Chapter 363 Story 363: The Code

Zara Kincaid pressed her back against the cold steel wall, her Glock steady in her gloved hands. The soft hum of the console in front of her was the only sound in the dimly lit control room. The flickering monitor displayed encrypted data streams, a digital maze she had to decode to access the central archives. Every second counted; the mercenaries would soon realize she wasn't among the dead in the fiery chaos she'd left behind.

Her dark eyes scanned the keypad. It wasn't just about entering numbers—it was a sequence, a puzzle designed to stall anyone who didn't have clearance. She had dealt with such locks before, back when her life involved securing high-profile assets rather than destroying them.

Her earpiece buzzed softly. It was Vex, her ally and hacker on the outside. "Zara, I've patched into the system. You've got thirty seconds before the failsafe kicks in."

"No pressure, then," she muttered under her breath. Her fingers danced across the keypad, punching in the sequence Vex relayed. A green light blinked, and the console whirred as the encrypted data unraveled. Zara exhaled in relief but didn't lower her guard.

"Bingo. You're in," Vex confirmed, his voice crackling slightly. "Downloading the files now. This is it, Zara—the proof we need to expose Syndicate Prime."

Zara's heart quickened. The Syndicate had been the shadowy puppet masters behind the apocalypse, orchestrating chaos to profit from the ruins of humanity. But exposing them was only step one; vengeance would follow.

The soft hiss of a door opening snapped her focus. She pivoted, her Glock aimed at the source of the noise. A figure emerged from the shadows—a mercenary clad in sleek, tactical armor. His weapon gleamed under the dim light, trained on her.

"Drop the gun," he ordered, his voice cold and calculated. His stance was firm, his eyes devoid of fear. This wasn't a rookie; this was a seasoned operative.

Zara didn't flinch. Her finger remained steady on the trigger. "You're wasting your breath."@@novelbin@@

The mercenary smirked. "You think you're the only one who knows how to play the game? I've been tracking you since the perimeter breach. Impressive moves back there, but this is where it ends."

She tilted her head slightly, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "You talk too much."

Before he could react, Zara lunged forward, her movements a blur. Her knee connected with his wrist, forcing his weapon to clatter to the ground. He swung at her, but she sidestepped, countering with a precise strike to his ribs. The mercenary stumbled, winded but far from out.

The fight was swift, brutal. They traded blows in the confined space, each anticipating the other's moves. Zara's experience as a security operative gave her an edge, but the mercenary's resilience was formidable. Finally, she delivered a devastating roundhouse kick, sending him crashing into the console.

Alarms blared as the impact triggered a security breach. Zara grabbed the USB drive from the console and bolted for the exit. The Syndicate's secrets were hers, but now, the entire facility knew she was here.
