Chapter 357 Story 357: The Forsaken Forest
The air was thick with tension, a heavy fog curling through the gnarled trees of the forest. Zara Kincaid held her pistol steady, her sharp eyes scanning the underbrush for movement. She could hear the faint crackle of leaves and twigs breaking in the distance, each sound amplified by the eerie silence surrounding her.
"Another ambush?" she muttered under her breath, tightening her grip on the weapon.
The forest felt alive, its twisted branches arching toward her like skeletal hands. Zara crouched low, blending into the shadows, her crimson outfit muted under the dim light filtering through the canopy. She felt a shift in the air, an instinct honed by countless battles. Someone—or something—was stalking her.
A blur of motion darted past the corner of her eye. Zara spun on her heel, firing off a single shot. The bullet tore through the fog, striking a humanoid creature that collapsed with a guttural growl. Its glowing eyes flickered briefly before going dark.@@novelbin@@
"Enhanced drones," Zara muttered, recognizing the cybernetic implants grafted onto the creature's head. "Who's controlling them this far out?"
Before she could ponder further, the ground trembled, and a chorus of shrieks echoed from deeper within the forest. Dozens of glowing eyes lit up the darkness, converging toward her position.
Zara cursed, holstering her pistol and pulling out a sleek, modified submachine gun. The creatures burst through the fog—half-human, half-machine monstrosities with razor-sharp claws and metallic limbs.
She moved like a dancer, her every step precise and deliberate. Zara's gunfire erupted in sharp bursts, mowing down the first wave of attackers. She ducked and rolled as claws swiped inches from her, her blade flashing as she sliced through another creature's neck.
One leapt at her from the side, its claws aimed for her throat. Zara spun mid-step, catching its momentum and slamming it into a tree with a bone-crunching impact. She shot it point-blank, the glow in its eyes fading instantly.
But the swarm kept coming. "Too many," she muttered, her breath coming in short bursts.
In a calculated retreat, Zara sprinted deeper into the forest, her feet barely making a sound on the damp earth. She needed a choke point, somewhere to funnel the horde.
Up ahead, she spotted a natural clearing surrounded by jagged rock formations. Zara dashed inside, planting explosive charges along the perimeter. The creatures followed, their relentless pursuit closing in.
"Come on, just a little closer," she murmured, her thumb hovering over the detonator.
The first wave entered the clearing, their screeches deafening. Zara pressed the trigger, and the forest lit up with a fiery explosion. The ground shook as debris rained down, the flames consuming most of the horde.
Breathing heavily, Zara scanned the smoldering remains. A single figure emerged from the inferno—a towering drone, its body sleek and fully armored.
"Of course," Zara said, raising her weapon. "It's never that easy."
