Chapter 30: Dead
"Tch," I clicked my tongue and quickly drew out my katana, the sound of metal colliding with metal resounding within the forest.
Good thing I invested a lot in agility, as I could keep up with their movement even without the use of mana.
Left.
I muttered, then glanced to my left, where a sword made entirely of darkness was headed straight for my neck.
"Not so fast," I said and moved faster than it, slashing off its head.
Huh?
No blood.
"How is this possible? He possesses no mana!" screamed the leader in disbelief, but I wasn't about replying to him since I had my hands full with this… I don't even know at this point. Are these even human?
"Right," I muttered as I blocked an attack, then kicked the figure and ducked, dodging two swords aimed for my chest.
Damn these bastards!
Why do they keep coming?!
Is there no end to them?!
"Shit!" I cursed, then somersaulted as I was almost caught in a trap.
However, even in the air, I wasn't safe from their constant onslaught as three more shadows suddenly appeared mid-air, one aiming their shadow sword for my neck, the other for my gut, and the last targeting Ellie.
Damn.
Fighting with this bitch on my shoulder is so goddamn strenuous, and the damned system won't give me any notification regarding the completion of my quest.
Tch.
I guess that only means I have to see this through till we're out of this ancient world.
Since I wasn't able to freely move in mid-air, countering multiple people at once was impossible, especially given my condition of having a burden slowing me down.
So I did something… unconventional.
"Ahh," I groaned as I pushed Ellie off me a little higher up into the air.
I was also able to move down a bit faster, making them miss their mark. Then I sprang back up the moment my feet touched the ground, my katana tightly held as I sliced them all in a single spin. However, it seemed I had miscalculated as one of the shadows, somehow pivoted up and moved towards Ellie even after my little stunt.
Damn it.
I cursed as I fell to the ground, then looked up and found the figure holding onto her as it made its way back to the man.
Shit.
I messed up big time.
I leaned forward a little more, favoring my right leg, as I took a deep breath, holding the hilt of my katana.
I looked forward; the ones I had sliced through were reattaching themselves in a strangely disconcerting way.
"This concludes it. They aren't human."
I noted, then looked at the leader who now had Ellie levitating close to him, a huge hand of shadow holding onto her.
Huh?
Why isn't he attempting to kill her?
Wait…
Could these bastards be from the elven kingdom?!
No…
… That's not right.
It's probably humans, as elves rarely possess shadow affinity.
Come to think of it, from the conversation I witnessed between the director of the adventurer's guild in Arten and Ellie, it's safe to say he won't let any harm come to her. Could it be…
… Crap!
I quickly realized who these people were and why they were after me.
"The royal household… and Arenford."
With that thought, I stomped the ground, then shot forward like a bullet.
I made a quick draw, slashing about three of them, before I stomped the ground and shot straight for the leader.
Though I am confident they won't hurt her, I still can't be too careful. I have to make sure she's with me so the system doesn't play any funny games with me.
I got close to him in a matter of seconds. However, just as my katana sailed towards his direction…
… What?!
… WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!
Something grabbed me. But what shocked me to the nerve was how it caught me so easily, even at such a speed.
A huge hand made entirely of shadow.
"Damn it."
Clank!
My katana dropped to the ground as the hand of shadow pressed both my hands so tightly that I could feel my bones crack.
"ARGH," I grunted in pain as I applied all my strength to escape its hold…
… but it was futile.
I was still too weak.
"Hehe," a hollow chuckle escaped my lips as I realized how foolish I had been.
I was still too weak.
I got too confident.
Too arrogant.
"Yes… that's how it should be," I heard and saw the figure gazing at me. I felt tired; it was as though the shadows were draining every ounce of energy I had left.
"Let… me… go," I forced, feeling my consciousness waver.
-SHINK!
"Haa," I gasped as I felt a sharp pain tear through my gut.
"Ha…ha…ha…" My breathing turned erratic.
I looked down, and I saw it.
Blood.
So much blood.
-SHINK!
-SHINK!
-SHINK!
-SHINK!
-SHINK!
-SHINK!
And just like that, I was hacked all over.
Is…
… this it?
Is this how it all ends?
"Ah… AHHHA… AHHHHHHHHHH!" I screamed in unbearable pain and agony as they all pulled out their weapons at the same time.
I was done from the onset.
There was no way I could win against these creatures.
I got too confident.
"Shhh," I heard and looked up with blurry eyes to find the man with an amused expression. "Don't worry… Your death will bring about a new era. Isn't that something to be proud of?!" He laughed like the maniac he was.
I, on the other hand, could feel my awareness slipping.
I should have never gotten so trusting of my own abilities. From the onset, I was nothing without mana.
Without mana, I was always meant to be the loser.
"Hehehe," I chuckled bitterly.
Truly, my life…
… never had a good moment.
I am sorry…
… Stem.
Guess your sacrifice amounted to nothing.
I… was always…
… going to lose.
