Chapter 562: Story 562: Shadows of the Forgotten Farm
The evening sun bled into the horizon, casting an orange glow over the abandoned farmhouse. Its silhouette loomed against the darkening sky, skeletal trees surrounding it like silent sentinels. The ZETU convoy came to a halt on the cracked dirt road leading to the decrepit structure. Captain Marcus Kane stepped out, his shotgun slung across his shoulder, scanning the area with a practiced eye.
"This place screams ambush," muttered Sergeant Jenna Hart, her flamethrower ready.
"The beacon we tracked led us here," replied Ethan O'Connor, his fingers flying over his tablet. "Multiple heat signatures inside, but... they're faint. Could be undead, or survivors."
Officer Derek Coleman hoisted his riot shield and nodded toward the house. "Either way, we need to clear it. Riley, take overwatch."
Riley Bennett climbed atop the rusted remains of a nearby tractor, her sniper rifle gleaming in the fading light. "Got your backs," she murmured, her scope already sweeping the windows of the farmhouse.
As the rest of the team approached the front porch, the ground beneath their boots shifted uneasily. Lila Navarro, crouched low with her pistols drawn, motioned for the others to halt. She inspected the porch steps, noticing deep claw marks etched into the wood.
"Something was dragged inside," she whispered.
Marcus nodded and signaled for Derek to breach. The door creaked open under the weight of Derek's shield, revealing a dimly lit interior. The farmhouse was a ruin, its walls covered in grime and faded bloodstains. Broken furniture lay scattered across the floor, and the air was thick with the stench of decay.
The team advanced cautiously, flashlights cutting through the gloom. Ethan kept close to the rear, monitoring his tablet. "Heat signatures are moving...slowly. They're coming from below us," he said, his voice tense.
"A cellar," Jenna guessed, eyeing a trapdoor in the kitchen floor.
Suddenly, a low growl rumbled through the house, followed by a sharp scream. The team spun around as a figure lunged from the shadows—a grotesque zombie with its skin stretched taut over its skeletal frame, its glowing eyes filled with rage. Marcus fired his shotgun, the blast echoing through the house. The creature crumpled to the ground, but the noise seemed to stir the entire farmhouse.
From the cellar came the sound of splintering wood and furious growls. The trapdoor burst open, and a horde of emaciated zombies spilled out, their bony limbs unnaturally fast.
"Fall back!" Marcus barked.
Jenna ignited her flamethrower, creating a wall of fire to slow the onslaught. Derek used his shield to block the narrow doorway as the team retreated toward the front porch.
"Riley, we need cover fire!" Marcus shouted.
"On it!" Riley's rifle cracked, taking down zombies that had begun emerging from the woods around the farmhouse.
Ethan yelled over the chaos, "There's something bigger coming from the cellar—heat signature's massive!"
The ground beneath the farmhouse quaked, and a guttural roar erupted as a towering, mutated zombie emerged, its flesh pulsating with a sickly green glow.
"New plan," Marcus growled. "We hold the line... or we die here."
What do you think?
