“Thank you, but I think I don’t need it,” Pei Jinye declined politely.
“Okay, I wish you a pleasant day.”
The conversation came to an end as the elevator doors opened.
When Pei Jinye appeared in the dining hall, Brother Bi hadn’t arrived yet. However, Zhou Ye was surprised to see him, hastily putting down his lunchbox as he exclaimed in astonishment, “Are your injuries healed? Weren’t you told to rest a bit longer?”
“I missed you guys, just came to check on you,” Pei Jinye said with a smile.
Taken aback, Zhou Ye replied with a smile, “You’re too kind. What do you want to eat? It’s on me.”
...
Pei Jinye shook his head, gesturing to the lunchbox he was holding, “Brought it from home, let’s share.”
Zhou Ye, catching the scent, eagerly helped open the lunchbox, and immediately the fragrant aroma spread out.
Zhou Ye’s eyes lit up as he said, “Did your aunt make this? Wow, it smells amazing.”
“Eat up, I brought enough for three,” Pei Jinye responded with a laugh.
“I appreciate it, then I won’t hold back,” Zhou Ye said with a chuckle, grabbing a steaming hot bun and stuffing it into his mouth, which immediately made him howl in pain. He wanted to spit it out but felt it would be unseemly, so he had to wolf it down with a distorted face.
“You can be heard howling all the way from afar… Jinye, you’re here.” Brother Bi was startled to see Pei Jinye but then broke into a welcoming smile, “Are your wounds healed?”
“All good now,” Pei Jinye indicated the lunchboxes on the table, “Brought some home-cooked food, Brother Bi, you should try some.”
“I won’t stand on ceremony then.”
Brother Bi smiled heartily, glanced at Zhou Ye’s grimacing face, carefully picked up a piece with his chopsticks, and gently tasted it. Then he gave Pei Jinye a thumbs-up.
“Awesome!”
Pei Jinye chuckled softly, eating leisurely.
“Any new assignments at the squad recently?”
“No real assignments, just the same old routine, scheduled patrols,” Brother Bi said offhandedly with a smile. “On normal days, you can’t even hear a gunshot. Meanwhile, I’ve heard there have been quite a few conflicts next door—they’ve got their hands full.”
“I saw the special forces team urgently heading out this morning; feels like another big incident. Hope it’s not related to us,” Zhou Ye said indistinctly while eating.
Brother Bi frowned slightly but said nothing.
Just then, the cafeteria’s television suddenly broadcast the news of Central Continent Councilor Cui Min being assassinated and killed.
The entire cafeteria fell into complete silence.
Nearly everyone stopped eating and stared blankly at the news on the television.
The news broadcast lasted a full three minutes, and the canteen was silent as a grave.
It was not until the next moment when the news switched to another topic that the suffocating tension in the cafeteria gradually dispersed.
Somebody said incredulously, “This must be fake, right…?”
Immediately, someone else retorted angrily, “Fake my ass! This is from the Federation Headquarters! It means the news has been confirmed!”
“My God, Elder Cui has been assassinated… who did it?” someone exclaimed involuntarily.
“Could it be the work of the Old Gods Association? I heard they’ve killed a lot of high officials in the Western Continent…”
“Elder Cui was assassinated, so who will take over the Central Continent Councilor position?”
“Could it be given to Mr. Han?”
“Han Sen’s greatest support was Elder Cui; with this assassination, he can’t escape the connection either!”
The canteen seemed to plunge into a boiling frenzy of discussion, with a heated atmosphere spreading throughout.
Pei Jinye slightly turned his head, the sunlight outside the window at the moment was a bit too harsh. He always kept his facial expressions consistent with the people around him, so he wouldn’t stand out under the surveillance of the electronic eyes.
“Hiss!” Zhou Ye took a sharp breath, “It’s hard to imagine, that old gentleman actually… met with this end. He seemed like he was going to retire this year.”
“For high-level figures like him, it’s difficult to have a peaceful landing.” Brother Bi sighed, “He’s been in charge of Central State for so many years, he’s made many enemies. A lot of people have been thinking about troubling him after his retirement, otherwise he wouldn’t have kept dragging his feet, still not choosing to step down…”
Zhou Ye fell silent for a while, “Could it really be the work of the Old Gods Association? I heard that the organization has been very irritable lately, waging war with the Western Continent for so many days with no sign of settling down. Are they planning to bring the flames of war to our Central State?”
Zhou Ye seemed a bit pessimistic.
Brother Bi glanced at him, “I thought what you were worried about was Star Ring taking full control of Central State, affecting your perfect attendance bonus.”
As soon as money was mentioned, the glum momentum in Zhou Ye’s heart immediately dispersed, and he laughed dryly, “That won’t happen. There have been many councilors assassinated, it’s not enough for Star Ring to personally take over. I reckon, in the coming period, Central State is going to be in chaos… Are the Central State tycoons going to reshuffle the deck?”
“Who knows.”
The breakfast this morning seemed exceptionally long.
It even delayed everyone’s training time, if not for the appearance of high-ranking individuals like Ms. Xu Jing… the conversation probably would have continued.
However, Pei Jinye was called away on short notice.
“Elder Cui has had an accident.”
On the way leaving the Investigation Team’s Base in the car, Ms. Xu Jing and Pei Jinye sat side by side in the back seat, she looked meaningfully towards Pei Jinye.
“I’m very sorry,” Pei Jinye apologized… If there had been enough time, he could have burned the old gentleman himself.
Ms. Xu Jing obviously didn’t understand his implication, and shook her head slightly, “This matter might have some impact on you as well.”
Pei Jinye looked over.
Ms. Xu Jing, mistaking his lack of knowledge about the depth of the situation, smiled with an indescribable meaning, “The old gentleman loved to recruit talent, and from the outside world’s point of view, you have already been branded with Cui Min’s label… But you don’t have to worry, after all, your track record is there, you’re not too deeply involved with him, so the upcoming purge won’t get to you.”
Pei Jinye raised his eyebrows slightly, “Purge?”
“Maybe I’m being too blunt,” Ms. Xu Jing said, unconcerned, “The elder had also been a domineering figure in his day, who knows how many people he offended. There are plenty who hold grudges against him. Now that he’s been assassinated, the Federation will only posthumously honor him, but the Cui Family… they won’t receive any extra consideration… so the Cui Family will quickly fall from the ranks of the first-tier families… As for what will happen next, it depends on whether the Cui Family can call upon those few from above.”
Pei Jinye lowered his eyes and said nothing.
With his LV5 intelligence, he was very clear about the consequences of doing this… and of course, clearer still that Star Ring wouldn’t intervene in the chaos of Central State.
The situation was about to become more chaotic.
That was exactly what Pei Jinye wanted.
He needed to divert more attention away from himself.
Ms. Xu Jing’s voice came at that moment, “We’ve arrived.”
Only then did Pei Jinye notice that he had been brought to a manor.
The manor was extremely luxurious.
Back when Pei Jinye was with the Jiang family, Zhong Xuan had mentioned to him… this place’s land was worth its weight in gold, and ordinary people simply couldn’t afford it.
Who owned the manor castle was unknown, as they hadn’t made an appearance.
It was just a middle-aged man in a butler’s suit who, upon seeing Ms. Xu Jing, nodded slightly and passed over a sealed kraft paper bag, then bowed and retreated.
Ms. Xu Jing handed the kraft paper bag to Pei Jinye, “I don’t know why Han Sen holds you in such high regard. This is the safety net he arranged for you as soon as the old gentleman got into trouble. With the contents of this bag, neither the Cui Family nor their enemies will trouble you.”
Pei Jinye was somewhat surprised.
Han Sen…
He lowered his gaze.
He slowly opened the kraft paper bag.
What do you think?
