Chapter 478 The Groundhog Basking in the Sun
The car was moving slowly!
Fang Ye was looking at the scenery, occasionally chatting with Duoji, "Duoji, your Chinese is quite fluent, isn't it?"
Duoji laughed, "I've worked outside for a few years, as a chef in Shenzhen."
"Wow, that's impressive! Shenzhen is a big city."
Fang Ye curiously asked, "Eh, then why did you come back? Do you earn more here?"
Duoji thought for a moment and said, "In terms of making money, of course, working outside earns more. But there's a different feeling to earning money at home compared to outside.
Outside, I was working for someone else, and in a bustling big city, I felt I couldn't stay there, just a passerby.
Back home, there's a greater sense of belonging, working for myself, and staying here makes me a bit happier, I suppose. Plus, being able to help the development of my hometown and make a contribution brings satisfaction and a sense of achievement."
Fang Ye gave a thumbs up and sincerely admired, "Having such awareness to contribute to your hometown is truly noble."

Duoji smiled a bit shyly, "Hehe, it's not about being noble, it's just personal preference."
The road became more and more desolate.
Lan Li patted Fang Ye's shoulder and pointed out the car window, "Look, look!"
By the roadside, there was a large flock of Tibetan sheep with long wool. Fang Ye lowered the car window a little bit.
"Baa~"
"Baa~~~"
"Baa~~"
A mix of sheep baaing together, some deep and robust, some like trumpets, some like burps, and the lambs' tender voices. Their calls were far more authentic than a panda's.
The continuous sheep's baaing mixed with the pleasing sound of jingling bells made for an inexplicably joyful mood.
As the car slowly passed by, Fang Ye and the others watched the sheep from inside, and the sheep also curiously looked up at them.
One sheep, under Fang Ye's gaze, even pooped out a bunch of pellet-like droppings.
The shepherd, accompanied by a dog, came down from the distant hillside. The sheep started to follow him upon seeing their herder, and the others, although not understanding why, also followed their companion, and the whole flock began to move slowly.
The sky over the plateau was exceptionally azure, simple and transparent, like a piece of blue silk hanging above.
The clouds were also very clean, like chunks of white cotton, leisurely floating in the sky, as though one could pluck a piece down with ease.
The clouds above drifted along, accompanying the movement of the sheep on the ground, creating a wonderfully harmonious beauty.
Fang Ye took out his camera and "click-click" snapped a couple of photos.
The car continued on.
Traveling on the road, the mountain rocks seemed carved by knives and axes, steep cliffs radiating a reddish-brown hue under the sunlight, the scenery was magnificent and grand, and distant sacred mountains were enshrouded in mist, appearing now hidden, now visible, vast and mystical.
Sanjiangyuan had many beautiful Danxia landform landscapes, composed of red sandstone and conglomerate rocks.
Admiring such sights often made people exclaim in wonder, and their moods became cheerful.
After a while, Lan Li excitedly called out, looking through the car window, "Ah, ah, look, look, marmots!"
On the open meadows to the right, a few critters were unabashedly basking in the sun!
It was hard to tell if there were three or two chubby marmots, with their bodies half-hidden in their burrows, only revealing their heads.
One lay on the grass, its face moving, as if it were nibbling on something.
Another stood out boldly, paws clutched in front of its belly, in a far-gazing stance.
Looking at them, Fang Ye couldn't help but laugh, "They're indeed quite amusing!"
Marmots are a common name, but their formal name is groundhog, and they are also considered internet-famous animals.
They became widely known because of that very popular video.
In a background surrounded by mountains, a marmot stands upright, hesitates for a moment, then suddenly opens its mouth wide, thrusts its head forward, and lets out a rough "ah ah ah ah" roar, as if it encountered something extremely frustrating and was shouting out loud, a truly heart-wrenching cry.
This roar, combined with the marmot's quaint appearance, is absolutely bewitching; it was turned into many viral videos and spread widely as a result.
In fact, groundhogs don't really make that sound at all!
That noise was synthesized, just a comedic video.
Groundhogs have a certain social nature and live in groups. They thrive in environments that are generally flat and open, which is why there will always be a sentinel on guard, defending against foxes and wolves, birds of prey from the skies, and even snow leopards and such.
When they spot danger, they emit a short and sharp "ji ji ji ji" alarm call.
That is the real sound of groundhogs.
As vehicles pass by, the groundhogs living by the road seem to have gotten used to it, not scampering back to their burrows as if facing a formidable enemy, but continuing to bask in the sun, with the watchful groundhog turning its head to look elsewhere after the cars go by.
Although marmots look quite cute and playful, much like capybaras exuding a certain honest charm, they may carry the plague, which makes them quite a dangerous animal to humans.
Now, when people travel, some even seek close contact with marmots, touching them, feeding them, using their mouths to feed them, snapping photos to show off.
This is purely courting death, no different from those live-streamers who handle many-banded kraits.
Upon seeing the marmots, Fang Ye snapped photos while simultaneously giving Lan Li a rundown.
Lan Li covered her mouth and laughed, "Although I know that's not how marmots really sound, I can't help but imagine that bewitched 'ah ah ah ah' noise when I see them."
Duoji thought they were just a tourist couple and was about to offer some explanations and remind them not to touch the marmots, but then he realized Fang Ye had already explained everything.
"Boss, you seem to know quite a lot," he said.@@novelbin@@
Fang Ye replied with a smile, "Just bits and pieces, I run a zoo."
Duoji was impressed, "Wow, that's amazing!"
Driving on the mountain roads through the canyon, the road started getting bumpy!
Below the canyon, a wide river meandered by, with sunlight glinting off the waves and some un-melted ice chunks floating on the water creating bright reflections.
The beautiful blue blended with dark red, making the colors rich and vibrant, as if they were dyed with a palette.
Qunan drove the car carefully, as there were quite a few bends on this side. If you go too fast, you could end up in a ditch and not be able to get out.
"Bear with the road a bit longer," Duoji said to Fang Ye, "it used to be worse, very muddy and difficult to drive on. You could easily get stuck in the mud. Now that it's been repaired, it's actually a lot better."
Lan Li, on the other hand, was feeling a bit queasy from the bumpy ride.
Leaning on Fang Ye, she spoke in a low, worried voice, "I feel uncomfortable, dizzy... I'm not sure if it's car sickness or altitude sickness."
Angsai is situated at an elevation of three to four thousand meters, and it's best for tourists to spend some time in a lower altitude place like Xining first, getting used to it for a few days before coming over, gradually acclimatizing.
Fang Ye had opted for the simpler approach, confident that he had a solution.
He took out a bottle of spiritual water from his backpack and a pill, "This medicine is for altitude sickness. Take one."
While spiritual water isn't exactly a miraculous cure-all, it is quite effective for general discomforts.
"Oh."
Lan Li took a couple of sips to soothe her throat, held the pill, and before she could take it, felt better already!
Somewhat perplexed and embarrassed, she said, "Um, I don't feel uncomfortable anymore."
Fang Ye chuckled to himself, "Then you don't need the medicine after all."
What do you think?
