Chapter 704: 124
The expedition had been ongoing for two weeks now. It may seem long with the number of S-rankers taking part, but the number of S-rankers could not change the fact a Tier 2 Nation is large.
A Tier 2 Nation might not be as large as the Tier above it but it can have territories in hundreds to thousands of square miles. Requiring days if not months to traverse it entire length, much less inspect every part of the territory.
A group of S-rankers could not hope to do such thing. However, they were not alone. The number of adventurers accompanying them allow for better job distribution. The elites, S-rankers and A-rankers will focus on clearing the largest monster encampment and killing the strongest monsters while the B and C-rank adventurers will clear the area once no more powerful monsters are in the area.
Slowly, they get closer to Zell City, the city that supposedly the shield of the nation against the encroachments of monsters.

"A shield, they say." Master Phalin drawled, eying the City from a vantage point that was close to let them see the inside of the city yet far enough for none of them to be able to make use of their attack
Once the second biggest city in Betrum Nation, now, it turned into a monster nest. It's walls were replaced with giant termite mounds, one with an inclination of 90 degrees, making it looked a lot more like regular walls if not for the different coloration and bumps decorating it.
They could also see weird structure, one colored red and purple. Though, they were not completely sure calling it a structure is accurate, with how it seem to gurgle and spew out something from the orifices around it.
"What is that?" one of the duo from Taranis asked, clear disgust in his voice. Master Phalin did not blame them. He too, feel disgusted by what he was seeing.
"I think we might have found how the monsters were created." The bear beastkin answered.
The shock of the what they had seen must have dulled the desire to proclaim humanity supremacy it seem, as the duo from Taranis decided to not react to the one who said it.
Master Phalin was glad, as he did not want to be here for the argument that could follow.
"Let the men rest for the day." He decided, "They are tired from running all the way to Zell City. But make sure the camps are far from the City, and build some fortification in case they decided to launch a night assault."
The other S-rankers nodded, heading towards their collective force to order the building of camps.
Master Phalin sighed, rubbing his forehead as he looked towards Zell City.

"Sir, what is wrong?" Carsco asked, looking at the younger man, who was in deep thought.
"Just a question I been having for a time now." He exclaimed, looking back at the living structure,
"Why did the monsters not attack other nations? They probably could, and win if they attempt such assault, but they did not.
Instead, they remained in the nation before retreating back to Zell City. And that's the weird thing, why didn't they return back to their home turf.
If they enter the Forest, we will be having more trouble in hunting them down. It could even ambush us with the terrain in its favor. It did not make any sense for it to remain outside the city."
The wizened man pondered the words of the younger man and quickly find him correct. Why did it not attempt such thing? The S-rank monster and leader of the swarm would find greater success in battling the adventurers inside the dense foliage.
So, why would it remain outside? As he thought about it, Carsco's mind head towards the worst-case scenario.
'There are more of them.'
-x-
The plan to attack the City for the day had to be postponed in favor of gathering more information. While majority of the A-rank Human Bugs had been identified, there could be more kind out there.
Plus, they lack the knowledge of the terrain and newly formed nest, which could increase casualties on their side.
So, the S-rankers each lead a group of scout of their own, to map out the city and find the best point of entry.
-x-
"Breaking open this section of the wall can give us easy entry, but it might get swarmed quickly." One of the scouts pointed out, as the cartographer started making the map of their section.
"Maybe several entry points, so the monsters would have to split their forces while ours remain whole?" another one suggested.
The rest looked at one another before looking at the S-ranker. The Mage sighed before nodding, giving his approval of the idea.
"Should we detect the number of A-rank monsters, sir?" the braver scout asked. The Mage raised his brows, yet let the man continued,
"It make sense." The scout shrugged, "With the possibility of the monsters being the fusion of Human and Bugs flesh, they could be more A-rankers than we thought."
Hearing the scout's reasoning, the Mage could not disagree. The possibility of the monsters multiplying their elites are a worrying prospect.
"That is true." The Mage admitted, "In that case, I will be the one to look into the City."
Before the scouts could object, the Mage closed his eyes as a purple eye insignia floated above his head. The insignia looked around, before turning towards the City.
It seem to look intently before purple glow flashed towards the City. With it, the insignia 'blinked', as if it is alive and looking at the City with great intent.
After looking at the City, it disappear, leaving only the Mage slightly breathless from his effort.
The scouts surrounded him, but stopped as he thrust his palm in their direction.
"We will group up with the rest. The information is better shared with others."
No one objected
