Chapter 2264: Chapter 2265: Lin Yi Gets Schooled

“Started arguing, huh?”

Lin Yi’s eyebrows knit together, his expression turning unpleasant.

The person Wang Dongdong referred to as Aunty Wang, named Wang Lanzi, had been at the orphanage for nearly twenty years and was practically like a mother to him—calling her half a mom wouldn’t be an overstatement.

Although he had been beaten by her, Lin Yi’s feelings for her were still deep.

He also knew her character well—a hot-tempered auntie from the Northeast, really a good person.

“I’ll go take a look.”

...

Lin Yi put down his chopsticks, and Ji Qingyan stood up as well; Ning Yue and Qu Xuanhe followed suit.

The four of them went to the neighboring room, where the other children of the orphanage were having their meal.

Whenever Lin Yi came back, the other aunties would always eat with the children first, and after they finished, they would then go and have a chat with Lin Yi.

As soon as he entered the room, Lin Yi saw Wang Lanzi grabbing Liu Lei’s arm, saying:

“It’s already so late; where are you going? Your brother and sister-in-law are back. Stay and chat with them.”

“They’re not leaving for the next few days, we can talk anytime. I’ve got something urgent today; stop pulling on me.”

Liu Lei was a bit impatient and still trying to break free from Wang Lanzi.

“That won’t do either. It’s already this hour and you want to go out? Instead of that, you should stay at home and study more, memorize a few more words. You have the university entrance exams in a year; what will you do in the future if you don’t get into college?”

“Getting into college also doesn’t mean much.” Liu Lei said:

“I know a guy whose dad never went to school, and now all the people he employs are college graduates; I find it really embarrassing just looking at them.”

“You child, why do you always talk nonsense? Do you even understand that nowadays…”

“Aunty Wang…”

Lin Yi called out, walking over to Wang Lanzi and patting her on the shoulder, “Let me handle this. You go on and eat.”

Seeing Lin Yi, Wang Lanzi breathed a sigh of relief and, hands on her hips, said, “Please deal with him quickly. He’s making me so angry, even more disobedient than you were.”

Lin Yi chuckled, “He’s old enough; don’t worry too much about them.”

With that, Wang Lanzi left, and Lin Yi stood in front of Liu Lei.

The latter’s attitude was no longer as arrogant as before upon seeing Lin Yi.

In the entire orphanage, Lin Yi and Wu Feiyue still held some authority; the other children would be scared when they saw either of them.

“What do you have to do out tonight?” Standing in front of Liu Lei, Lin Yi asked.

“Going to meet my friend.” Liu Lei cocked his head, not daring to look at Lin Yi, “We’ve made plans. I have to go.”

“And then? What are you going to do after meeting your friend?” Lin Yi continued:

“Go out and spend money? Trying to act like a big shot in society? To make others envious and satisfy your vanity?”

Liu Lei was speechless for a moment because Lin Yi had hit the nail on the head.

Lin Yi could say this with such accuracy mainly because they had been through the same phase as Liu Lei.

Who hasn’t gone through that adolescent phase?

“Just don’t worry about me; I know what I’m doing.”

“What exactly do you know?” Lin Yi was on the verge of laughing. “Do you really think that fighting a few times can make you a big shot in society?”

Saying this, Lin Yi felt around his lower back and took out his self-defense dagger.

“Ever seen this thing before? Do you dare to use it?”

Seeing Lin Yi’s dagger, Liu Lei was a bit surprised, but then he disdainfully said:

“Brother, why do you still carry stuff like that? It’s so outdated.”

“Outdated?”

“This is ancient history; it’s leftovers from your generation. We don’t value that nowadays.”

Liu Lei was a bit self-satisfied, looking disdainful.

He acted as if Lin Yi in front of him belonged to the ancient past.

Lin Yi, too, didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

It seemed the homework wasn’t enough.

“Well, alright, since you look down on these things, why don’t you take me out for a spin? It’s a good opportunity for me to see this society of yours.”

“No, please don’t come with me,” Liu Lei refused. “This is our own business; having an adult tag along is too embarrassing.”

“What’s embarrassing about that? It’s a perfect chance for me to see what’s going on in the world.”

“That’s not okay either,” Liu Lei said. “Anyway, I have some reputation now, and I can’t be bringing you along.”

“Then you shouldn’t leave, and you might as well drop out of school,” Lin Yi said. “Even though I’m not in Yang City, your elder brother can still take care of you.”

Hearing this, Liu Lei became anxious.

“Why? I’m old enough; why do you all still have to control what I do?”

“I didn’t say I’ll control you; I just want to go with you to take a look,” Lin Yi said:

“As long as you take me with you today, the orphanage won’t bother you anymore. You can do whatever you want.”

“Really?”

“I mean what I say.”

“Alright then, I’ll take you out for a tour, let you see the big scene,” Liu Lei said excitedly:

“But we agreed, if I take you out, from now on, you guys can’t control me anymore.”

“Do I look like I’d go back on my word?”

“Then let’s go now.”

Liu Lei was excited. He didn’t hate the orphanage, and in fact, his feelings for it were quite deep.

He just reached that rebellious age, where adolescent angst flared up.

Lin Yi knew this all too well.

“Mom, you guys stay at home. I’ll go out for a bit with him and we’ll be back soon.”

“Be careful when you go out.”

With Lin Yi accompanying him, Wang Cuiping wasn’t too worried.

Lin Yi nodded, then after giving a few instructions to Ji Qingyan, he left with Liu Lei.

“You can follow him, just don’t create trouble; you’re on a mission,” Ji Qingyan whispered.

“Don’t worry.”

“Go on then.”

Ji Qingyan touched her hair, seeing Lin Yi being so patient for the first time.

But the kids nowadays really seemed a bit tough to control; they even dared to challenge Lin Yi.

The two of them left the orphanage and went to a nearby bus stop to wait for the bus.

This scene was both unfamiliar and familiar to Lin Yi, and a smile unconsciously appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Back when he went to school, he used to ride the bus every day, and sometimes, to save a buck, he’d even trek a long distance back home on foot.

But over these past years, let alone the bus, he hadn’t even taken the subway.

“Brother, why are you laughing so mysteriously?”

“I’ve never seen a big shot in society take the bus before.”

“I’m broke right now.”

With no outsiders around and only Lin Yi left, Liu Lei relaxed quite a bit and spoke more freely.

“How can you be so unabashedly prideful about not having money? You act as if you’re in the right.”

“But these things really don’t matter.” Liu Lei presumptuously said:

“As long as I have abilities, as long as I’m tough enough, followers will come flocking to me in the future. How could I worry about not making money then?”

“Okay, I’ll see today just what kind of abilities you guys have; it’s also a good chance to broaden my horizons.”

“Just watch; we are not the same as in your time,” Liu Lei spoke as if he was laying down the law:

“Just wait and see, both you and my brother are outdated now.”
