Chapter 494: Story 494: The Infernal Ambush
The team barely had time to catch their breath as the collapsing inferno illuminated the midnight sky. Embers floated around them, a fiery snowstorm crackling with malice. The smell of burning wood and chemicals lingered in the air, clinging to their gear like a haunting memory.
"We're not out of the woods yet," Commander Rook muttered, his voice muffled through his tactical mask. "This wasn't just a trap—it was a warning."
Before anyone could respond, a high-pitched whistling sound pierced the air. Ghost's sharp reflexes kicked in as he shouted, "Incoming!"
A fiery projectile smashed into the debris of the burning house, detonating on impact and sending shockwaves through the ground. The explosion reignited the blaze, sending sparks and molten shrapnel flying in all directions.
"Mortars!" Shadow shouted, diving for cover behind a nearby overturned vehicle. She quickly scanned the perimeter through her sniper scope. "They've got us pinned down. I see three—no, four hostiles on the ridge, setting up another round."
"Viper, flank right and take them out!" Rook barked, taking cover behind a crumbling stone wall. "Bulwark, suppressing fire!"
Viper disappeared into the shadows, her agility unmatched as she navigated the uneven terrain. Bulwark unleashed a torrent of suppressing fire from his heavy machine gun, the booming shots echoing through the chaos. Sparks flew as bullets ricocheted off the assailants' cover.
Rook signaled to Ghost, who was already advancing low and fast, his silenced weapon in hand. "Ghost, take point. Shadow, give us cover!"
Shadow steadied her rifle, exhaling slowly as she picked off the first target with a clean headshot. "One down," she said calmly, her voice betraying no sign of the chaos around her.
Meanwhile, Viper reached the ridge undetected. She struck swiftly, her combat knife flashing as she silently neutralized the second hostile. A third turned to react, but she was faster, her sidearm barking once to finish the job.
"Three down!" Viper reported through comms.
The fourth hostile attempted to retreat, abandoning the mortar launcher. Ghost was on him in an instant, a precise burst from his rifle dropping the assailant before he could escape.
"All clear," Ghost confirmed, his voice steady.
The team regrouped near the smoldering ruins, tension thick in the air. Rook inspected the mortar launcher left behind by their attackers. "Military-grade equipment," he noted grimly. "This isn't just a random ambush. Someone's funding this."
Shadow retrieved a small, fireproof container from one of the fallen enemies. Inside was a single USB drive, marked with a symbol they all recognized: the emblem of Black Talon Operatives, a rogue mercenary group known for their brutality.
Rook's jaw tightened as he pocketed the drive. "Looks like Black Talon's officially in the game. And they're not playing fair."
"Let's make them regret it," Viper said, her voice low and deadly.
"Agreed," Rook replied. "But first, we find out what's on this drive. It's time to turn their game against them."
The team vanished into the night, the burning wreckage behind them now a battlefield marker in a war that was escalating by the minute.
What do you think?
