Chapter 348: Chapter 286: Whirlpool_4

Shen Yuan smiled, “You’ll see in a minute. Oh, right, could you move these two cars to the front of my grandma’s house? I don’t want them to block the bulldozers and excavators coming later.”

“Uh-huh, okay.”

Ji Ya then did as instructed.

Meanwhile, Shen Yuan ran towards his grandma’s house, pushed open the courtyard gate, and shouted, “Grandma! Uncle said he picked some watermelons. Get us a couple of slices to quench our thirst!”

There were quite a few people in the main hall, Uncle’s family, Second Uncle’s family, and even Old Shen and Li Hongjuan were sitting on small wicker chairs, munching on watermelon.

“Yuan, you’ve gotten even more handsome in just a few months!”

...

Aunt laughed.

She, much like Ms. Li, had a fiery temper but a soft heart and never backed down from injustice, which is why she refused to give even ten thousand yuan for the house construction that had been put on hold.

“Hehe, Aunt sure knows how to compliment people. You should see me during the New Year; I bet I’ll have gotten even more handsome.”

Shen Yuan laughed in response.

“You sure are thick-skinned.”

Li Hongjuan rolled her eyes, then continued discussing the next-door neighbor Li Fuqing’s issues, “Big brother, sister-in-law, this dragging on isn’t working. How long will it take at this rate? When in the world will the house be built?”

Uncle Li Baocai kept silent. Mention of this darkened Aunt’s mood, “That damn Li Fuqing, not afraid of tripping and dying in the dark! I won’t give him my ten thousand either way; it’s just too bullying!”

“…”

Both women passionately voiced their opinions. Just then, Grandma came out of the kitchen.

She wore a light blue canvas apron, slightly hunched from age, her hair whitened by the passage of time. Seeing Shen Yuan’s face, her wrinkles relaxed into a warm and loving smile.

“My dear grandson, here you are, come, have some watermelon.”

Grandma handed him a freshly cut slice of watermelon.

Second Uncle muttered from the side, “Mom treats the grandson better than her sons. I just got back and she didn’t cut watermelon for me, but she did for him.”

Second Aunt found it amusing, “Are you jealous of your own nephew now?”

Shen Yuan chuckled, holding the watermelon and started eating, juice smearing around his mouth but not minding as he mumbled, “Thanks, Grandma!”

“Take it easy, there’s more.”

Grandma said kindly and when Shen Yuan had finished, she took his hand and led him into the kitchen. She fished out a yellowed cloth bundle from her crumpled pocket, then pulled out some red paper money from inside.

Shen Yuan estimated there were about ten bills.@@novelbin@@

“Grandma, I really shouldn’t, I’m too old to be taking money from you.”

Shen Yuan remembered how every summer break at Grandma’s, she would pull him aside where no one could see and slip him some money.

Sometimes it was a few hundred, sometimes a thousand.

Shen Yuan was naive back then, always accepting the old lady’s money.

“Shush! Don’t let your uncles hear.”

Grandma made a shushing gesture like a child, “You’re about to graduate, you’ll have plenty of expenses, and you need money for dating too.”

Shen Yuan was bemused, “Grandma, your grandson has money now.”

“You haven’t even graduated, where would you get any money? Just take it, take it.”

Grandma insisted, stuffing it into Shen Yuan’s pocket.

“Alright, I’ll just take 200 then.”

Outmatched by the old lady, Shen Yuan reluctantly took two bills.

Grandma’s watermelon was delicious, so Shen Yuan had another slice, while Li Hongjuan and Aunt continued to curse at Li Fuqing’s ancestors.

Shen Yuan turned to his uncle and asked, “Uncle, how much would it cost to build the wall, is it calculated by square meter or by meter?”

Uncle is in the home renovation business, so after thinking for a bit, he said, “Depends on the type of wall but if it’s a residential garden wall, the labor and materials would just cost 300 per meter.”

Shen Yuan nodded thoughtfully. Unable to contain his curiosity, Uncle blurted out, “What’s up, Yuan? Why are you asking about this?”

“No reason, just asking.”

Shen Yuan waved his hand dismissively. Not long after, there came the loud rumble of machines from the road.

Slapping his thigh, Shen Yuan stepped outside and saw two bulldozers and an excavator heading his way.

The leading bulldozer stopped 20 meters away, and a muscular driver jumped down.

“Is Mr. Shen around?”

“That’s me.”

Shen Yuan nodded.

Meanwhile, Grandma’s brother, Uncle, the entire family, along with Old Shen and Ms. Li, all came out, shocked by the scene.

Shen Yuan pointed towards Li Fuqing’s doorway, “That house over there, use the excavator to go dig up their fence.”

“What?”

The bulldozer driver paused, bewildered. A normal construction, but taking down someone’s home?

Shen Yuan called Ji Ya over and took out 2000 yuan in cash from her purse, handing it over, “This is for the boys to buy cigarettes with, and if anything happens, I’ll handle it myself. Go ahead without worries.”

Hesitating for a moment, the driver finally accepted the 2000 yuan and climbed back into the vehicle.

On one hand, it was a direct order from the boss to the factory manager; on the other hand, it was money not to be missed.

Shen Yuan watched silently as the bulldozer and the excavator, one after the other, drove towards Li Fuqing’s house. He had mentioned to Jin Zhifa that he needed drivers who were daring, so with a little incentive, there was no reason for them not to proceed.

When Li Hongjuan and Shen Heping saw the excavator and the bulldozer heading that way, they rushed over to Shen Yuan, “Yuan, what’s going on?”

Shen Yuan shrugged, “Mom, Dad, just watch.”

Although Li Hongjuan tended to be mouthy, she was quite worried about things escalating. This was about directly digging up someone’s home, which could turn disastrous.

Li Hongjuan opened her mouth, wanting to say more, but Shen Heping stopped her, “It’s fine, Yuan knows what he’s doing.”

“This, this…”

Uncle Li Baocai stammered, unable to complete his words. Were they really driving an excavator to demolish a house? Was his nephew really this fierce?

No sooner did he finish speaking than with a “thud,” the excavator’s bucket began operating and the fragile wall collapsed.

Li Fuqing and his family, hearing the noise, rushed outside panicking.

The middle-aged man, seeing his own wall being dug up, was stupefied, taking a long time to react before shouting loudly, “Who the hell!”

“Stop! Stop!”

He hurried over trying to intervene, but the excavator driver paid no heed, continuing to work silently.

“Who on earth! Who the murderer!”

That middle-aged man was Li Fuqing; his face distorted in rage as he ran out from the yard, only to see the crowd of neighbors watching.

“It’s you murderers!”

Li Fuqing’s eyes were bloodshot, fists clenched tightly.

Then he looked around, seemingly searching for something to grab and fight the crowd with.

Li Fuqing’s wife quickly grabbed him, “Old Li, don’t go; they have too many people. First, call your brother and your cousin over.”

Unhurried, Shen Yuan walked over, took out a stack of bills amounting to about 3000 yuan from Ji Ya’s purse, and threw it on the ground, “My name is Shen Yuan, your neighbors are my grandma and my uncle.”

His gaze was menacing, “Here’s 3000 yuan for the demolition. I’ll tear it down once this month, and then again next month, and the month after. So you damn well better rebuild that wall soon!”
