How I got fuc*ed up

Year 2025, Planet Earth, Italy

In the city of Florence, at 6:00 in the morning, a guy was gettin up after killing the alarm

“Damn, I really need to get rich just to wake up when I feel to and to when this thing starts ringing” 

said the guy, venting his bitterness of the poor mechanical device, which diligently executed his work every day. 

Truth to be told, the young man was not really angered at the alarm but much likely to himself. 

His name was Julius; 182cm (6’) tall, brown hair, brown eyes, 72kg (158 lbs).

He was a med student… With a scholarship. 

Saying so may lead to the belief that God has his favorites and maybe that's the truth, but our protagonist is nothing but forgotten. 

Despite being born with a great body and a quick mind, since his childhood he was tormented with problems of each type. 

From not having money to eat (thankfully, that happened rarely) to not having hot water in the home to being bullied and many other. 

To be fair, he got his scholarship mainly for his financial situation. Julius was grateful for the money even if that meant to do exams on the verge of collapsing due to exhaustion. 

For this reason, his marks were not optimal so, in order to get some more credits, he decided to go to Ginevra in Switzerland, to observe an experiment done at the particle accelerator. 

What was the link between that and his degree? None, but that was the only activity left in the whole university to get credits because the travel was at the student’s expense. Not quite fair, but life is never fair. 

After getting his old glasses on the nose and after eating a quick breakfast, Julius waved off to his parents and ran to the train station… Where the beginning of an 8 hour journey was awaiting him. 

Jokes aside, after 2 trains, a couple of metro stop and a bus, Julius arrived at the reception of the laboratory where a scientist quickly greeted him 

“Hello, I’m Dr. Teslit and we were waiting for you, Julius”

“Hi, I hope i’m not the last one to arrive”

“Well… Technically yes, but you are also the first one”

“What do you mean?”

“How can I say it… You were the only one to sign for this extra curricular activity” said the scientist with a forced smile 

“So, basically, the University staff screwed me big time… But why?”

“Probably to preserve their annual quota of students sent here every year… You know, for the analyst is quite important”

“So, basically they fuc*ed me and my money for their interests?” said Giulio fuming with anger 

“Yes… We are sorry so, in order to make up for that, we are offering you the possibility to observe the experiment next to us scientists… We will try to make it as interesting as possible for you”

“Not that it’s your fault but I hope that there is free food over there… I get my priorities straight”

“There is, don't worry” replied the scientist laughing

Dr. Teslit revealed himself to be an amusing companion, showing Julius everything he could in the laboratory and trying to not let him down. He even ordered hamburgers for him and that was a great plus for the guy. 

While they were eating Giulio asked 

“So, what are we going to do today?”

“We will observe the effects of the collision of two particular particles”

“What particles?”

“The Boson of Higgs, also called God's Particle”

“Sounds great”

“It is” said Dr. Teslit with a sad expression 

“Everything good?”

“Kinda… Actually, this is not the first time that I try to make this particular particle to collide with one of the same kind, but it seems to be impossible… That's why we are alone today, all my colleagues think I waist founds and therefore they leave me alone during this experiments”

“Sorry to hear that.. I was wondering why we were alone”

“Don't worry and sorry for not telling the truth right away… Let’s go to the main laboratory to start the particle accelerator... I hope to make up for my shot comings”

After a few minutes… 

“Both the particles are reaching the critical speed” said Dr.Teslit

“Sounds good to me”

“Now comes the tricky part… Usually the particles avoid each other”

“Why?”

“Because they are not meant to come in contact… It seems like there's a force of repulsion we don't know about”

“Interesting… Seems like I will have something to say to my parents and my girlfriend”

“Ahahaha, I hope so… Wait, what's happening?” said the scientist with a worried look on his face 

“Ehm… Doc, what's happening?” asked Giulio with a worried look, feeling the whole laboratory trembling 

“I… Don't… Know… This was not supposed to happen… I sent the emergency signal to the army”

“What is going on? The Army?... Let me out of this place”

“I’m sorry, but the emergency system already closed all the exit, we are blocked here”

“You are joking”

“Unfortunately no… What is happening now is not something that should even be possible… The two particles collided with each other but, instead of disintegrating, they fused into one particle that is currently phasing between a state of existence and a state of non-existence or of super-existence… I can't really tell… What's worse is that all of this is happening right under our feet”

“Shit”

“Yeah, exactly”

With the minutes passing, the vibrations transformed into a quake so devastating that cracks started appearing all over the laboratory 

“That's incredible… All of the instruments are registering data that will change our fundamental understanding of physics” said Dr. Teslit 

“Well, to be fair, I’m more concerned about survival… Once I get my ass into my bed I will start to think about the rest and how to change the world”

“Ahahahahahaha” the scientist started laughing hysterically, even collapsing to the ground. 

As Julius was about to help him, a voice whispered in his head 

“Don't move”

Paralyzed by the surprise, the guy remained still. Unfortunately a hole opened in the pavement that collapsed. That was the moment that Giulio saw something… Or maybe not. He was not sure nor his mind was able to process what was happening in front of him. The only thing he was sure about was that heat waves were hitting him during what seemed to be an infinite time. 

Just as he was on the verge of a mind break, he heard the same voice whispering, somewhat laughing 

“Have a nice trip” 

And everything went blank
