Chapter 347: Story 347: The Mask of Deception
The forest opened into a clearing illuminated by an eerie green glow. Zara halted, her breath catching as she took in the sight before her. Towering above the treetops was a strange, otherworldly structure carved into a cliffside, its jagged towers glowing with faint orange light. It was as if the earth itself had grown a fortress of shadows.
"What is this place?" Callum asked, his voice tinged with awe and unease as he dragged Selena Rourke alongside him.
Selena smirked, despite her restraints. "You’re closer to the truth than you realize. This is where the game really begins." @@novelbin@@
Ignoring her cryptic remark, Zara turned her attention to the structure. A chilling breeze carried whispers, faint and unintelligible, as though the air itself was alive. The closer they moved toward the fortress, the more Zara’s instincts screamed at her to turn back.
But something compelled her forward. A force—not just curiosity, but something deeper—seemed to pull her to the center of the clearing, where a small pedestal stood. Atop it rested a mask. Intricately designed, the mask gleamed with metallic hues of green and silver, its delicate patterns resembling creeping vines and teardrops.
"This is no ordinary fortress," Zara muttered, stepping closer. "And that mask isn’t just decoration."
Selena laughed softly. "You’re sharp. The Mask of Deception reveals truths and cloaks lies. But beware—wear it too long, and you won’t recognize your own reflection."
Callum shot her a sharp look. "What does she mean?"
Zara ignored him and studied the mask. It called to her in a way she couldn’t explain, an unspoken promise that it held answers to the Syndicate’s plans. Zara extended a hand, her fingers hovering above the cool metal.
"Don’t!" Callum warned. "You don’t know what it’ll do."
Zara hesitated. The air grew colder, the whispers louder, as if they were begging her to take it. Finally, her fingers brushed the surface.
The moment Zara lifted the mask, the whispers ceased. A deafening silence fell over the clearing. Then, as she held it to her face, the world around her shifted.
In an instant, Zara stood in a vast hall of mirrors, her own reflection staring back at her a thousand times over. Yet each reflection was slightly different—some younger, some older, some dressed in clothing she didn’t recognize.
"What is this place?" Zara demanded.
A voice echoed through the hall, neither male nor female. "You seek the truth, Zara Kincaid. But the truth requires a price. Are you willing to pay it?" Find adventures on NovelBin.Côm
She glanced at the mirrors, each version of herself seeming to whisper different secrets. Her reflection closest to her spoke aloud. "The Syndicate’s strength is rooted in deception. But to see through their lies, you must confront your own."
The vision faded, and Zara gasped as she returned to the clearing. Callum shook her shoulder. "What happened?"
Zara glanced at the mask, her grip tightening. "We’re going in. The answers we need are inside."
The fortress loomed ahead, its shadows deepening. Zara stepped forward, knowing there was no turning back.
What do you think?
