sand on the fire. For such a little work, two catties of pork belly was too much. "How about this? I will tak half a catty with me and you can take the rest back with you Master Li?"

"Little Ke, we do not lack pork belly at our house. You should keep it and cook something for the children," Shen Li glanced at the small mers and girls who were hiding behind Little Ke. Even though the oldest was not even ten yet, she had already lost her mother and now relied on her daddy to raise her.

He patted the head of the oldest daughter of Little Ke and smiled before saying, "Even if you feel a bit uncomfortable about accepting it, you should think about your daughter. If it makes you feel better you can wait for the greenhouse to be rebuilt, then you can work hard for our family."

After leaving those words, Shen Li turned on his heels and walked away.

Before Little Ke thought of anything else, Shen Li had already walked away way too far.

"Master Li…" Little Ke wanted to call Shen Li back but the mer was gone leaving him with the pork belly.

His daughter who was only seven gulped with her finger between her lips before asking her daddy, "C——Can we eat this pork belly, daddy? I have never eaten it before."

Little Ke's eyes turned red when he heard the words of his daughter. His wife died when his daughter was only a few months old leaving him and their daughter to fend for themselves. Though little Ke tried to do everything for his daughter, he who was a widowed mer —— had limited time and options.

Without a wife to protect him, he dared not to go too far or else who knows what would happen?

"Yes, we can eat it. Daddy will cook it for you," Little Ke said to his daughter.

As he carefully carried the basket and walked inside the house, he met with the official husband of his late wife, Liu Chonglin.

Liu Chonglin was carrying freshly dried clothes in his hands. When he entered the house and saw the pork belly in Little Ke's hands, his expression changed.

"Little Ke, why did you take this pork belly? Did I not ask you to refuse? Even if we are widowers and alone, we should not take anything that we do not deserve," his voice was rather angry as he spoke those words.

Little Ke flinched and so did the children when they saw Daddy Liu getting angry.

"It is not that I didn't refuse, I did. But Brother Li refused to take the pork belly back, he asked me to cook something nutritious for the children and I—— I could not refuse!" Little Ke's eyes turned red with grief. "When was the last time our kids ate meat, Brother Chonglin? I can't even remember."

When Liu Chonglin heard Little Ke's words, his anger came to an abrupt halt as he turned to look at the children who were hiding behind a small and thin wooden pillar.

They were all eyeing the pork belly in the basket in Little Ke's hands with anticipation but dared not to say anything.
