“Wait,” Zeng Shiyuo suddenly spoke up.
Zeng Ziming had almost reached the kitchen doorway when he heard this and quickly stopped, turning his head to look at his father.
“Did you go into the kitchen before we came back?” asked Zeng Shiyuo.
Zeng Ziming shook his head, “After being woken up by the knocking, I’ve been sitting in the living room the whole time, I haven’t gone anywhere.”
Zeng Shiyuo turned his gaze to his wife, “Xiaoxia, did we check the windows before going to bed last night?”
“I didn’t check; we are so high up, what thief would dare to climb up here?” Tian Xiaoxia also shook her head.
“Now… it’s not just thieves we have to worry about,” Zeng Shiyuo glanced at her.
As soon as he got home, he had closed all the doors and windows and checked them once, so Zeng Shiyuo was certain that the kitchen window was closed at the moment because it was he who had just closed it.
If no one had touched the window last night, then it meant that this window had been open all along until he came back and closed it.
“Should I… go in?” Zeng Ziming stood there, hesitating.
The kitchen had a sliding door, which at the moment was only half-open, not allowing a full view of the inside.
“Close the door; don’t go in yet,” Zeng Shiyuo instructed, erring on the side of caution.
As he spoke these words, the couple seated in the living room direction simultaneously saw the kitchen’s sliding door suddenly move a bit, pushed outward slightly, making the gap it was opened wider.
“Something’s not right.”
“Be careful!”
After a moment of stunned silence, both shouted a warning at the same time.
Since Zeng Ziming was turned away, he was sidewise to the kitchen entrance when the couple saw his clothing tighten around his waist, and he levitated as if he was grabbed and lifted by something invisible, which sent Zeng Ziming into a panic, kicking his legs frantically.
This sudden encounter terrified Zeng Ziming. He struggled in a frenzy, and as he turned his head, he saw an extremely gaunt yet at least two meters tall naked man standing behind him, and he was lifted by one hand of this man.
This tall, thin man’s skin was a deathly gray, his torso and limbs were exceedingly scrawny while his bones were long and large. The disproportionality of his physique was evident at a glance and extremely bizarre.
One of his eye sockets was empty, and in the other, where there was an eye, it seemed like the eyeball was barely hanging on.
Though the man was naked, he had an abundance of hair that was dirty, unkempt, and shaggy, and it would occasionally brush against Zeng Ziming’s face as he struggled. The tall, thin man held him tightly, not letting him break free.
Even as Zeng Ziming struggled, he felt as if his heart was going numb, and his strength was dwindling.
Finally, Zeng Shiyuo and Tian Xiaoxia snapped to it, realizing that a strangeness had targeted their son, and just like the one that had targeted them before, it was invisible to everyone else except its target.
Both rushed forward and reached out as if they grabbed onto an invisible arm or something.
Zeng Shiyuo was terrified, but seeing that his son seemed to be suffocating, he couldn’t be bothered with his fear and forcefully pried whatever he had grabbed.
Tian Xiaoxia didn’t know what she held on to but was also forcefully pulling, while continuously screaming.
The thing finally let go, and Zeng Ziming fell to the ground, gasping deeply for air. As he regained his senses, he crawled forward frantically, while looking back in terror.
In his gaze, that tall, gaunt horror of a man kicked Zeng Shiyuo in the stomach, sending him flying, and with a sweep of his arm, he flung Tian Xiaoxia aside and strode toward him once more.
Utterly petrified, Zeng Ziming tumbled and scrambled towards the living room door that was closest to him, flung it open, and dashed out.
The tall, thin man didn’t run but followed at an unhurried pace. Once out of the living room and in the stairwell corridor, he followed the direction in which Zeng Ziming had fled downstairs, and soon the sound of footsteps faded away.
In truth, the tall, gaunt man’s footsteps were very light because he was barefoot.
It took quite some time for Zeng Shiyuo to catch his breath. Clutching his stomach, he stood up, while Tian Xiaoxia stumbled to the door, leaning out anxiously but feeling utterly helpless.
“What do we do? Our son has run off, and that strangeness must be chasing him,” said Tian Xiaoxia, turning back to look at Zeng Shiyuo.
Zeng Shiyuo came over, grabbed his phone from the sofa, and glanced at the coffee table in front of it. His son’s phone was still there, untouched.
“I’m going out to find him. You lock the door and if necessary, hide in the bedroom, lock all doors and windows, and if I come back I will call you to open the door,” he said.
After dropping these words, Zeng Shiyuo ran desperately downstairs.
After his figure disappeared at the corner of the stairs, Tian Xiaoxia looked left and right in the dimly lit stairwell, shivering involuntarily and quickly closing the living room door.
Standing inside the house, even with the door shut, she felt no sense of safety after their recent encounter. She glanced around, took her purse, and tiptoed to the master bedroom, where she closed and locked the door behind her.
Still not quite reassured, she went to the window and locked all the doors and windows leading to the balcony. Although the room was well-lit, she still turned the bedroom light to its brightest setting.
After doing all this, Tian Xiaoxia felt a bit more settled, but her heart was still racing. She slowly sat at the edge of the bed, lost in her thoughts as she faced the window, looking out at the scenery.
She held on tightly to her phone, with no intention of letting go.
Five minutes later, at the other end of the large bed where Tian Xiaoxia sat, a purple dwarf man slowly crawled out from under the bed.
