Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 570: Story 570: The Lurkers’ Den

The ZETU squad stood frozen in the dim red light of Jenna's flare, the monstrous alpha zombie towering before them. Its glowing red eyes burned with intelligence, and its elongated limbs twitched as if ready to pounce. Behind it, more lurkers crept out from the shadows, their low growls echoing ominously.

"Form up!" Captain Marcus Kane barked, his shotgun aimed squarely at the alpha. "Shield, keep our front locked. Blaze, prep the charges!"

Derek "Shield" Coleman slammed his riot shield into the ground, creating a solid barrier between the team and the advancing horde. The alpha snarled and leapt forward, slamming into the shield with bone-rattling force. Derek grunted but held his ground, his flashlight catching the horrifying details of the creature's sunken, fleshless face.

"Quick Shot, neutralize those creepers on the walls!" Marcus ordered.

Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett perched behind Derek, her sniper rifle taking precise shots. Each bullet found its mark, sending lurkers tumbling from the walls with sickening thuds.

"These things aren't mindless," Riley muttered, lining up another shot. "They're coordinating."

Ethan "Brain" O'Connor, stationed near the rear, typed furiously on his tablet. "You're right. Their heat signatures are clustering toward the central chamber. They're protecting something. Probably the source of the mutation."

Marcus gritted his teeth. "Then we take them out at the source. Blaze, how's it coming?"

"Almost ready!" Jenna "Blaze" Hart shouted, arming a series of charges around the structural support beams. "Once we light this place, it's all coming down!"

As Jenna worked, one of the lurkers darted past the team's line of fire, lunging toward her. Lila "Huntress" Navarro appeared from the shadows, dual pistols blazing. The creature crumpled mid-air, mere inches from Jenna.

"Watch your six," Lila said, reloading smoothly.

"Appreciate it," Jenna replied, her hands never stopping.

The alpha roared, its voice echoing like a demonic wail. It slammed into Derek again, its claws scraping against the shield. Marcus took a step forward, firing his shotgun at point-blank range. The blast tore into the creature's shoulder, but it barely flinched.

"This thing's tougher than it looks!" Marcus growled.

The alpha suddenly veered to the side, its glowing eyes locking onto Ethan. It leapt over Derek's shield with terrifying speed.

"Ethan, move!" Marcus shouted.

Ethan scrambled backward, but the alpha was too fast. Just as it was about to strike, Lila's knife flew through the air, embedding itself in the alpha's eye. It howled in pain, buying Marcus enough time to unleash another shotgun blast, this time to its head. The alpha collapsed with a deafening crash.

"That's how you do it," Marcus said, breathing heavily.

"Charges are set!" Jenna yelled.

"Everyone fall back!" Marcus ordered.

The team retreated as Jenna detonated the charges. The ground shook, and the warehouse began to collapse, burying the remaining lurkers in a fiery inferno.

As the dust settled, Marcus surveyed the destruction. "One nest down," he said. "But there's always more."

The team nodded, ready for whatever came next.
