Chapter 438 Story 438: The Endless Descent

The ancient spiral staircase seemed to defy logic, winding endlessly downward into a vast void. Each step resonated with a hollow echo, as though the stones themselves were mourning. The sconces on the walls emitted a dim, flickering light, but as the team ventured deeper, the flames turned a ghostly blue, casting eerie shadows on the curved walls.

Rook halted the team midway down, raising a fist. "Hold." His eyes scanned the descent below. "This place isn't just deep… it's alive."

Viper gripped the tome tighter, her knuckles white. The book's glow pulsed erratically now, like a heartbeat. "The energy here… it's suffocating. The further we go, the stronger it becomes."

"It's like walking into a trap," Shadow muttered, her sniper rifle at the ready. "Anything could be waiting for us below."

"No doubt," Ghost added, his voice calm but tense. He crouched low, scanning for traps or signs of ambush. "The walls feel… off. Like they're closing in."

The team resumed their descent, their movements cautious and deliberate. The oppressive silence was broken only by the distant sound of grinding stone, a low, ominous rumble that seemed to come from the depths below. As they rounded a curve, the staircase abruptly widened into a circular landing. At its center stood a stone monolith, covered in glowing runes that twisted and writhed like living things.

"This must be important," Rook said, gesturing for Ghost to scout the perimeter. "Viper, what does the book say?"

Viper flipped through the pages, the text shifting and reshaping itself before her eyes. "It's a warning," she said, her voice trembling. 'Those who pass beyond this point will face the Keeper of Eternity. Turn back, or be consumed by the abyss.'"

Bulwark let out a grim chuckle, his heavy weapon resting on his shoulder. "I'm guessing we're not turning back."

"Not an option," Rook said, stepping closer to the monolith. "Stay alert. If there's a Keeper, it's watching us."

As if in response, the runes on the monolith flared, flooding the chamber with blinding light. A deep, guttural growl echoed through the air, shaking the very stones beneath their feet. From the shadows emerged a towering figure, its form shifting between solid and ethereal. It carried a massive blade that seemed to hum with power, and its hollow eyes burned with malice.

"Positions!" Rook shouted, the team falling into a defensive formation.

The Keeper lunged, its blade slashing through the air with deadly precision. Bulwark unleashed a torrent of fire, the rounds striking the creature but passing through its ghostly form. Shadow fired her rifle, aiming for the glowing runes on its chest.

"The runes!" Viper shouted. "They're its weakness!"

Rook charged forward, his blade glowing faintly as it clashed with the Keeper's weapon. "Focus fire on the runes!" he commanded.

The team fought with coordinated precision, their attacks relentless. Viper chanted from the tome, the runes on the monolith flickering in response. With a final, desperate strike, Rook plunged his blade into the Keeper's chest, shattering the runes. The creature let out an otherworldly scream before dissolving into mist.

The chamber fell silent, the monolith's glow fading. Rook turned to the team, his expression resolute. "This was only the beginning. Whatever lies ahead, we face it together."

Without another word, the team continued their descent, the spiral staircase beckoning them ever deeper into the unknown.
