Chapter 435: Story 435: Descent into the Abyss

The ancient staircase spiraled downward into the earth, each step worn smooth by centuries of use. A faint draft carried the stench of damp stone and decay, causing the team to exchange wary glances. The eerie silence that hung in the air was broken only by the faint drip of water echoing somewhere below.

"This doesn’t look inviting," Ghost muttered, crouching low to inspect the first few steps. "No traps so far, but I don’t trust it." Continue reading at NovelBin.Côm

"Trust isn’t a luxury we have," Rook replied, adjusting his gear. "Stay alert. We’re moving."

The team descended cautiously, their footsteps muffled by the uneven stone. The flickering light from their torches cast long, distorted shadows on the walls, the narrow stairwell amplifying every sound.

Viper clutched the ancient tome tightly to her chest. The book had grown heavier with each passing moment, its pulse now a steady thrum in her hands. "The energy here... it’s stronger," she whispered.

"Stronger how?" Shadow asked, her eyes scanning the darkness ahead.

"It’s like... the book is pulling us toward something," Viper said, her voice trembling. "Or something is pulling it."

"Let’s hope it’s not another horde of those creatures," Bulwark grumbled, his heavy boots echoing loudly.

The stairway opened abruptly into a vast chamber, the ceiling soaring high above. Faint light emanated from bioluminescent fungi clinging to the walls, casting the room in an eerie green glow. In the center of the chamber was a massive stone door, engraved with ancient runes similar to those in the dungeon above.

Rook raised a hand, signaling the team to stop. "Ghost, check the perimeter."

Ghost disappeared into the shadows, his footsteps silent. The rest of the team fanned out cautiously, their weapons at the ready.

Shadow approached the stone door, her fingers brushing over the intricate carvings. "These runes... they’re different," she murmured. "More complex than anything we’ve seen before."

Viper stepped closer, the tome in her hands beginning to glow faintly. "The book... it’s reacting to this door," she said, flipping through its pages. "There’s a passage here. It’s... a warning."

"What kind of warning?" Rook asked, his tone sharp.

"’Beyond this gate lies the source of the curse,’" Viper read aloud. "’Those who enter must face the harbinger of despair.’"

"Sounds lovely," Bulwark said, sarcasm thick in his voice.

Before anyone could respond, Ghost reappeared, his expression grim. "We’re not alone," he said. "There’s movement in the shadows. Lots of it."

As if on cue, the faint sound of shuffling footsteps filled the chamber. From the darkness emerged a group of humanoid figures, their eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. Their movements were jerky, unnatural, as though they were being controlled by unseen strings.

"Positions!" Rook barked, the team forming a defensive circle around the stone door.

Viper’s hands trembled as she opened the tome, its pages glowing brighter. "I think... I can activate the door," she said.

"Then do it," Rook ordered. "We’ll hold them off."

The creatures closed in, their guttural growls echoing in the chamber. Bulwark unleashed a hail of bullets, the sound deafening in the enclosed space. Shadow’s rifle cracked, each shot finding its mark.

Viper began chanting, the ancient words flowing from her lips as though they were not her own. The runes on the stone door flared to life, their light growing brighter with each passing second.

"Hurry up!" Ghost shouted, firing his suppressed weapon into the approaching horde.

With a final, desperate cry, Viper slammed her hand against the door. The runes exploded in a blinding flash of light, the creatures recoiling in agony. The massive door began to grind open, revealing a dark, yawning void beyond.

"Move!" Rook shouted, ushering the team through the opening.

As they stepped into the darkness, the door slammed shut behind them, cutting off the sounds of the creatures. The team stood in silence, the oppressive weight of the unknown pressing down on them.

"Where are we?" Shadow whispered, her voice barely audible.

Rook scanned the darkness, his expression grim. "Deeper than we’ve ever been," he said. "And there’s no turning back now."
