Chapter 360 Story 360: The Web Tightens
Zara crouched by the mercenary's lifeless body, her fingers swiftly inspecting his armor for clues. The insignia, a strange emblem resembling a spider wrapped in barbed wire, was etched into the chest plate. It wasn't a symbol she recognized, but her gut told her it was tied to something far bigger than a random bounty hunter.
She retrieved his comms device—a small, sleek earpiece—hoping it would yield more answers. Turning it over, she noticed a faint blinking light. A tracker.
Her blood ran cold.
The trap wasn't just for her—it was still active.
The faint hum of drones approaching from the distance pulled Zara to her feet. She sprinted to the nearest window, glancing out at the ruined landscape beyond. The buzzing grew louder, and through the crumbled edges of the building, she spotted two aerial drones weaving between the skeletal remains of buildings. Their sleek metallic forms reflected the faint moonlight, each equipped with glowing sensors and mounted weapons.
"Fantastic," Zara muttered, slinging the stolen rifle over her shoulder. She wouldn't stand a chance in a straight fight, not with two highly advanced killing machines hunting her.
Her mind raced as she mapped out her escape. The crumbling ruins offered plenty of hiding spots but limited routes for a clean getaway. The mercenary's body offered another opportunity—his armor had an integrated camouflage system. She quickly activated it, the suit shimmering briefly before blending with the environment. It wasn't perfect, but it would give her a few precious moments of invisibility.
Zara slipped out of the building, moving swiftly and silently. Every step was calculated, her ears straining for the sound of the drones' movements. She ducked behind a shattered wall, her eyes scanning the street ahead.
One of the drones hovered nearby, its glowing red eye scanning the area with mechanical precision. Zara held her breath, waiting for it to turn. When it finally shifted its focus, she moved, darting across the street to another cluster of debris.
The second drone descended from above, its sensors flaring as it detected motion. A sharp beam of light swept over her position, and Zara dropped to the ground, blending into the rubble. She watched as it passed overhead, her heartbeat steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins.
Reaching the edge of the ruins, she spotted her salvation—a rusted manhole cover leading into the city's abandoned sewer system. It wasn't ideal, but it was her best shot.
The first drone suddenly turned back, its sensors locking onto the faint energy signature from the stolen rifle. Zara cursed under her breath and threw a small EMP grenade from her belt. It detonated midair, the pulse frying the drone's circuits. The machine spiraled out of control, crashing into a nearby wall.@@novelbin@@
Before the second drone could react, Zara sprinted for the manhole, prying it open and slipping inside. The darkness swallowed her as she descended, the distant hum of the remaining drone fading behind her.
As she splashed into the damp tunnels below, Zara took a moment to catch her breath. Her hand tightened around the stolen rifle. Whoever was hunting her wasn't just playing games—they were sending a message. Continue reading stories on My Virtual Library Empire
