Chapter 1103 1103: Friends or Enemies
His shadows kept attacking the sword like a hungry beast trying to devour it and drag it into the abyss. But the sword resisted just as fiercely. The restrictions on the sword kept destroying the shadows.
The back and forth lasted for over three hours before there was finally a breakthrough. The slightest fragment of his darkness managed to invade the sword without being destroyed.
The moment the fragment of the abyss entered the sword, a small crack appeared. The restriction on the sword was broken.
The aura of death that was wrapped around the sword started dispersing, and the sword began changing its form. It was as if the sword were a dragon, shedding its scales while waking up.
The voices that had been appearing in Karyk's head disappeared just as abruptly. Was this the end of it? Karyk thought, as he sent even more of his abyssal essence to devour the sword and take it into his abyssal realm.
However, instead of the sword being dragged into his abyss, he felt his own consciousness being pulled away. It was a different sensation from immediate death.
He could feel that he was still alive, as his consciousness floated in an unfamiliar realm. He was certain that this was not a real realm but it wasn't an illusion either.
"Is this a special realm inside this sword?" he wondered, as his consciousness took on a physical form.
He found himself standing on barren land that was scorching hot. High in the sky, there were seven suns, each with a different color. The suns looked like beautiful gems wrapped in flames.
He didn't understand why he had been dragged here, or what the voices he had been hearing from the sword were. Did this sword have a treasured spirit? Was that the reason he had been dragged here?
He could easily force his way out, but he decided to check this place first. He could feel that it wasn't as simple as it looked, especially the suns in the sky.
As the Lord of Death, he was very sensitive to auras of life. And there were two such auras that he could feel coming from the middle sun.
He flew towards the seven suns since the land didn't have anything interesting. Even as his clothes melted and his skin started burning, he approached the sun in the middle.
He landed on the sun, forming new attire with the essence of the abyss. As long as his consciousness was protected by the abyss, he didn't have to worry about the flames.
He walked on the sun, where the flames made it harder to even see anything properly. Still, he found his way, following the faint auras of life.
Within minutes, he reached his destination, which was the core of life essence. There, he saw a sight that left him stunned. It wasn't just one person.
There were two men, both of them on their knees. There were chains around their neck, arms, waist and even legs, as if to keep them imprisoned here forever. Both of them had their eyes closed, appearing to be in a deep sleep.
"Were you the ones that were calling for freedom?" Karyk asked the men, but he didn't receive any answer. It was as if the men couldn't even listen to him.
Karyk didn't know anything about these two men, or why they were even trapped inside the sword that had such a powerful restriction that it could even kill him on the slightest of touch.
It wasn't an exaggeration to say that no one except him could open that restriction. If it wasn't for the abyss bringing him back to life every time he died, he never would've reached here either.
For these two people to be imprisoned with such a powerful restriction, it made him wonder just what their identity was. Just what had they even done to end up in his state?
He only remembered the voice of one person calling for help. It was another thing that left him confused. Did the other person not want freedom? In that case, who was asking for freedom and who wasn't? Just from the voice alone, he couldn't judge that.
Even if they were asleep, and shackled, Karyk could feel that both of them were dangerous. It was unclear if they were even friends or enemies.
His first thought was to try to devour one of them to get their memories so that he could see just what had happened to them. Unfortunately, he was inside the realm of the sword.
He didn't have enough control here. He could barely keep his consciousness awake in this world, let alone shift his focus on devouring someone.
Even if he wanted to devour one of them, he had to first get them out of here. For that, he had to free them which was another can of worms in itself. He felt like he was back to square one.
Even after thinking for a long time, he couldn't come to a decision. He could try to free both of them, but if they were enemies and started fighting, then the ship was going to be destroyed. He needed the ship for the moment.
In the end, he gave up on trying to free them for now. Even if he was to free them, he thought about doing it in the realm of the time lord. If he needed a distraction there, then these two were perfect beings for that.
He turned his back on the two shackled men, and left the realm of the swords, returning to his real body.
Since he returned, he didn't see slow cracks developing on the shackles that had tied up the two men. Now that the restriction on the sword had broken, even the shackles were growing weaker.
The cracks slowly spread across the chain, growing bigger with each passing minute. It was the same for both the shackles, with eyelids of the two men flickering, as if they were on the verge of waking up.
What do you think?
