Chapter 471: Story 471: The Illuminated Passage
The team stepped cautiously into a narrow, well-lit corridor that stretched endlessly before them. The soft amber glow from sconces on the brick walls provided an unsettling warmth in the otherwise oppressive underground labyrinth. The smooth, polished stones beneath their boots were a stark contrast to the jagged terrain they had traversed earlier.
"This place is different," Ghost whispered, his voice barely audible over the faint hum of electricity. "It’s… too clean."
Viper glanced at the lights, her fingers brushing the wall. "Electricity. Someone—or something—is maintaining this. We’re not alone down here."
"Stay sharp," Rook ordered, his tone clipped. He signaled for the team to move forward in formation, his eyes scanning for traps.
As they advanced, a faint sound echoed through the corridor—a rhythmic clicking, almost like the ticking of a clock. Shadow paused, tilting her head to listen. "That’s not mechanical," she said, her voice tense. "It’s… organic."
Bulwark tightened his grip on his weapon. "Organic? Great. Just what we need—more surprises."
The clicking grew louder, reverberating off the walls. Suddenly, the lights flickered, plunging the corridor into darkness for a brief moment before the sconces reignited. But now, the warm glow had shifted to an eerie red.
"Something’s coming," Ghost said, stepping back into the shadows.
The team froze as a figure appeared at the far end of the corridor. At first, it seemed human—tall and cloaked, its movements slow and deliberate. But as it drew closer, the dim red light revealed its true form. Its face was obscured by a mask of twisted metal, and its hands ended in long, claw-like appendages. The rhythmic clicking grew louder with each step it took, emanating from its claws scraping against the stone.
"Hold your ground," Rook commanded.
The creature stopped a few meters away, tilting its head as if studying them. Then, without warning, it lunged.

"Open fire!" Rook yelled.
Bulwark unleashed a barrage of bullets, the deafening roar of gunfire echoing through the corridor. The creature moved with unnatural speed, evading most of the shots. Ghost fired a well-placed round, striking its leg and causing it to stagger, but it recovered almost instantly.
Viper leapt into action, her blade flashing in the red light as she engaged the creature in close combat. It swiped at her with its claws, narrowly missing her as she ducked and retaliated with a slash across its chest.
"Shadow, find a weakness!" Rook shouted as he joined the fray, using his heavy weapon to block the creature’s attacks.
Shadow scanned the creature, her eyes darting between its movements and the glowing runes etched into its mask. "The mask!" she yelled. "It’s controlling it—aim for the mask!"
With precise coordination, the team focused their attacks. Ghost fired a shot that cracked the mask, and Viper delivered the final blow, shattering it with a powerful strike. The creature let out an otherworldly shriek before collapsing to the ground, motionless.
The corridor fell silent, the red glow fading back to the warm amber light.
"Let’s keep moving," Rook said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "Whatever’s ahead, it knows we’re coming."
