Chapter 555: Story 555: Rise of the Scorched Lands
The barn was nothing more than smoldering rubble, its skeletal frame silhouetted against a blood-red sunset. The ZETU team stood amidst the destruction, catching their breath. But the eerie silence was short-lived.
Ethan 'Brain' O'Connor's voice broke over the comms. "Uh, Captain, you're not gonna like this. I'm picking up massive heat signatures—multiple, and they're closing in fast."
From the horizon, shambling figures emerged. Unlike the standard zombies, their charred bodies glowed faintly, as if molten lava coursed beneath their rotting skin. Smoke billowed from their mouths, and their eyes burned like embers in the fading light.
"What in the hell are those?" Sergeant Jenna 'Blaze' Hart muttered, gripping her flamethrower tightly.
"Looks like they've been… scorched," Detective Lila 'Huntress' Navarro said, her dual pistols raised. "Maybe that explosion woke them up—or created them."
The creatures began to pick up speed, moving faster than anything the team had encountered before. Their molten limbs left scorched footprints in the dirt, and the air around them shimmered with heat.
"Blaze, fire's not gonna work on these things," Captain Marcus Kane ordered. "Quick Shot, focus on headshots. Shield, you're on containment. Brain, give me options!"
Ethan's voice was frantic but steady. "They're radiating extreme heat. If they get too close, they'll fry us alive. You need to keep them at range."
"Got it. Everyone, spread out!" Marcus barked.
Riley 'Quick Shot' Bennett found a vantage point on the remnants of the barn, her sniper rifle aimed at the advancing horde. "Lining up my shots… one down." Her bullet pierced the glowing head of the nearest zombie, causing it to collapse in a heap of ash.
But for every scorched zombie that fell, two more seemed to appear. They surged forward like a molten tide, their guttural growls rising into an ear-splitting chorus.
Derek 'Shield' Coleman charged into the fray, his riot shield absorbing the brunt of their attacks. "They're burning through my shield!" he yelled, using his baton to smash one of the creatures back.
Jenna gritted her teeth, switching tactics. "If fire won't kill them, maybe I can control it!" She lobbed an incendiary grenade into the middle of the horde, creating a wall of flames that forced the creatures to reroute.
"Nice move, Blaze!" Marcus called, firing his shotgun into the nearest zombie. "Huntress, find the source of these things. They have to be coming from somewhere!"
Lila darted through the chaos, following a trail of scorched earth that led her to an open pit near the barn. Inside, glowing veins of magma crisscrossed the dirt, and more creatures clawed their way to the surface.
"Captain, we've got a serious problem," Lila said, her voice tight. "This pit is a spawning ground. If we don't seal it, they'll keep coming."
"Brain, can we collapse it?" Marcus asked.
Ethan hesitated. "If we hit it hard enough, maybe. But whatever's fueling it might blow—and take us with it."
Marcus nodded grimly. "We don't have a choice. Everyone, fall back! Blaze, prep the big one!"
As the team retreated, Jenna armed her most powerful explosive, her hands steady despite the chaos. She glanced at Marcus, who gave her a firm nod.
"For ZETU," she whispered, tossing the device into the pit.
The explosion lit up the night, sending a shockwave that flattened the remaining zombies and sealed the pit in a cascade of molten rock.
When the dust settled, the team regrouped, exhausted but alive.
"Let's hope that's the last of them," Marcus said, though his tone betrayed his doubt.
In the distance, a low rumble echoed beneath the earth, promising that their fight was far from over.
What do you think?
