Chapter 365 Story 365: Shadow's Edge
The night was a void, broken only by the pale glow of a crescent moon. Zara moved like a whisper through the forest bordering the Syndicate's stronghold. Shadows clung to her like a second skin, hiding her from the searchlights that swept the area.
Her breath was steady, her mind sharper than ever. Each step was calculated, each pause deliberate. She wasn't just running—she was hunting now.
The USB in her pouch felt like a ticking bomb. It held secrets the Syndicate would kill for, and Zara knew they wouldn't stop until she was silenced.
Ahead, a faint hum reached her ears. A drone.
Zara melted into the tree line, her back pressed against the rough bark. The drone hovered, its red sensor scanning the ground like a predatory eye. She waited, unmoving, her Glock at the ready.
The hum grew faint as the drone drifted past. Zara exhaled softly, her muscles unwinding.
"Vex," she whispered into her comm.
"Go."
"Drone patrols. They're sweeping the perimeter."
"Figures," Vex replied, his voice crackling. "They've locked down the zone. You need to find higher ground. There's an old comms tower a click east—it might give us a way out."
"Got it."
Zara slipped from the shadows, her steps quick and silent. The forest was alive with sound—leaves rustling, branches creaking—but none of it masked the distant thud of boots.
They were coming.
The comms tower loomed ahead, its rusted frame cutting through the trees. Zara reached its base and scanned the area. Clear—for now.
The ladder was brittle, each rung threatening to give under her weight, but she climbed anyway. The higher she went, the more the world spread out below her—lights of the compound, search parties weaving through the woods, and the faint outline of a distant river.
"Vex, I'm at the top."
"Good. Plug me in."
Zara yanked out a portable uplink and jammed it into the tower's ancient panel. Sparks flew, and the console sputtered to life.
"I'm in," Vex said after a moment. "Routing options... Wait. Zara, you've got a problem."
"Just one?" she quipped, scanning the horizon.

"They're onto you. Reinforcements are coming fast."
Zara's jaw tightened. She spotted movement below—shadows flickering through the trees.
"Vex, I need an exit. Now."
"There's a clearing west of your position. I'll reroute a supply chopper to pick you up, but you've got ten minutes tops."
Zara didn't reply. She was already climbing down.@@novelbin@@
The ground felt unstable beneath her feet as she hit the forest floor running. The Syndicate was closing in, their shadows chasing hers.
But Zara didn't falter. She was the shadow. And shadows never stayed still.
Gunfire erupted behind her, bullets tearing through the trees. Zara zigzagged, her Glock barking as she fired back.
The clearing came into view—a patch of moonlit grass surrounded by trees. The thrum of rotor blades grew louder.
The chopper was coming. And so were they.
Zara had seconds to act.
What do you think?
