Chapter 543 543: Story 543: Shadows in the Fog

The night grew colder as a thick fog rolled in, swallowing the industrial zone in a sea of gray. The glowing eyes of the undead pierced through the mist, a chilling reminder that the fight was far from over. ZETU regrouped near an abandoned shipping depot, their breaths visible in the damp air.

"Report," Captain Marcus Kane said, scanning the foggy expanse.

"Ammo's running low," Riley muttered, checking her sniper rifle. "And visibility just dropped to zero. Perfect conditions for getting ambushed."

"Shield's dented, but I can still hold," Derek added, flexing his arms as he adjusted the battered riot shield.

"The fog's giving them the advantage," Lila observed, her pistols drawn as she prowled the perimeter. "They could be anywhere."

Jenna wiped soot from her face. "I've got half a tank left on the flamethrower. Let's make it count."

"Brain, you seeing anything?" Marcus asked over the comms.

Ethan's voice came through, tense. "Negative, Captain. The drones can't penetrate this fog. It's like it's interfering with the signal."

Marcus frowned. "Of course it is. Everyone stay sharp. They're here somewhere."

As if on cue, a low growl rumbled through the mist. The team froze, their weapons raised. The sound of shuffling feet grew louder, closing in from all directions.

"Blaze, light it up," Marcus ordered.

Jenna stepped forward, releasing a jet of flame into the fog. The fire illuminated the scene briefly, revealing dozens of zombies encircling the team. Their glowing eyes were hollow, their decayed faces twisted in silent rage.

"They're on us!" Riley shouted, firing a round through the head of a nearby zombie.

The horde surged forward. Derek braced himself, his shield absorbing the impact as the undead clawed at him. Jenna's flamethrower roared to life again, carving a fiery path through the attackers.

Marcus fired his shotgun at close range, taking down two zombies with a single blast. "Huntress, find us a way out!"

Lila darted through the fog, her sharp eyes searching for an escape route. She climbed onto a shipping container, her pistols barking as she picked off stragglers. From her vantage point, she spotted a chain-link fence partially obscured by overgrowth.

"Captain! Fence to the east! Looks like it leads to the docks!"

"Good work! Everyone, fall back!" Marcus commanded.

The team moved as one, cutting through the horde as they headed for the fence. Derek brought up the rear, his shield protecting the others from the relentless attacks.

As they reached the fence, Marcus gestured to Jenna. "Blaze, burn it!"

Jenna stepped forward, melting through the chain-link with a concentrated blast. The team scrambled through the opening just as the horde closed in.

On the other side, they found themselves on the edge of a dark, desolate dockyard. The fog was thicker here, and the sound of lapping water mingled with the distant groans of zombies.

"This isn't over," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the darkness.

"No," Lila agreed, reloading her pistols. "It's just beginning."
