Chapter 456: Story 456: The Subterranean Threshold
The tunnel's descent grew steeper with every step, and the faint, pulsating light ahead took on an unnatural rhythm, casting eerie shadows that danced on the damp stone walls. The sound of the trickling water had grown to a steady flow, echoing ominously in the confined space.
Rook led the way, his rifle held steady, eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. Behind him, Ghost moved like a shadow, his silenced pistol at the ready. Shadow brought up the rear, her sniper rifle slung over her back as her sharp eyes took in every detail of the surroundings.
"Whatever's ahead," Viper murmured, her voice barely audible, "it's not welcoming."
The tunnel abruptly widened into a massive underground chamber, the ceiling arched and supported by ancient stone pillars. The pulsating light came from a glowing, circular portal at the center of the chamber, its surface shimmering like liquid mercury. Strange symbols, carved deep into the stone floor, surrounded the portal, glowing faintly in unison with its pulse.
"An extraction point? Or something worse?" Shadow asked, her voice tinged with suspicion.
"Only one way to find out," Rook replied, motioning for the team to fan out and secure the perimeter.
As they stepped into the chamber, the air grew colder, and the faint hum of the portal filled their ears. The water from the tunnel flowed into a carved groove around the portal, forming a shallow moat.
Bulwark examined the carvings on the floor, his heavy boots splashing in the shallow water. "These symbols… They look like coordinates, but not for anything I've seen before."

"Not just coordinates," Ghost added, crouching near the portal. "This is some kind of summoning or transportation system. Definitely not local tech."
Before anyone could respond, the portal's pulsing light intensified, and the room was filled with a low, guttural growl that reverberated through the stone walls.
"Positions!" Rook barked, raising his rifle.
From the portal emerged a towering figure, humanoid in shape but grotesquely twisted. Its body was a mass of black, writhing tendrils, and its glowing, red eyes locked onto the team with a malevolent intelligence.
"Contact!" Shadow called out, already aiming down her scope.
Bulwark unleashed a barrage from his heavy machine gun, the deafening roar of gunfire filling the chamber. The creature staggered under the assault but retaliated, lashing out with its tendrils. One struck a pillar, shattering it and sending debris crashing to the ground.
Ghost moved swiftly, flanking the creature and landing precise shots at its exposed joints. Meanwhile, Viper darted in close, slashing at the tendrils with her combat knife, her movements a blur of precision.
"Shadow, find a weak point!" Rook ordered, keeping the creature distracted with suppressive fire.
Shadow's calm voice cut through the chaos. "Its core is in the chest—aim for the glow!"
Rook nodded. "Team, focus fire on the core!"
As the creature roared in defiance, the team unleashed a coordinated attack, their bullets and blades converging on the glowing center of its chest. The creature let out an ear-splitting shriek before collapsing, its body dissolving into a pool of inky black liquid.
The room fell silent, save for the faint hum of the portal.
"What now?" Viper asked, catching her breath.
Rook stepped closer to the portal, staring into its shimmering depths. "We're going in. Whatever this is, it's the key to ending this."
The team exchanged glances but trusted their leader. One by one, they stepped through the portal, vanishing into the unknown.
