Chapter 420 The Story of the Monarch Butterfly

"Promoting the government to establish laws regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides, or setting up conservation areas for monarch butterflies in the wilderness, was nearly impossible. However, researchers created some models and found that increasing the food for monarch butterflies in cities could serve to protect them."

The food of monarch butterflies is tropical milkweed, a plant rich in sap. People thought that perhaps they could, with far less money, send a packet of tropical milkweed seeds to each resident of a certain area, asking them to scatter these seeds in the city's small gardens, in their own backyards, or in the wastelands.

This network of tropical milkweed could change the fate of the monarch butterflies."

This process had its failures, but also many dramatic successes. People discovered that the idea was indeed viable; after sending the tropical milkweed seeds to the residents, gardens of the plant began to appear one after another across the city."

Some worthless wastelands became more beautiful urban landscapes because of these flowers, attracting more wildlife, enhancing the quality of residential communities, and even drawing commercial investment."

Hence, cities might not necessarily be places with poor biodiversity. Perhaps in the future, cities could serve as habitats for the protection of key species. Although urban green spaces are small, the scale of many organisms is also small."

Fang Ye memorized this story in his heart, "I think this is a good example, thank you, teacher."

Wang Yan added, "The monarch butterfly population has declined quite a bit in the last two years, reaching new lows, and this year's situation seems particularly bad, possibly related to the wildfires in the United States."

Fang Ye felt helpless; with global warming in recent years and the frequent occurrences of extreme weather, the impacts on butterflies were lethal. Plus, the use of pesticides and herbicides meant that planting tropical milkweed in the city might be a drop in the ocean."

The effectiveness aside, such attempts were still very positive, enabling visitors to understand a way of coexisting with animals, aware that symbiosis can be a mutually beneficial affair."

In the future, when building city animal exhibition areas, they could consider raising monarch butterflies and creating a garden landscape."

Zoos shouldn't only display star animals like tigers and giant pandas but should also guide visitors to pay attention to inconspicuous creatures like insects, whose roles are important and even harder to survey and research regarding their population status."

He chatted with Wang Yan about other matters as well."

Wang Yan was not only a researcher but, as a teacher at the school, quite a talker too."

He shared his rough understanding of conservation biology, that it's about seeing the changes in the world and the potential threats and risks before others do."

One of his tasks for the semester was to conduct a survey to determine the distribution and habits of common raccoon dogs in Linhai City."

Last night, when he saw the raccoon dog, he was not only struck by its courage and spirit of exploration but also faintly sensed the potential conflict it represented in the future."

In another ten or eight years, the raccoon dog might have completely adapted to the city, with changes in its habits, possibly becoming like the raccoons in North America."

At that time, there might be issues with human-animal conflicts, such as parasites and diseases brought by the raccoon dogs. So conducting some preliminary research could also prepare for the future."

Fang Ye mentioned that because of the incident with the milk tea wild boar, he had placed some infrared cameras around the villages near Linhai City, and Wang Yan and his team could analyze and study the data collected by these cameras."

It wasn't only about collaboration in scientific research but also about investing money in Wang Yan's team."

Although they had only talked for half a day, he felt that Wang Yan was indeed worthy of being a researcher at Xinghe University, as scientific work should be left to the professionals."

Wang Yan was delighted!

What else could worry a scientist more than funding? He hadn't expected Fang Ye to be so generous, starting to discuss money so soon after they met."

Before their meeting, the friends who had made the introduction said that Fang Ye was a wealthy second-generation individual who personally established a zoo with high standards, and that he was very humble, always asking questions, unlike some ignorant playboys."

Today's meeting proved just that."@@novelbin@@

Wang Yan also had a good impression of Fang Ye, and the two enjoyed their conversation."

...

The zoo has become much livelier recently.

The golden snub-nosed monkeys and Japanese macaques that were introduced have arrived at the zoo and have entered the quarantine phase.

The enclosures have been almost completed, as the construction team does not take holidays; they continued working diligently even through the New Year!

Once the quarantine is finished, probably by March, they can be put on display.

The Reptiles and Amphibians Exhibit has also introduced some new animals, like the king cobra, for example.

The new animals have brought in a substantial amount of green leaf coins, which timely replenished funds for the ongoing construction of the elephant enclosure.

The elephant exhibition area is quite large, and it is expected to be completed by April; this speed is already exceptionally fast.

The black panther enclosure is under construction and should also be finished by April; the jaguar is currently en route to the zoo.

Since we already have one black panther, we didn't especially buy another; the male we've introduced has a normal color pattern.

The leopard enclosures can be smaller, mainly providing them with trees they can climb.

In contrast, the hot spring hotel, in order to save green leaf coins, opted to pay a proper construction crew to build it, resulting in an incredibly slow progress; it is expected to be completed by May, and the decoration might take about a month, so it could officially open in June.

Besides patrolling the zoo, Fang Ye would also visit the quarantine area to see the newly arrived golden snub-nosed monkeys and bond with the black panther, stop by the veterinary hospital to check on the lion cubs, and drop into Mizzle's birthing room to visit the wolf pups.

...

Quarantine area.

Fang Ye chatted with the staff for a bit, inquiring about the animals' conditions, then approached the enclosure of the golden snub-nosed monkeys.

Two golden snub-nosed monkeys were squatting on a log in the middle of their cage, grooming each other's fur; another one sat nearby as a smaller one wandered around them.

Fang Ye watched with great interest!

The head and limbs of the golden snub-nosed monkeys were a reddish-brown, their belly fur was snow white, tinged with a hint of pale gold.

The fur on their backs was a golden yellow, long and flowing, giving them the appearance reminiscent of a beggar from martial arts novels, wearing layers of tattered clothes ripped into long strips.

However, compared to the beggars, the golden fur of the snub-nosed monkeys was undoubtedly far more magnificent!

And unlike the unkempt beards and long hair of the beggars giving them a dirty and messy look, the snub-nosed monkeys had round and chubby heads.

This time, four golden hair monkeys were introduced; in the middle of the enclosure, the biggest and most robust was the leader, Big Treasure, with his wife Yaya grooming him at the moment. Another, Leelee, was also one of Big Treasure's wives.

There was also a one-year-old little snub-nosed monkey, Little Precious, who was wandering around, looking quite lively.

Golden snub-nosed monkeys are also quite rare animals; introducing four at once is indeed a grand gesture.
