Chapter 1222: The Weapon
At first Evan thought it was a will-o’-the-wisp, but this was the prison of the gods—how could there be a will-o’-the-wisp here?
When the glowing ball drew closer, he finally saw it was a cat—a very skinny cat, so thin that it was almost skeletal.
Its ears and eyes were surprisingly large, disproportionately large.
Its body was dark green and had no substance, like a ghost.
A long, thin scar ran from top to bottom across most of its face, crossing over its right eye.
Due to this scar, the cat didn’t look cute at all, but rather a bit fierce.
It waved its paw at Evan, seemingly interested in him, circled around him twice, and ran down with him in the darkness.
In ancient Egypt, cats held a high status; calling them the national animal wouldn’t be an exaggeration. Yet this creature appeared here…
Sure enough, with the appearance of the cat, more and more lights and shadows appeared in the distance.
Like stars in the night sky, one by one, they lit up.Evan looked up and his heart sank suddenly. These lights were the gods and demons imprisoned here.
The next second, he heard a faint sacred hymn. As the glowing orbs approached, the singing grew clearer.
Suddenly, someone was talking to him in his mind, though he couldn’t make out the words; it sounded like a murmur.
Chatter, chatter, chatter — it was irritating, making him wish they would speak louder.
This was a mental invasion, and upon being warned, he quickly used Occlumency.
Ignoring the gods and annoying voices that appeared, he quickened his pace and ran as fast as he could down the stairs.
Evan was sweating profusely and his breathing became heavier.
He didn’t know where the end was, he only knew he had to be faster and faster still.
Ramses II had told him that this was a battle of speed and endurance.
Either he was fast enough or he had enough endurance to reach the finish line before he was controlled by the gods.
He wasn’t sure how long he could hold on, so he could only push himself faster, sprinting down the stairs at full speed.
Glowing orbs and shadows gathered in front of Evan, all of them were the ancient Egyptian gods he had seen in the Hall of the Gods.
Like the weird cat, they now appeared as ghosts, without physical forms.
They gathered around, and some of the gods whooshed by, passing through Evan’s body.
It felt like being immersed in a bucket of ice water.
Evan couldn’t help but shiver. The heat generated by his running was instantly cooled to freezing, making him sharply alert.
He looked at the demons, which had different shapes, in front of him.
Some were very small, like tiny elves, constantly swaying in front of his eyes, trying to block his vision.
Some of them were as big as Evan and looked like ordinary humans. They flew up to him with friendly, smiling faces. In the blink of an eye, they turned into skeletons, demons, or other terrifying creatures, roaring at Evan as if hoping to scare him and make him fall down the stairs.
Some of the demons were hundreds of feet tall. They stood on the outermost side, staring intently at Evan.
These guys were a combination of animals and humans, with the largest number of fiends. In Evan’s view, they were purely monsters, their forms indescribable.
To his surprise, he recognized many of the figures among them.
These were the evil god creations carved on the ruins of the Fallen Centaurs — terrifying shadow beings, unspeakable entities.
Their forms were twisted, writhing with countless disgusting tentacles.
The Fallen Centaurs worshipped these beings but lacked the power to summon them into this world.
For that, a vast amount of flesh and blood and power was needed to construct bodies for them to descend.
Now, these chaotic and evil creatures had appeared among the gods of ancient Egypt. They were the remnants that survived the Last War, or they had arrived on Earth with meteors after a long interstellar journey. Their very existence was to spread chaos and evil, to lure people into corruption.
As Ramses II had said, these demons were the root cause of the catastrophe, the main culprits, and they had to be destroyed.
The demons seemed to have understood what Evan was going to do, so they didn’t show any mercy to him.
The chants and voices that were becoming clearer and clearer echoed in his mind. They sounded very unpleasant, like the prelude to death.
The melody slowed, but the pitch grew sharper, a piercing shriek that seemed to bore into his skull.
He tried his best to operate Occlumency, but his resistance was gradually weakening.
There were simply too many gods and demons that had gathered. Even though they had been defeated by Ramses II and had lost most of their power over the long years, a lean camel was still bigger than a horse. They were still stronger than Evan…
The mental assault did not stop. They were trying to forcibly control Evan and make him submit and become a slave.
Evan only felt his body getting heavier and heavier.
The energy brought by the Invigoration Draught quickly faded from his body, leaving him more exhausted than ever.
Evan couldn’t help but think that he hadn’t rested since a long time ago. He first went back thousands of years to fight the god Horus, and then rushed back to the Ruins of Amun Ra to fight the scorpion demon there, and now he had to climb the endless stairs to fight these gods and demons…
He was so tired that he suddenly felt an overwhelming desire to sleep.
As the slow, lingering melody of the hymn played, he suddenly felt a little puzzled. Why did he have to climb the stairs here?
What was he doing here? In the darkness, doing something meaningless?
Shouldn’t he be at Hogwarts? Where was Hermione?
If he had to act, he should be doing something meaningful.
Evan decided to give up. He couldn’t go on. He was so tired!
Occlumency gradually ceased … so tired!
With a stumble, Evan realized that he was falling, plummeting into the endless abyss of darkness.
It felt like a release. Finally, he could rest!
“Meoooow!” A cat cried miserably, and the hymn and voices of the gods and demons vanished.
When his consciousness returned to Evan’s body, he suddenly remembered that he came here to destroy that weapon.
At this moment, he was falling, and the glowing stairs were getting farther and farther away from him.
Above, hundreds of gods and demons showed ugly and satisfied smiles on their faces, and were very satisfied with Evan’s submission.
His eyes were shrouded in darkness and he could not see anything!
“Meoooow!”
A faint green light flashed, and Evan saw that the cat was still around him, falling into the abyss with him.
‘What should I do now?’
As if to answer his question, the cat suddenly ran diagonally upwards.
There, Evan saw a flight of stairs, and without hesitation, he raised his wand and cast a spell.
A rope emerged from the end of his wand and shot towards the staircase, wrapping around it layer by layer.
The descent came to an abrupt halt, and Evan grabbed the rope with his backhand, swiftly swinging through the air…
Because of this descent, his speed was much faster than he had imagined, and the staircase had already reached its end.
Evan saw his destination, and he saw the weapon he had come for.
“Oh my god, what on earth is this?” he exclaimed, staring in disbelief at the huge thing that appeared before his eyes…
